Phonons (@phonons-net) is an organization dedicated to dub, deep and hypnotic sounds. Runned by Phil Gray-Lopez and Nems-B since 2011, Phonons has been cultivating since 2011 a refined cosmic aesthetics through a small series of events in south of France and a subtly curated podcast series. 

Like us, Phil Gray-Lopez (@subrealist64) is a marine world aficionado : whale tail sculpturer and surfboard designer in the daily life, Phil is an artist at the broad sense of the term. Inspired by the roots of techno music and polyrhythmics structures, he is used to add live elements into his hybrid Dj sets. In charge of the first half of this mix (until 43’), Phil included some scientific recordings of fish communication sounds into his set. 

Second part of the podcast is the work of Nems-B (@nemsb). Acknowledged by his peers of the deep techno scene for his outstanding mixing techniques, Nahim has played in major places such as Tresor and the mighty Paral.lel Festival in Spain. As a producer, he released on Oslated, Geometrika FM and On Board Music.

For their contribution to our series, the two Phonons active members choose to explore the imaginary of the massive coral reef discovered in November 2021 off Tahiti. Nearly stretching two miles long and 200 feet wide, this is one of the most extensive healthy coral reefs on record. Found in pristine condition in the ocean's twilight zone feet below the surface - whereas coral normally needs sunlight and shallow warmth to thrive - these rose corals represent a highly unusual treasure of life. "We know the surface of the moon better than the deep ocean. Only 20% of the entire seabed has been mapped” admitted UNESCO after this discovery. Let’s discover about the soundtrack of this mysterious submarine environment could sound like.

Music lover, Dj and Electronic Music Producer from Barcelona, ​​Spain.
I am enjoying electronic music since 1993, where I started listening to Techno and Hard-Trance, influenced by the legendary TB-303 Bass Synthesizer. In 2001 he started as a DJ, mixing Techno, House, "Trance" and in 2006 Minimal. In 2011 he began his first steps in the production of Electronic Music, working with computers and machines for it.

The set was inspired by my last time playing at Bossa Nova Civic club in Brooklyn for Cipher before it burned down. The vibe and dance floor were on point that evening. Many of the tracks in the mix I played there that night.

This week DJ BIRCH makes her debut on the channel with a set that can be decribed as a walk into the forest with all different layers of colors, sounds and surroundings. Just as she used the type of genres of music to paint this walk. So Enjoy!

BIO:
DJ BIRCH is a Halle (Germany) based DJ, curator, and cultural 
organizer. She conducts DJ workshops and offers platforms aimed at 
empowering FLINTA* people (female, lesbian, intersexual, non-binary, transgender and agender, the asterisk * stands for everyone who cannot identify with any of the letters and who is marginalized in patriarchal majority societies) of all backgrounds. Being involved 
in the @djversity! and @featfem crews, she works to create more 
diversity in music scenes and club cultures, showcasing a range of 
FLINTA* artists. She and her crews want to emphasize that there are 
many FLINTA* talents who can be booked for club events or festivals. 
DJ BIRCH co-hosts the podcast series of Feat. Fem and she curates 
the SLOTS events at Pierre Grasse in Halle. Her genre-crossing sounds blend trippy rhythms, fluctuating between melodic and more abrasive timbres and shaping sounds that feel light and heavy at the same time. This creates a journey with dualistic atmospheres, eventempered textures, spiraling synth patterns, bouncy bassline heaters and eerie ambiances. All these sonic ventures are rooted in DJ BIRCH’s much larger yearning for societal change: In her formative years, DJs seemed ‘untouchable’ and FLINTA* DJs were 
underrepresented. For a long time, this produced the feeling that 
the music world is one where she can only play the role as an 
observer and DJed mainly at home (unless friends vehemently askedher to play at their events). Through different music collectives, BIRCH was able to break down these invisible walls and make sense of the structural problems in electronic music culture, music production and DJing. With fresh courage she stepped out of the background. Today she loves to perform her music at different venues and on many platforms. Aside from her DJ passion, it is a matterclose to her heart to pass this unearthed fearlessness onto others.

THE SET: 
This set was recorded in Winter 2021/2022, a time in which DJ BIRCH 
was struggling with pandemic restrictions, personal crises, and the 
bittersweet melancholy of a grey winter in Germany. With the name 
Deep in the Birch Forest, it reflects a slight touch of the gloom 
of a foggy forest combined with a hopeful, gentle flow, deepness, 
and rhythmic layers which are connected to the woods: A magical 
place where DJ BIRCH restores her energy, finds inspiration, and 
loves to perform music. Let the ambient and slow techno vibrations 
guide you deep into the forest.

''Cenk's attention to music started by hearing his brother playing The Art Of Noise - Moments In Love, in the year 1985. When breakdancing got popular in town they both started collecting electro-funk records accordingly. This goes until 1988 where he heard a new dance craze called New Beat and Acid house, came out from Belgium and the UK. These two turning points fixated his path in dance music. In 1992, luckily he found out tape recordings of the very first Techno Trax compilation series of ZYX Music and aware of this new euphoric dance beats called Techno. His favourite label back then Force Inc Music led him to be aware and enjoy each and every dance music styles. Having a large collection of music in all forms, he has invited to local radio programs to share those unique sounds with other curious minds until the internet era came to our lives. Since 2000, shares his selections from his archive via his web account. Even though never interested in becoming a DJ, he time to time invited to play local venues''

Sergey Piskunov aka Fraag - Dj and one of the organizers of the only_techno rave in the city of Cherepovets. He started his DJ career in 1999 and from that moment he searched for himself and his ideology through the prism of club dance music, and found it in techno and underground culture - realizing that ascetic raves in abandoned factories are his element, and ravers are kindred spirits. Sergey collects and plays his sets exclusively on vinyl, give preference to experimental sound rather than commercial one - mixing different techno subgenres - from buzzing drones to aggressive tracks with a powerful kick, achieve that very rave atmosphere - which unites people on the dance floor.
