Joe Morris once again presents four tracks that encompass a range of moods and styles while displaying the delicate touch in the studio that he has long become accustomed to. The music of Maltese producer Rudi Agius aka Jupiter Jax has always felt as much defined by mood as movement, guided by the “specific melancholy” of specific melodies. His latest long-player skews even more cinematic, conjuring twilit gardens and crooked city streets, windswept and warped by memory: No Such Thing. Inspired by notions of escape and the unknown, and threaded with dexterous live instrumentation, the album treads vibrant hybrids of moonrise electronica, downtempo dream house, and Balearic breakbeat, brooding but breezy, a Mediterranean midnight of the mind.

Agius speaks of his songs in terms of intuition and inevitability, how and where they transport the listener. These twelve tracks slip between senses and spheres, interplanetary but placeless, noir glimpses of ghostly coastlines and reflective reveries. Flutes, trumpets, voices, and percussion contour his club designs with a tactile fluidity, jazz accents reflecting off rain-slicked marble harbors, the wakening dawn still worlds away.

Premiere: Jupiter Jax - Moods No Grooves

Over the last few years, Naples has steadily become a radiant epicentre for sun-dazed funk from outer space, pushing forth a noria of like-minded keyboard vibists and transcending the limitative 4x4 radius to establish a sound both sprightly dancy and immersively organic. A gifted exponent of that retro-laced cosmic funk sound that’s become trademark to the city’s musical identity, Walter Del Vecchio alias Quiroga resurfaces on Really Swing with the aptly named ‘Chords and Desire’, two years after his latest sortie, ‘Cups and Balls’.

Beaming us up to an Eden of woozy synths, FX-laden Rhodes and translucent melodies, Quiroga bathes his listener in an infinite pool of laid-back nu-disco tropes, reshaped P-funk motifs and further Balearic-compatible stabs. It all starts with the lascivious ‘Dabbler in Love’, a slo-blooming piece of late summer audio hedonism, primed for extended sun-basking sessions with your lover by the sparkling seaside. Blazing with romantic fire and overly sensual by essence, the tune dips further into free-jazz jamming and melodic abstraction, drawing closer to a spaced-out ‘70s Herbie Hancock joint as bars fly by.

A more organic affair, ‘Kundabuffer’ whelms us in a downtempo trompe-l’oeil - lushly painted with birdsong samples, tape-echo’d textures and swarms of wobbly synth stabs that’ll get your knee-caps soft as jelly.

Picking up the torch on a further hypnagogic jazz kind of vibe, ‘Villa Lysis’ will have you drifting in the zone in a caress as it merges lucid dream-sourced panpipes, chimey chords and sedated slap bass.

An equally lavish though more dynamic cut, ’Snaporaz’ engineers a mix of acidulous funk, spacious, sci-fi-indebted ambientism and late-summer nostalgic layers.

EP closer ‘Drum ’N Bass For Papa’ finds Quiroga mischievously flaunting his junglistic assets along with his signature free-wheeling keyboard bravura, upping the tempo for a last ride that eschews a lulling-you-to-sleep finale but extrapolates the Italian producer’s knack for carving out jazz-funk beats as unorthodox in structure as they’re instantly captivating groove-wise.

The element of surprise sparks the imagination as Afterlife defy everyday expectation by virtue of Resistance. Or to put into Steve Miller’s own words: Resistance to any person or thing that in any way degrades the natural experience of human life on this planet is a necessary balancing force at this point in our evolution.

This moment’s decay is bound up with a longing for a better tomorrow. The impulse of that feeling beats throughout the heart of each track with the music proposing a revolution in culture: freedom to think for yourself. That defining, searing intensity is then hardwired directly into the soul of the title track Resistance, its reference to the fractured dream of Detroit alongside the percussive punctuation of Afterlife’s Balearic notation infuse the music with the spirit of meaning, speaking in wordless motion. Dancing to the tune of fierce percussion amid swirls of atmospheric intensity, plus the grainy resolution of bass, Steve’s brilliant series of EP’s are now elevated into another realm of possibility by defiantly exercising a resistant return to the dancefloor.

Antifearance seeks to reverse the climate of fear charged by a barrage of roaring synthesizers primed and set to stun. It’s excitable escapade in demanding rhythms roll out across the floor reaching a tantalising, uncompromising conclusion igniting a playfully subversive Afterlife in the process (while remembering the provocative echo of Patrick Cowley).

A most welcome addition on this release are the two remixes of Resistance featuring Deep House evangelists, Hardway Bros. Inspired by the originals escape into subterranean adventure the motor city is again alluded to by the brush of timeless basslines and drum machines - their use of the words Transmat Dub speaks volumes. The results are needless to say inspired and inspiring…

“The Bside of…” mixtapes so far have proven to be up there with our best and this one is certainly no different. 

We are transporting you to Germany to place you in the very capable hands of co-founder Kapote, he stands out as a brilliant producer and selector in his own right so it’s a privilege to have him guide us through a playlist of his very own favourites from The Bside of… Toy Tonics!!!

Since 2015 Toy Tonics have been breathing a breath of fresh air into soul and disco, with their tasteful edits and carefully curated new productions making them possibly the hottest record label to recently emerge from Germany. Their style is an infectious fun that can explode into euphoric joy on any dance floor across the world.
Beyond their releases they have proven themselves as one of Europe’s best parties, with the Toy Tonics Jam series inviting many of the label's favourite artists to do their thing at the best clubs across the continent.

Toy Tonics now has over 100 releases, EPs, Albums, Compilation Series, Edits and Original Productions. They are as prolific as they are consistently excellent, and they always aim to push the boundaries of “new house and futuristic electronic dance music”.

The Toy Tonics roster includes founders Munk and Kapote, COEO, Whitesquare, Blackloops, PBR Streetgang, Demuja, Felipe Gordon, FYI Chris, Dimitri from Paris, Phenomenal Handclap Band, not to mention some previous guests Rhode & Brown, and Jad & The. Not bad huh!

The Toy Tonics team also let us in on some in info and snippets of their first release of 2021... Boy are we excited for it! We can tell you that it is Cody Curry's first solo EP on Toy Tonics, and is titled 'Moves EP', featuring Eliza Rose on the vocals on the main track. Each track sounds beautiful, filled with 'atmospheric garage-y broken beat territory as an ode to his London roots. Rich chords, catchy hooks and hard hitting rhythms.' They also told us that Joel Holmes and Athlete Whippet are in line for the next Toy Tonics releases in the coming months...
