It’s common knowledge that KOMPAKT’s TOTAL series serves as our yearbook, a musical wrap up of the past 12 months. Therefore it doesn’t come as a surprise that this year’s edition is informed by another pandemic year, where dancefloors were still mostly deserted and the devastating developments in Eastern Europe. Kompakt’s A&R team still kept on foot on the imaginary dancefloor, while scouting different realms apart from the big room euphoria. Anyway, brain dance has always been a key ingredient to our catalogue.

The Voigt brothers are opening this year´s vinyl edition in an unusually romantic fashion. ‘Why’ combines a bubbly FM bassline with lush washes of looped guitars. High off the (presumably high) heels of her recent album ‘Jesus Was An Alien’ she delivers a spanking new excursion into her sonic world, ‘The Hill’. Our Mexican friend Rebolledo makes his first ever solo appearance on TOTAL with his trademark hypnotic desert sound. Jürgen Paape is calling a spade a spade with ‘Le Monde À Changé’ – The world has changed indeed. Our prodigal son, Matias Aguayo, returns to the mothership with ‘Cinco Y Rojo’. An exercise in Chicago-esque groove theory paired with a cheeky visitor from Denmark. Spot the reference and win a pair of hooves. It’s hard to find a quality party around Cologne without Jonathan Kaspar on its bill. Rightly so, as he continues to hone his craft as an impeccable DJ and producer. Michael gives the tremendously talented Danish singer songwriter eee gee a proper Mayer treatment and Kompakt founding member Jörg Burger closes off the festivities with a groovy midtempo chugger that reminisces ‘Blue Lines’ era Massive Attack as much as the late Andy Weatheralls low slung psychedelia.

'Psycho-Acoustic Principles For The Dancefloor' is a record emancipated from the overload of information that led me spiralling into a schizophrenic over-thinking lately in my music. 'Outsider' has a pureness of confidence which celebrates the last 10 years of isolation away from the European scene, while contained just under its surface is a sense of melancholy which points to the paradox within myself. I believe effective dance- music plays with these human paradoxes, and in a time when the mask of confidence is amplified and commodified, music should tease out the human truth. I hope this record captures something essential which goes beyond the structural. If possible, I hope that it breaks down barriers and preconceptions as it delivers roses and intimacy into a place which allows the spirit to sing.

Resistor is Shunt Voltage’s debut release on Paisley Dark Records although they have appeared on the three Shelter Me complilation albums which raise funds for homelessness. This release comes hot on the heels of major support from Colleen “Cosmo” Murphy, who included their track Generator on her latest Balearic Breakfast album, Volume 3. She has also been giving heavy play to the bands limited vinyl release, To What Degree/Cowboys, which includes an A Space Age Freak Out remix of To What Degree.
Along with the original, the EP boasts a trio of remixes from Leeds based producers, Cosmikuro who is by now a regular contributer to the label, Paisley Darks very own A Space Age Freak Out, aka label boss John Paynter & Ben lewis and rising stars Adult DVD. Finally, the fourth remix comes courtesty of Swedish producer Mindbender (When Disco Goes Wrong) .
In the words of the band, Resistor came about by trying out some newly programmed synth sounds and FX and mixing with some sequencer riffs. This sound clash eventually filled out to a rough demo which the band tinkered around with eventually adding in a few vocal lines. The title continues their electrical theme and has a neat double edge to it.

https://soundcloud.com/moffandtarkin second Lagaffe instalment marks the label's 8th vinyl release. The release sports three original tracks from the Austrian-based Icelander and a remix from label boss Jónbjörn.

The record starts off with the track Buzz Lightyear, who flies us off out of the atmosphere filled beginning into the depths of the spacey synths, delays and feedback. 

Followed is the track Friends Be like, which feels like a refreshing strut down the boulevard where everyone you meet knows you and you know them but instead of saying hello you are wearing headphones and just strut down the street nodding, winking and walking in beat with true swagger. A track with confidence written all over it.

The flip side features the track Takk! which roughly translates as Thank You! in Icelandic. Maybe not roughly, but rather exactly. The track is dramatic and starts off rather stress inducing but takes a whole new direction when Moff & Tarkin adds in soothing piano chords and makes the track’s whole mood switch. Maybe its a fitting goodbye for the listener as you make your way through label boss Jónbjörn’s remix which has a very warm and feel good atmosphere, lush drums and elements that add on layers to the already great original. A very personal remix and a good ending to a great record that we hope you can enjoy.
