KIDS' TABLE (Chicago)

Kids’ Table aka Paddy Murphy (@dubious-music) spent his early rave days consuming every genre that the Glasgow party scene had to offer before moving to Oxford, where most weekends were spent record shopping and raving in South London. Since an early trip to Chicago and experiencing unabashed freedom of US dancefloors, he later moved to the Midwest city to harangue record shop staff and DJs alike for all the tips and IDs they have. 

This mix is collection of the electronic genres and rhythms, both new and old, that keep him infinitely fascinated by music from his diverse roots.

OMAR MARTENOT a.k.a. Bernadette Techneau (Paris)

Omar (@omarmartenot) is a Parisian-born DJ whose musical influences range from gipsy jazz to gabber techno by way of the fantastic Argentinian rock & roll. Discovering electronic music during a beautiful sunrise at Weather festival in Paris 2015, he then traveled from the sunny Croatian coast of Pula to wild Brooklyn, NY after parties, eager for more. His main local music influences are the mixing monster Joren a.k.a. Zaraf, the legendary Péripate venue, Roue Libre, and Microclimat collective's wild parties.

Half lobster, half human, Omar is before anything else a sound-fueled animal scouting for musical treasures and weird record sleeves. Bernadette Techneau is his female counterpart whose only goal in life is to play "we don't make prisoners" kind of techno at a NYC Bunker event, Detroit style.

This mix is about records crossing an ocean, Omar's deep affection for minimal house, and that subtle moment when night ends and the sun's rays slowly rise, breathing the second wind of the party.

RELEASE NOTES 

Denver-based Seafoam (Brian Cavender) is by far the most prolific of the talented Cavender brothers, but he has remained elusive for his 2+ decades long career in deep funk. After releasing a one-off 12-inch in 1999 on a small Denver label, Seafoam quickly found his way to the Guidance family by way of gatherings at Miami’s Winter Music Conference. A string of three twelves on Guidance from 2000 to 2003 cemented his legacy early in his career, however, having never quite reached the same heights as some of the Guidance greats, Seafoam’s output mysteriously declined around the time of the label’s demise. New releases dried up until the formative reissue campaign of Paris-based Rue De Plaisance in 2017, which culminated in the essential Collected Works 1999-2005 double LP. The flood gates opened, and a whole new generation of diggers and labels turned to his sound. And Seafoam, seemingly untouched by the passage of time, hunkered down in the studio with a steady release schedule—a new lease on life for the occult deep house assassin. 

“Swing Set” was birthed on Colfax Avenue and instantly became the focal point of Deep Club #07 with its heavy drum programming and distorted vocals. “Ha!” is a straight-ahead, no frills keyboard banger. On the flip, label acquaintance Snad (Kimochi Sound, Minibar, Courtesy of Balance, etc.) continues his meteoric rise with his signature tech house take on “Ha!”, while Seafoam injects a sample of his own drum work on “Jabo”, a trippy downtempo ode to James Brown’s esteemed drummer.

RELEASE NOTES

Like the best of them, Daniel Chavez got his start immersing himself in the nightclubs, dingy basements, and record stores of Chicago. Cycling around the South Side with records and a small PA system strapped to his back, he found himself at Smartbar and eventually began slinging records at Gramaphone alongside some of the deepest heads of his generation. Before long, Daniel made the jump to Brooklyn and landed at A-1 Records, while diving further into the global deep house community and soaking up knowledge like a sponge. After sowing seeds in obscurity for many years, Daniel saw the fruits of his labor in 2023 with a debut 12” on Halo’s Muted Noise imprint.

These tracks were designed and refined over the course of a year to meet the strict specifications of the Jewel soundsystem and dancefloor. “Writing on Water'' is a submersive, simmering tune that heaves and moans for eight minutes, but could probably go on for an hour. “Terras” strips away the layers to reveal a spacious, floating world supported by a fat, rolling bassline. On the flip, “Spiraling” echoes a feeling of early My Love Is Underground and the New York deep house golden era before it: a time of revolution. Finally, “67th Session” combines space and depth with a simple vibraphone riff that can go off day or night.

