The Deep&Disco / Razor-N-Tape Podcast - Episode #5: Freddie Joachim

Athletes of God is the power combination of Parrott, real name Richard Barratt aka @crookedmanofficial, and @ladyblackbird-music on ‘Don’t Wanna Be Normal’.

Sheffield producer Parrott makes his debut on the London label after having had a seminal career that spans decades. From his beginnings as a DJ at Sheffield Club Jive Turkey where he was cited as the inspiration for Warp Records, to being the very first release on Warp under his ‘Sweet Exorcist’ moniker with Cabaret Voltaire’s Richard H Kirk, he is one of the originators of the Sheffield ‘bleep’ sound. His Crooked Man project saw him signed to James Murphy’s DFA Records,  most recently the elusive producer worked his black magic on Roisin Murphy’s incendiary album ‘Rosin Machine’. Lady Blackbird comes hot off the rave reviews of her album ‘Black Acid Soul’ which has sold over 50 thousand copies in its short life. Her European tour was a sell-out, with LBB joining Gregory Porter for the UK leg of his tour.

The result of this herculean effort is the low-fi, max power single ‘Don’t Want To Be Normal’ that drops on Foundation Music in July. It’s a downtempo, electro-soul version of Randy Crawford’s ‘Don’t Wanna Be Normal’, the original largely unknown. Foundation Music’s Ross Allen has been wanting to cover it since he heard Tong play it back in ’86 on Invicta Radio.  Athletes Of God infuse Lady Blackbird’s iconic voice into a deep & soulful, moody electronic journey. Athletes of God and Lady Blackbird take a well-formed song and bring it up to present day with its perfectly timed outsider message for 2022. With the right singer and the right producer, it was finally time to do the track justice.  Played already on 6 Music in its demo form by Roisin Murphy, with listeners raving since Roisin dropped that first sneaky tease.

Co-written and produced by JKriv, the original is a modern take on 80's mid-tempo R&B, think Chaka Khan meets Holy Ghost! Blending a deep bass line with shimmering synth textures, the infectious hook really shines a light on Adeline's formidable vocals. Kraak & Smaak rework the tune into a chilled-out new boogie affair, while DJ Vas and JKriv take things into deeper and darker territory with their mixes. Dino Soccio rounds out the package with sultry and warm west coast flavor.

Adeline Michèle has been leading disco band Escort since the release of their first eponymous album in 2011. With a new Escort record slated for an end of October release, and other lead up singles gaining serious attention in Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and the NY Times magazine, Adeline is set to make some serious waves in 2015 and beyond.

He was personally selected by Duran Duran's bassist and co-founder John Taylor to cover "Planet Earth". His "Hotel California" edit was a runaway smash, instantly attracting nearly 300,000+ Soundcloud listens and a great deal of press including a front page piece with the Wall Street Journal. “Hotel California” was later taken down everywhere due to a major internet kerfuffle, which served only to boost Luxxury's profile and add to his mystique. He received immediate support from Greg Wilson, Psychemagik, Ursula 1000, Junior Sanchez, Goldroom and hundreds more.

Today, LUXXURY shares his new single “Take It Slow” which is available now and will be released as part of the Hold On / Take It Slow single package on March 4 via Deep&Disco. The new songs are heavily steeped in classic West Coast sunshine and vintage disco vibes. Along with keyboardist/collaborator Billy Caruso (Laco$te, Corridor) the new Luxxury sound doubles down on '78 California: all shimmering Rhodes, dusty anti-EDM disco beats and funky bass lines peppered with blue eyed falsetto vocals provided by Robin himself.

LUXXURY - Take It Slow

A chunky nu-disco track with hints of Metro Area and a catchy vocal hook, the seeds of Elisco were planted in the early 2000’s when label founder JKriv and http://soundcloud.com/tigersonaleash were sharing a loft space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.   After an afternoon of cowbells and synths, the skeleton of the track had its shape, and their other roomate’s girlfriend was enlisted to sing the hook.  She had no singing experience to speak of, but somehow it all worked and Elisco was born!  Although it’s always been a personal favorite of the producer duo, the song remained shelved for almost 7 years until they dusted it off in early 2011 and readied it for release on the newly minted Deep&Disco Recordings.

Providing remixes for the vinyl release are the legendary http://soundcloud.com/leftside-wobble, who turns in an extended and bpm’d-up version quite true to the original, taking the machine vibes to the next level with added loops and fx.  Brighton’s Alphabet City (http://soundcloud.com/blacklodge) brings the disco-boogie sensibility to the package with a deep mix that features JKriv on live bass, and Whiskey Disco regular http://soundcloud.com/sleazymcqueen rounds it out with an indie dance stomper.
