Money Makes the World Go Round

I was digging around on the deep-dark web, and I came across an old man in a hooded robe who beckoned me closer. I couldn't see his face, but he spoke to me in a gravelly voice: "You look like a connoisseur of real hip-hop." Yes, I said! Yes, I am a connoisseur of real hip-hop! "Not that pussy emo shit?" he asked. Never! I assured him. "Very well."

He led me into his shop, and presented me with an unlabeled USB drive. "In the year 2010, Jay-Z collaborated with Kanye West on the song 'Monster'. Are you familiar with his verse?" I nodded silently, enraptured, barely daring even to breathe. The old man continued, "Jay's guest verse is widely considered one of the greatest of all time, perhaps second only to his verse on Suit & Tie. Well, what if I told you that you had only heard what Kanye wanted you to hear?"

I didn't know what to say. Could it be that there was an extended version of my second favorite rap verse in music history? As if he read my mind, the old man chuckled. "That's right. Kanye listened to the original and did not believe the world was ready. My question now is: are you?"

The word was out of my mouth before I even had time to think about it. "Yes!" I pleaded. "Yes, I am! I'll give you anything. I'll pay any price. What do you want?" I pulled out my Bitcoin wallet and my Ethereum wallet and my Dogecoin wallet and my LeNewMemeNiceMayMayManCoin wallet, but the old man only chuckled to himself again.

"No price," he said. "I only wish for the verse to be heard. Sealing it away was a mistake, I know that now." I looked at him, confused, but in the dim light of the old shop I couldn't see his expression any more than I could on the street outside. He leaned in toward me then and pressed the USB drive into my hand, and in that moment I saw his face, tear-streaked, but smiling broadly. "Enjoy it yourself, or share it with others. The only payment I require is the joy of knowing that I have passed the verse on at last."

I bowed my head to the old man and began to leave the shop, desperate to disconnect from my Tor browser and listen to the file I had been given. As I reached for rusty old door handle, I paused, and turned back to say goodbye to the old shopkeeper. "Thank you, Mr. West."