Denver-based DIY party crew Deep Club offers up its first release as a four-track VA sampling of the same name. This limited 12-inch delivers a wide variety of house cuts made for the dance floor. 

DEEP CLUB features three of Deep Club’s core members and one out-of-town favorite. Side A kicks off with Occidental’s “Move U”, a jacking house track that balances dreamy pads, crisp percussion, and a deep, rolling bassline. A filtered vocal sample emerges through the layers and drives the track forward. One of Denver’s newest and most talented hardware acts Falling Into Places turns in a somber yet equally driving tune on A2, “Sound Response”. The dynamic bassline and ethereal keys paired with relentless hats ensures the crowd responds accordingly. With Communikey Festival and Great American Techno Fes- tival bookings in 2014, and now their first appearance on wax, this duo is moving up fast in the ranks. On the flip, Bocaj, who is half of Falling Into Places, stretches his melodic muscle with “Everything Must Change”. The track’s airy production and clever sampling works on the floor thanks to swung acid stabs and a punchy kick that permeate the persistent vocal. The track keeps moving with big claps and a soothing chord progression that balances perfectly with the proddings from the 303 and the faint crowd noise in the background. Brooklyn-based Justin More rounds out the record with the introspective “Feeling”. Centered around an infectious, syncopated synth pattern that gradually builds and pulls back, strong claps and tenacious hats keep it floor-friendly regardless of the time of night. 

Just as Deep Club quickly established itself as one of the most passionate and tasteful parties in Colorado, its first vinyl release proves to be of equal quality. Packed with four original house cuts inspired by classic sounds from Chicago to Detroit, DC-01 is a standout debut 12-inch from a hungry group of newcomers.

Hot on his heels after a contribution to Deep Club’s debut 12” from last year, one of the crew’s most experienced resident deejays, Occidental, returns for the label’s second release and his first ever solo EP. Pariah Dreams aims squarely at the dancefloor with two all-killer, no-filler 45 RPM cuts. “Let’s Play” on side A is a 9-minute acid house bomb drenched in sweat and other bodily fluids. Porno excerpts ebb and flow throughout the track along with the dynamic hi-hats and bloopy synth theme for just the right amount for foreplay. Sparse acid squelches infiltrate the mix and drive it straight toward dancefloor climax.

“I Have Always” on the flip is the perfect complement to the scorcher on side A, and it still slams at the club. But this club is straight out of a seedy thriller film that is packed with all kinds of freaks. Two words: deep bass. It’s not every bar, but when the descending bassline falls through the texture, it hits with force. Wrap that up with a slew of intricate textures Occidental has crafted — subtle keys, ghastly sounds that eerily appear and vanish, and signature non-linear hi-hats, this tune remains tied to the dancefloor.

Deep Club Podcast #4: Gay Marvine

RYAN SCANNURA (Deep Club)

Unlike most of my mixes on the Internet, I recorded this one at home instead of at a party. I didn't plan any of it; I was picking records up off my floor as I went. This was just a few days after the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, and I had been listening to MFSB and Love is the Message a lot, so I put that on first, not even intending on mixing anything after. This spontaneous two-hour vinyl mix ensued.

At the time, the floor of my apartment was littered with Detroit house, techno, and electro records that I recently had bought at Submerge and Detroit Threads when I was there for Movement. Lots of UR classics and Detroit house that I found there. Also some stuff still lingering from my recent visits to Gramaphone and Logan Hardware (Chicago) and a few shops in NYC. I think the mix captures my style pretty well, both in terms of selection and presentation. I don't like sticking to any one style of music when I play records. The mix includes deep and jacking house, disco, acid, electro, and techno.       

This mix also captures a moment in time -- a time when I was simultaneously feeling down about what had just happened in Orlando and my rather disappointing time in Detroit a few weeks prior; it was my sixth consecutive year going to Detroit during festival weekend, but my first time skipping the festival. I spent a lot of time alone that weekend, and a lot of the music at the parties did not speak to me. It's hard when a lot of your friends are having "the best weekend of the year" and are quite vocal about it, and you're in a completely different headspace. 

This mix is the result of time reflecting on dark events happening in my country and in my life over the past several months.

