Johannes Brahms ( 7 May 1833 – 3 April 1897) was a German composer and pianist. Born in Hamburg into a Lutheran family, Brahms spent much of his professional life in Vienna, Austria. In his lifetime, Brahms's popularity and influence were considerable. He is sometimes grouped with Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven as one of the "Three Bs", a comment originally made by the nineteenth-century conductor Hans von Bülow.

The Chopin Fantaisie-Impromptu is one of those iconic pieces of the classical piano repertoire. It is arguably played too much so why have I added my performance? I think the infinite ways a piece can change in the hands of different musicians is actually very interesting. My version is fast but lyrical and I search for an unexaggerated and natural romanticism and warmth.

This was part of a 4 CD set called GOONY or Great Organs of New York. Largely recorded in 1995 for the 1996 AGO. I remember this night it was Saturday. Dr. Hancock asked me if I wanted to pick a chant for him to improvise on. (I was largely ignorant of all the tremendous music suppressed by the Catholic Church in the 1960s - and almost didn't know what to pick). So I told Dr. Hancock to pick something. There were men working up in the triforium and they said they be done in 5 minutes - it went on for more then 5 minutes. My then business associate went to the building manager, shortly after that the building manager came out and yelled up to them to stop immediately and not to make a sound. Dr. Hancock then sat down and did this in one take. I love this improvisation so much. Gerre Hancock is a genius.
