Betty Wright - Slip And Do It (Disco Tech Edit)

A little back story on this one, for those of you that may be interested. I'd wanted to do an edit of this wonderful track for ages but couldn't figure out how to approach it when along came Mark E with "Scared", an edit which solved the issue of how to deal with the two separate parts of the track beautifully - extend the intro, tease it out and simply drop into the main part of the original, leaving it as is. Brilliant! The only snag for me was that "Scared" wasn't in the style that I was looking for personally. So, I proceeded to copy Mark E's blueprint using a different groove. I filtered the intro and beat, jammed along on keys over the top, working it to the max, before dropping back into the original at the drop. I've had a lot of fun playing this one out over the years, it works equally well in house clubs and soul all-nighters alike. I've left the edit as is,  the way I first recorded it, nice and loose (nothing to do with locating 9+ year old files  on hard drives ;)). I hope you all enjoy it and play it out often and loud!

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Stephanie Mills -a former Broadway star- is a respectful soul singer that had been married in the 1970s for a brief period, to Jeffrey Daniel from the soul group Shalamar and is rumored to be romantically involved with Michael Jackson in 1975 when she portrayed Dorothy in the original African American adaptation of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz entitled The Wiz alongside Dee Dee Bridgewater and Tasha Thomas.
 
“You Can Get Over” is THE definite disco dynamite raised from her third LP “What Cha' Gonna Do With My Lovin”, her first gold record.  Produced and written by the prolific James Mtume & Reggie Lucas, this highly energetic symphonic-disco masterpiece adopted some pretty futuristic electronic sounds that chilled the spines of every disco dancer in 1979 makin’ it a hit on the U.S. Disco charts where it climbed to #8. Mills’ performance is outstanding as she manages to dominate, screaming her heart out, on such a strong/ecstatic track. Also noted is that Gwen Guthrie was among the backing vocalists.

On this edit I reform the vocal order on the chorus and the verses, highlight the spacy bits, extend the killer rhythm guitar and add some new stuff on what I consider is one of disco’s best ever productions.

My retake on The Jones girls middle eastern inspired classic. Updated drums, arrangement and FX, changed some instruments and percussion. Oh, and its a low rez preview so no cheeky ripping ;-)
