Deeper Sounds (guest mixes)

Deep Ghosh recently moved to Amsterdam to start a new professional chapter his space engineering life (working at the European Space Agency and looking after environmental monitoring missions), but over the last couple of years has been working on his newly coined role as a 'rave engineer' (or as he jokingly refers to it as the '5 to 9'). Deep is one of the curators of the Flow Sessions long-format 3:33hr mix series, co-creator and organizer UTOPIA Festival, veteran burner (Burning Man, AfrikaBurn, KiezBurn) and active in the Berlin and Amsterdam Burner communities. In between all this, he also enjoys DJing occasionally (on land and sea)

"I am happy to say I was able to finally take a moment and breathe, and make a little 2-hour story of some of the music that I got to discover and share over the last 6 months: starting with dismal winter lockdown and curfew in Amsterdam, to surviving in sweaty office kitchens, secret speakeasies and finally freedom under the blue skies, skirting the turquoise waters of the Red Sea teeming with life, and the Martianesque mountains of the Sinai Peninsula. The last 3 months I got to spend returning to Egypt multiple times was the truly reinvigorating and creatively recharging gift of 2021, as I returned to take on a dystopian castle adventure with my friends at UTOPIA, and help bring our culture back to doing what it does best: spreading joy and love through music, dance, and community. So much more awaits!

For me, music has always served as an audible journal entry, an irreplaceable bookmark on a moment and experience, and an instant memory trigger. This particular journey is a deeply personal one, and emotes where I have been lately (introspectively and otherwise): personally, mentally, emotionally, and a musical nod to some of the incredibly talented humans I recently connected with on my travels to Egypt. In the past year, a boat and the Red Sea became my third living room under the open skies, on turquoise waters, among sandy islands, with dolphin loving dogs and an incomparable captain and adventurer of the deep (in the truest sense). It is the living room where I had the chance to, at least on a couple of occasions literally, flow musically through the winds and waves in the last year. It was a beautiful send off to 2021 in Egypt, where I truly found myself at home in the past year, and following the New Year's excesses, a brief omicronous intermission allowed me to take a minute, to breathe and allow myself to slow down, and spend some quality time with chosen family and think and scheme ahead to a year of adventure, and bringing my homes of Amsterdam and Berlin closer ✨ 🇪🇬🌌🌄🚢🌅🎶💫

This mix feels like starting an exciting new chapter in my musical journey. Today, 4 years after my first mix was released in Amsterdam, I'm proud to put up this recording, to serve as a bright memory of starting an exciting new chapter with the beautiful people over at Levantine House ( instagram.com/levantinehouse )in Amsterdam's newest beach club on the IJ @ KAAP (Thanks for having us 🎪❣️). It was such an incredible true family gathering, with a tribe of humans who I have grown to love and respect over the last 4 years since we connected through the music community here. After two long years of uncertainty, limbo and isolation, it truly was an emphatic experience playing music in a packed club again. The vibe was palpable, as we all needed to collectively shake it out🙌🏾 

That night was a true musical communion. My heart is absolutely full. Seeing you all out there, and the energy bubbling forth out there, the beautiful smiles and raptures of dance and celebration together at the end of the long dark (and for many, isolated) winter days was completely energizing, and also brought out my best that night.

Welcome back to the Magician On Duty Journey Series!

On this edition we welcome Deep Ghosh (@deep_schismic)

Deep (and yes, it really is his name) started his DJing journey in a sweaty club in Berlin back in 2017, where he witnessed his growing obsession for electronic music tip over from hobby to worthwhile passion. Since then, he has travelled to some of the dustiest and lushest corners of the globe from his hometown Melbourne to the beaches of Bali, from Black Rock City to the Tankwa Karoo of South Africa, from the mountains of Sinai to the Red Sea and beyond living out this passion. 

His musical selections are one of unabashed love of emotional, vocal melodies juxtaposition to the deeper end of the sonic spectrum, while showing the influences of his musical upbringing in rock music and pop culture as well as occasionally giving us peeks into the music of his ancestors.

While the world slowed down during the COVID-19 pandemic, Deep managed to stay engaged in his passion for music. Since 2020, he is one of the curators of the Flow Sessions long-format mix series. He is also co-organiser, curator and "rave engineer" of boutique gatherings such as UTOPIA Festival, as well as being involved in organizing Burner and underground gatherings in Berlin and Amsterdam (where he is based since 2020 in pursuit of his rather cosmic day job as a space engineer looking after climate monitoring satellite missions).

