Still hot off his Talking Drum EP for Liberta Records Deepchild makes his solo debut for Safe Space with Burned Flags and Ancient Rites. Resisting the notion that the current moment calls for depoliticising the dancefloor, Deepchilds work and continued artistic thesis speaks to transformation through and despite global trauma. Burned Flags and Ancient Rites offers 3, titular rust-tinged, splintered techno cuts, refracting and sharpening the artists early Berlin based work of smeared aesthetics and haunted machinery. Resisting business techno sheen, Ackermann adds a skeletal, muscular remix of techno primitivism to an ep of quiet resistance… In Deepchilds own words The only way that dance music might ever be deemed apolitical, would be if its historical roots foundations were obliterated and razed to rubble. At this moment, these (particularly Black, Brown, Latin, Queer) historical threads feel more crucial to explore than ever - even as they are actively erased at large by ethno-nationalist interest. Im confounded by any insistence that club spaces and music should remain neutral or dissociated from the very real call to action to engage at this time. Im cognizant that during these fractured times most of us are utterly exhausted and genuinely divided - terrified of using words like genocide or fascism to name what we see unfolding around in the Middle East and America. Yet we must be willing to lean into our own shared trauma, legitimate grief and boiling rage at this injustice. What have we have communally allowed to pass to lead us to this moment of polycrisis.? We must be willing to name the unnamable and we must resist. I still believe that club spaces can seed the possibility for genuine change, and its my hope that bold political discource can be fortified by the dance.

Title: "Innocence and Suburbia - Student Is Teacher Remixes"

Emerging from the shadowy half-light of Acharné's debut album release, "Innocence And Suburbia", Seppüku Records presents 3 exceptional re-interpretations of the album's title track, and an exclusive unreleased original.

Unifying these remixes, is the unlikely fact that all artists involved are both practitioners, teachers and students of music; active students and co-workers in the artist's pedagogical sphere.

All re-interpetations are the result of both personal engagement with original album material, and experiments in composition strategy developed by Rick Bull (Acharné) during a recent semester spent teaching at the Australian Institute of Music, in close collaboration with fellow teacher Luke Warren (Microlot).

From Kcin's ruptured noise-floor aesthetic to Benefield's mutant piano inflections, we've experienced in these exceptional reworks a breathless reminder of the joy of 'unlearning' a little of what students are frequently taught remix culture 'should' signify in an often claustrophobic hyper-normalised sonic world.

All re-interpretations are unified by an shared sense of expansiveness, textural detail and stunning sound design, by some of the the antipodes most remarkable young composers.

The student is the teacher....

A remix I did a while back for my boyz from Booka Shade....available on Get Physical Music.

I enlisted the assistance of R2D2 and the guidance of Terence McKenna (with consultation from Ram Dass, of course) to make this.

Interestingly enough (and on a more serious note) this remix has been the subject of academic scrutiny due to its distinct break from the classic cannon of Get Physical remixes from the Booka Shade album, Movements. For a start, its made using NO Native Instrument plugins..;)
