Esa joins the Dekmantel ranks with his Aweh EP, which employs traditional Gogo vocals and modern kwaito beats while paying homage to Cape Town’s 1990s importer of early house music. ‘Rent-A-Disc’ on the B-side takes its name from the aforementioned music outlet, which was a key source of music discovery for Esa's father.

There is a lot of mystery surrounding the Amsterdam-based label Kalahari Oyster Cult. Run by Belgian DJ Colin Volvert, one would be hard pressed to find much of anything written about them on the internet. The only biographical information we were able to find was the quote, “An oyster of the old school who nobody can open.” This quote is taken from Milfred Newcomb’s 1989 analysis of one of Charles Dickens’ characters Mr. Tulkinghorn. Although we do not believe Dickens’ character is meant to represent the ethos of the label, oysters and the use of mysterious quotes certainly do. In fact, in each 5 of 6 releases Kalahar Oyster Cult has come out with in their inaugural year, a quote referencing oysters can be found in the notes section each of their discogs pages.

This theme will most likely continue in the label’s upcoming release of Rhythm Of Paradise’s 12’’ “Age of White.” From southern Italy, Rhythm Of Paradise’s Michele Lamacchia operates his own label Cosmic Rhythm and has been known to produce under aliases like Love Island, Mike Lee, Qubrique, and Soulvibe Inc. In his latest release, Michele has put together a proper selection of retro-fitted, extraterrestrial chunes that consist of 3 versions of the title track and a remix by his label mate Cosmic Garden.

While listening to the original, one can’t help but be reminded by other producers such as Lone who have made a living off this sort of sound. By utilizing an assortment oldschool drum machines, lush Detroit synths, and majestic chimes, Rhythm Of Paradise crafts a mood that is both nostalgic but refreshingly unfamiliar; as if one were floating through intergalactic space, gazing upon unknown lands while being accompanied by a recognizable soundtrack. You know, sorta like Guardians of the Galaxy but instead of music from the 60s and 70s, Quill's walkman is playing 90s house.

This release follows the outstanding debut ‘we_ctrl001’ which gained support from the likes of Kerri Chandler, DJ Deep, Brothers Vibe and Jimpster. Closing the release we have ‘Sequincing’, low-slung and spacey, the vibe is loop centric with minute subtleties in automation painting the bigger picture for its duration where refined reverb tails and filter modulations create a beautifully flowing dynamism.

Fifty releases in the bag, WOLF Music come correct with a second drop in their 10th year release schedule from French wizard LB aka LABAT, as hotly anticipated as anything Palace could even begin to dream up.
 
‘Scanner’ opens the EP with LB bringing that trademark MPC crunched, sample-heavy style he’s become known for. Dusty jazz loops, distorted percussive hits and vocal cut ups, sounding like they’re straight outta forgotten VHS movies, are laid over the top of a monstrous bassline and emotive strings for a contorted house bomb.
 
Next up ‘Track One’ hits with some Theo Parrish inspired, full frontal synthwork as tight drums and an effect-laden melody are interjected with soulful vocal snippets and a fervent kick. A surefire dancefloor destroyer with a big bass breakdown for good measure.
 
Flip it over for a heads down, late-night ‘Dirty Walk’ with fizzing percussion blending behind sublime Rhodes, overdriven kick drums and that acid infused bass, ready set to be a club staple this year. ‘Shut The World Down For A Moment’ rounds things off, capturing the syncopated mind of LB with a half-time drum loop in the background, slightly off kilter, that he somehow just makes work into a hazy jam.
 
Half century complete and kicking off the next with a bang from the man they call LB aka LABAT.