This mix really captures how I love to get lost in music, create emotional journeys and showcase some of my musical influences. It was one of those situations of being out in a magical corner of the world--on a boat, out on the turquoise waters of the Red Sea--with some of my nearest and dearest celebrating the birthday of a legendary woman, and opening the musical proceedings for a week of love laughter and riding the waves.

I personally found my way into a magical rabbit hole 3 years ago in Pankow during the pandemic, breaking through my mindset and misconceptions about such an event: I had never felt so free in such cute surroundings, and it had the last thing to do with sexuality. Wow! Fast forward to 2024 and Danielle's invitation - and then it turned out we were there to celebrate the 5th anniversary, within another beautiful rabbit hole: Sisyphos! I have never quite partied in a party within a party quite like this before, and to share it with a lovely pack of humans was the cherry on the cupcake! As that 'magical time of the year' comes around yet again and so many of my friends and wonderful connections around the world converge for That Thing in the Desert, I actually look forward to slowing down a little after a rather ambitious 8 months personal sabbatical mainly involving galavanting around the globe and finding my tribe. Looking back to 1 year ago and my first burn, and everything I have encountered there and since, mostly I am grateful, and so thankful to have surrounded myself with so many bright, beautiful, and downright brilliant humans from all walks of life. 

Our time with the Dragomi who we hosted at Camp DRIFT last year, was at times contentious as things can get in the heat and the dust, but overall it was a memorable time, and one of those special nights and mornings was following our debut of Franchise Freedom with luminous composer & pianist Joep Beving, with support from the mighty Mayan Warrior (incredible thanks to Pablo, Mauricio and the MW family) and Eelke Kleijn @eelke-kleijn. This spontaneous set cruising around after the first show was done and dusted was my way to coming down from the previous 5hrs' adrenaline rush supporting the sound production of our flying sculpture installation and piano performance while managing & curating the music on the Dragomi. The music has always been and will continue to be the drug that makes it possible.

melbourne acid saturday

Saturday sunrise 5 - 7AM, CobraCabana, Tankwa Town, AfrikaBurn 2019. Ubulahnti Peacocks Takeover w/ Veronika Fleyta, Joep Mencke, TantRut, Lev Tatarov, VANDER, Parallells, RAMMÖ

Well where to start with this year's burn? Musically, it was one of challenges and growth and just learning to think on my feet. The theme of collaboration was certainly not lost with my Ubulahnti Peacock brothers and sisters, with whom I had the honour and sheer joy of taking over various camps and sound stages, including Javanesia, Bubbles & Bass, The Dung Beetle, WHY NOT, Dreamers, The Spirit Train and of course the inescapable vixen on the Playa this year: The seductive CobraCabana and its towering cobra head. After a week of sandstorms, crazy warm nights, the starry skies night in night out, the broken DJ controllers and misplaced USBs leading to 3 cancelled gigs, it finally came down to the mystical serpent. I had the honour of guiding her from the twilight into the final sunrise. 

Thank you to Maxime, Lucian and the entire CobraCabana family for giving so much to make this effigy and stage a reality (on their first attempt no less!). I will also treasure my gift of the Snake Juice which was my prize for sharing the music <3

This was the first time playing with one of my musical soul brothers TantRut (@tantrut). Ruud was one of the bright and colourful beating hearts of our Ubulahnti camp, and getting to finally play some tunes out on the Playa in Tankwa together that Thursday afternoon was unforgettable, especially as our devoted and beloved camp members came scurrying over for a beautiful sunset dance together. So much love to you all in reliving those moments out there, and to Amie, Tania and the rest of the Ubulahnti Family for providing such a wonderful home out there.

It was the night that the camels of the Zerzura (@zerzura) oasis wandered over to the wild jungle of the Underworld, and I had the honour to play the sunset before the original Rebel der Träumer Elias Doré took the stage. Of course this was all during an Underworld staged a 'downtempo wegbassen' protest at Zerzura where the airwaves were hijacked with an onslaught of 150bpm+ tracks, so naturally it was our duty to show the Underworlders how we Zerzurians 'Give. Take. Put' at camel pace and find the deeper spaces.

Kiez Burn 2019 | Underworld

Looking forward to returning home in the scorching summer heat is a typical Australian summer, especially when the skies in Europe stay dark and grey for unnervingly long stretches. In 2019 I got to finally find myself joining this beautiful and welcoming family that is Rainbow and truly experience one of the best sounding stages in the world in person and feast my senses. It was made even more special by the fact that it was the first time in almost a decade I felt at home again in Melbourne again since leaving in 2008. 

