Simon Shaw was born in the south east of England.

By the age of 18, the sound the of 90’s House and UK Garage were of all the rage, ultimately finding musical influences from the likes of The Prodigy, Daft Punk, Deadmau5, Masters At Work, Mark Knight, Carl Cox, Pete Tong, Marco Carola amongst many other pioneers, as well as labels like Defected, Strictly Rhythm, Toolroom, Visionquest, and many more.

With this love for electronic music, Simon Shaw decided to learn the craft of DJing, developing his skills and getting his break to play a local club night which he had been a avid supporter of. Working his way up from just a small DJ to now running his own success club night in his home town of Southend On Sea (UK) playing in some of the most admired and legendary clubs in the UK as well as having international bookings across Europe.

At the start of 2014 Simon landed a job working within the A&R department for the legendary record label Defected, were here he continues to learn his craft and the industry around him. In that time he also had his first release on Smiley Fingers, and after building relationships with friends ‘The Deepshakerz’ he had a release to kick start 2015 on their imprint Safe Music.

Now, with releases out on labels such as Go Deeva Records and on Lauter Unfug with remixes from underground artist such as Matchey & Bott & Timid Boy, and collabs from artist such as Dantiez Saunderson, Jhonsson and more, things are really shaping up nicely for Simon Shaw’s career as he definitely is one to keep your eye on.

Having sprinkled her magic on ‘Herbert’s Finest 06’ earlier this year, one of techno’s most distinctive vibe evangelists returns to the Monaberry family fold for her first full label release: Bebetta.

Monabetta: it’s the perfect match... Like Monaberry’s output, Bebetta’s joyous unpredictability ensures a blindfold ride into sensory abandon with not so much as a whiff of preconceptions, formula or rigidity.

‘Uppercut’ is less of a punch and more a slo-mo disco karate chop where stars and rainbows appear on impact. The uncompromised kicks and thwacking eight-bar snare snap your senses while the pensive one note riff, bulbous bass and cosmic synth weaves gradually climax into a Detroitian piano-smashing riff so evocative you could just lose your shoes.

‘Shimmy’ brings to mind oceanic ripples, which swell progressively and a timeless arpeggio, which ebbs, flows and occasionally bursts into full bodied bass before breaking out into an illustrious build where ghostly vocals mirror the sea’s glimmers in an agelessly classic way.

Remix-wise Monabetta is packing equally serious heat: Viktor Talking Machine play the quintessential Street Fighters with an ‘Uppercut’ version that pummels with a juicy 808 and a short sharp break into the heavenly piano hook. German Brigante flips the switch on ‘Shimmy’, too, twisting our focus on the creepy crawly bass and pure epicity of the chords. Finally Lowertones bossman Leix adds a softer focus to ‘Uppercut’s emotional narrative and more of a jacking swing to the drums for a shorter, subtler journey.

Two sublime originals, three fittingly stunning remixes: Betta get on this one quickly...

For Opulent Temple's 2019 annual Wednesday night Sacred Dance party, we were hosted by our friends at Playground since we didn't have a sound camp this year.  I played 10-11 before Carl Cox.  So the goal was walking the fine line of being engaging & building energy but still being a proper "opening set" for Carl, and not hot dogging it.

2 songs (Sunshine & Peanut Butter), were by my friend and vocalist Ida Flo, who sang live up on stage next to me.  The night was pure magic, the energy gorgeous, the vibe palpable.  Hope this takes you back, let me know what you think!
