Theo Parrish grew up on Chicago house parties. He went to art school in Kansas City, and then moved to Detroit. His eclectic DJ sets in Detroit in the late ’90s and early in this millennium are legendary. 

“Love of the music should be the driving force of any producer, performer or DJ. Everything else stems from that core, that love. With that love, sampling can become a tribute; An expansion on ideas long forgotten, reconstruction, collage. Using the same understanding openly and respectfully can turn DJing into a spiritual participation. It can turn a few hours of selection into essential history; Necessary listening through movement.” This personal philosophy gives shape and direction to the distinctive sounds that are created by Theo Parrish. Julius Steinhoff and Just von Ahlefeld are Smallpeople - a dj and producing duo from Hamburg, Germany that do more than just DJ and produce. They also run the record store Smallville in their hometown and take care of a record company of the same name, releasing house music full of references to the genres rich history. For Carhartt Radio they have put together a show featuring tracks by artists such as Move D, Lowtec, STL, Lawrence, Moomin, and Steve Tang. A thrilling mix that represents the labels trademark ageless house that admires subtle, evolving melodies.

One of Detroit's best kept secrets, Rick Wade has been producing late night tracks and tapping into the essence of deepness since the '90's. Known for their universal appeal and appearing on over 20 different labels worldwide, soulful, timeless grooves
are his signature. Growing up in Buchanan MI, 1 hour outside of Chicago he was influenced by Chicago radio station WBMX and the Salsoul material and local stations that played the likes of Al Green and Isaac Hayes. Rick remembers:

"I've always been into the music first. I loved the way they (WBMX) would blend twosongs together and make it sound like one. I didn't even know what a DJ was back then. I just wanted to blend songs together...When I went to the record store those songs were only available on 12" vinyl, then I needed turntables to play them and then I needed a mixer if I wanted to blend them... At parties I had the records and I had the turntables so I became the DJ almost by default."

Two years ago, Omar-S appeared on Roof.fm. The mix, which is available here, still sounds fantastic. While we were doing a phone interview back then, Alex O. Smith was actually driving to work with his race-car-like-sounding vehicle and nearly got into a car accident because he was seemingly puzzled for a sec by one of our questions… Detroit! Let’s keep it there: This hi-tech soul mix is from Alex’ cousin Big Strick who has released two fine EPs on FXHE. When we called Leonard Strickland earlier today, it turned out to be his 40th birthday. What a happy coincidence. Congrats! We’re looking forward to your album, Leonard.