This summer, I was fortunate enough to connect with a new beautiful musical family who came over to sample the upper echelons of the European doof season. After an unforgettable time across the Monastery to the Forest Wonderland known as Garbicz,  I hope to come full circle to where it all begin, and reunite with my family in the dust at Rainbow Serpent 2020, except if I got to do that from the DJ booth as well..well, that would rather pleasant.

As a tremendous year of adventures music and 'find your tribe' comes to a close, I look back to one of my favourite nights of this year, where I had the chance to once again co-create a beautiful oasis with my beautiful ZERZURA family and expand beyond our Kiez Burn borders to connect with the Berlin and German Burner community. 

Shortly before taking over the decks, Jae & I had a look around the steamy, sweaty sea of people swaying and dancing the night away in the Werkstatt, and Jae asked me what I was in the mood for tonight. I thought about it for a second, and I said, "Well, we have a steamy sauna in front of us, with sweat dripping down the knobs and faders, so let's do these people a favour and help them get naked by the end of the night!' 

It was truly a night of many firsts. It was the first time Jae and I played a gig together (and definitely not for the last time!). However, the most unforgettable first among them, was getting to see a podium full of dancing naked goddesses in raptures to our music. We were truly humbled, and are so happy we can finally relive that incendiary Burn Night again.

Berlin Burn Night 2019 | ZERZURA (b2b w/ princessjæ)

My musical connection with Sriracha started on the dusty plains of the Rainbow Serpent Festival in 2019, where I stumbled upon a crowd of people dancing around a circus train. I thought 'who the hell is this chick playing half my playlist?' We connected soon after and by the time I left Melbourne, I had an incredible new musical soul family. 

Fast forward to Summer 2019, and The Monastery that made us cross paths yet again--this time on my home turf in a way, at the Gardens of Babylon. A fiery, and some dare say deep, musical bond was forged in the Kloster Café that Saturday night after I cheekily asked her if she had her USBs on her shortly after I was asked to play spontaneously at the Not-So-Secret Stage. Next thing she knew, she had her impromptu debut at one of the most beautiful and beloved musical gatherings around. That night and the follow-on adventure at Garbicz and Berlin were probably among the two unforgettable weeks of 2019, and one that left us certain that we were kindred spirits of sorts, somehow each other's spirit animals.

Fast forward again to March 2020, when I snuck off for my yearly visit to Melbourne and was graciously invited to stay at a spaceship, and woken up on a Sunday morning with the news that Sriracha was suddenly left without a b2b partner, so she walked into my room and cheekily asked if I had my USBs on me. Next thing I know, we were back to continue that musical bond and write another incredible little chapter together.

It has been a somewhat surreal start to the new decade, and one clouded in much uncertainty and soul searching, but one thing is certain: Yelena and I have many more chapters and adventures to write together. Europe awaits my spirit animal <3

bali tropicola isolation livestream

3 years ago, I turned 33, and found myself at a crossroads in life. During a period of self-reflection, I found myself fascinated watching a gently swinging pendulum clock in an observatory demonstrate the passage of time and knock over markers demonstrating the rotation of the Earth. Watching it in motion, almost imperceptibly, made me appreciate how the forces of the universe are in perpetual motion, spinning, ebbing and flowing through everything. As an engineer, I should have been content marveling at this simple science experiment. I kept pondering though and got lost in thought beyond science and mechanics: lost in thoughts of human connection, thoughts of where the journey on this spinning blue rock could lead, thoughts of what I wanted to do with my time here, and with it setting some imperceptible intentions while the pendulum kept swinging.

3 years later, I can bear witness to the power of manifestation of true intentions. One of those imperceptible (and at the time probably improbable) intentions was to devote more time and energy into the pursuit of music, and creative, artistic pursuits as a balance to my mechanical and rational mind. I am amazed and humbled and excited by the path I set foot on 3 years ago, and especially grateful that I found myself a global soul tribe with whom I look forward to create, grow, laugh, dance and spread love through genuine connection. One key part of this global soul tribe is this beautiful Flow family. To Corr and Yelena who brought me into this project and empower me greatly in my creative pursuits and help me wield my powers of connection for good:  I'm humbled and grateful for having you, and cannot wait to see where we end up in the next 3 years.

This mix sums up what Flow Sessions is all about to me: letting the music and beats guide the journey, going with the flow, and not least of all showcasing the immensely talented artists whose music has not only inspired and influenced my musical tastes over the last 3 years but also includes the music of my adolescence, the music of my ancestors, and an unabashed love of emotional vocal melodies in juxtaposition to deeper ends of the sonic spectrum. I hope you enjoy the journey, and the imperceptible pondering that may result over the 3hrs 33min.
