SP - The World's Shortest Mixtape

In celebration of Hip Hop's 50th year, we've teamed up with London based ‘Classic Material’ to present a chronologically themed series of mixtapes celebrating the history of recorded Rap music, mixed by Chris Read. Alongside the Hip Hop series this companion Breaks series takes our re-cap of Rap History a level deeper, this time reconstructing the classics of the Hip Hop canon from their constituent sample material. Arranged chronologically of course, this fourth volume pieces together popular Hip Hop tunes from the year of 1989, utilising only the Funk, Soul and Disco tracks from which they were originally constructed. Artwork pays homage to Paul Winley's iconic 'Super Disco Brakes' compilation series.

00年代初頭に、ヒップホップ、ジャズ、ビートダウンをコネクトさせた伝説のユニットRednose Distriktの創設メンバーであり、Kindred Spirits、Dopeness Galore、Teppen等から数々の名作を送り出してきたオランダ/アムステルダムの才能＝Kid Sublimeのニューアルバム『The Padded Room』が、Jazzy Sportより限定アナログ2LPでリリース。

同郷アムステルダムのソウル・ヴォーカリストDamani Leidsman、Kindred Spirits Ensembleにも参画していたフルート奏者Han Litz、オランダのクラブ・ジャズ・シーンの先駆New Cool Collectiveのパーカッション・プレイヤーJos De Haas、そしてアトランタのソウル・コレクティヴThe Dangerfeel Newbies等をゲストに迎えた本作は、ソウル、ジャズ/フュージョン、ラテン等多彩な音楽要素が散りばめられたブラック・ダンスミュージック・アルバムになっている。

ブラック・ファンキーなヴォイス・フレーズを効かせたドライブ感のあるブラック・フュージョン・ハウス「It's Real」。前述のDamani Leidsmanをヴォーカルに迎えエレピ・リフもグルーヴィーなジャジー・ムードの淡いソウルの味わいのあるハウス「It's All In Your Hands Ft. Damani」。

エレピ、オルガン、そしてHan Litzによるフルート・プレイをFeatし、ラテン的哀愁を感じさせるジャジー・インストゥルメンタル・派ううを展開していく「The Mandrill Feat, Han Litz」、レアグルーヴ心をくすぐるキーボードのフレーズも光る80'sブギー・フィーリング溢れる「The Garden」。

アトランタのThe Dangerfeel Newbiesを迎え、男女ヴォーカルの掛け合いとハーモニーが温かなソウル・ヴァイブを増幅させていくBlaze辺りにも通じるナンバー「Heroes Ft. The Dangerfeel Newbies」。

Wax On Vol.1

Bassline was the main hiphop r&b event in 90ties in The Netherlands. I made this mixtape in 1998. Making a statement against commercial r&b from that time. This mix was made to promote beach parties at Bloemendaal and was a labor of love. The shout outs, the freestyles, clearing the tracks. Like so many times in my life I was too ahead of my time. It didn't sell but after 20 years still looks and sounds fresh to me. Enjoy. Thanks HANSJAN for keeping an archive.
