Glad I saved this from the Neurofunk website around the turn of the millennium as, aside from that lost dubplate, this appears to be the only copy in existence! One of my very favourite tunes, has that brooding distopian atmosphere that Optical is master of.

Alongside Ed Rush, Matt Quinn (who you’ll undoubtedly know better under his DJ name, Optical) has helped sculpt the drum & bass scene’s multifarious experimentations for nearly two decades now. As producers they pioneered the techstep sound, making crisp and explosive d&b sing on the defining <em>Wormhole</em> album, but as bosses of Virus Recordings they’ve managed to continually stay propulsive releasing music from people like Audio, Optiv & BTK, The Upbeats, Noisia and many many more. A mainstay here, the duo’s forceful and dominating sets are always surefire highlights which is why, ahead of their set headlining Room Two this Friday, we asked Optical to put together an hour long mix which demonstrates a) why we hold them in such high regard and b) why Optical’s still one of the most quietly inventive production forces in modern drum & bass.

Sorry for the quality...its the only recording I have right now but I remember making it vividly....it had no arrangement...just loops on a desk with live drops...I know you can tell...but it's a reminder that making parts that talk to each other really well means arranging a song is much easier in the long run.

"Its actually me and Trace in 1998...it was made from drums taken from a cassette tape and some old orchestral sample pack that came with the E6400 sampler....never sounded great quality-wise but was a nice experiment I think, and I loved those drum loops so much even though there is no good version of them out there...it only exists now on some crusty 10" dubplate from Music House, so lost to the sands of time I guess. Never had a real name BTW. Wish I had a DAT of it but alas no."

The clip is DJ Trace's last tune of a set he and Ed Rush played whilst in New Zealand and it would now seem apparent, that apart from the lost DAT/dubplate Optical eludes to, that this may be the only copy in existence.

Sebastian Weingartshofer’s path into music would’ve been almost inconceivable 10 years ago. In 2010 he created his own YouTube channel under the name Skankandbass as a way of sharing his favourite drum & bass tunes, and within a few uploads he’d started to grow his own online following making full use of the constantly developing digital sphere and the opportunities it provides.

Weingartshofer carried on seeking out the best forthcoming D&B, and once his channel properly took off he used his online profile to start throwing his own parties. Nowadays, the rising talent runs his own artist roster looking after artists like Dimension and 1991, and he’s also started playing regularly with us at FABRICLIVE.

Most recently he joined us in Farringdon back in March, where he set the mood in Room One ahead of 1991 with a peppering of up-front rollers with more classic 170BPM cuts. With his next appearance with us coming up in just over a week alongside the likes of Netsky and Friction, we agreed with Weingartshofer to unlock the first 90 minutes of his set to give an idea of what we should expect when he returns.