Denver party crew Deep Club drops its second solo 12-inch EP featuring its diverse resident talent. Bocaj’s 2015 house anthem “Everything Must Change” (DC-01) lit up dancefloors, and “Marta” has been one of the most talked about tracks on the massive Gays Hate Techno 2.0 compilation. On "Already Used to It, Already Used" Bocaj merges his signature moody, groovy production skills and a knack for songwriting for a record who’s meaning extends far beyond the club. 

“Empty Is A Feeling” evokes deep, somber emotions in its swelling pads that amplifies further when the percussion drops out. Hi-hats and claps build the groove, making it equally fitting for a late morning closer or a mountain drive. “Restart” combines similar feelings with its continuous undulating rhythm and well-placed percussion, but the track nods to a different outcome: a break in the clouds and new adventures. “What’s Your Addiction” takes all of side B for a 10-minute journey across peaks and valleys and eventually, out of this world. Dreamy pads get the track brewing before the vocal sample bubbles up, but things don’t really start moving until several minutes in when the supernova synth propels the song into another dimension. DJ Di'jital has been a staple of the classic Detroit electro sound for more than two decades. While boasting early releases on the legendary Direct Beat imprint, he also shares releases on Underground Resistance and Twilight 76 Records. Di'jital is one of the few verteran Detroit innovators pushing the electro doctrine today. Di'jital launched his Di'jital Axcess label in 2012 showcasing mostly his own work. He's currently prepping his 8th installment for the label. 

With a knack for classic Detroit and Chicago house, techno, and electro bangers and skilled turntableism, we're thrilled to present this mix by one of our favorite Detroit artists.

Deep Club resident dj and head strobe controller Lone Dancer marks our label’s 4th entry with his first solo 12” on vinyl. After finishing two quality tape albums in 2017 already for Jacktone and Always Human Tapes, “House is a Tunnel” arrives packed with 4 club-ready jagged tekno bangers and one cut for the chillout room. Communication Side: the title track is a sure-fire party starter centered around a thick kickdrum and a repeating synth rhythm laced with weird percussion and synth stabs trickling through the texture. Next, “PO12-3” combines crisp claps, hats, and a central synth theme that calls for an intergalactic rave. “Colony Dwelling” kicks off the Transportation Side, taking our extraterrestrial dancers to a new dimension steeped in fog juice and flangers. “Floor” has a chill intro until it launches into a gritty track that throws broken kickdrums and distorted synths in every direction. Finally, “Night Rain” puts the party to rest utilizing soft pads while hinting at moments from the night before. 

Overall, “House is a Tunnel” is a fitting dance-centric conglomeration of Lone Dancer’s unique style of jacking techno, broken beats, and spaced out tracks that has set him apart in 2017.

Chris Torres (@chrstrrsmusic) is a drummer and DJ originally from Denver, CO and currently based in Oakland, California. His passion for music was fostered at an early age spending most of his teens and 20s gigging and raving in the copious Denver music scene. He hosted a radio show called the Jazz Odyssey broadcasted on KUVO 89.3fm in Denver from 2015 until his move in 2017. The show highlighted his style rooted in jazz, hip hop, fusion, world, prog, and dance music spanning past to present. Nowadays you can catch him equally comfortable behind the decks or playing drums in a jazz combo around the bay area. 

The mix is all about having a good time and not taking yourself too seriously. It highlights the love for deep grooves, funky rhythms, and jazz laden melodies with the intention of inspiring the listener to find their own slice of paradise.

Deep Club Podcast #26: Dj Screendoor

ZAPATA (Hardmatter Records / Berlin)

Zapata is a Berlin-based DJ and producer who runs Hardmatter Records (@hardmatterrecords) and the recently-inaugurated Streetman Records imprint.  Besides running these two labels, he also organises the “DiscoDisco” party at Berlin’s underground Repeat Bar, in which DJs are encouraged to break the four-to-the-floor mold by playing funk, jazz, afro, and anything else that falls in between. Alongside JVXTA, Zapata has worked with Javonntte and Malik Alston, among others, to curate a deep, jazzier electronic sound focused on live improvisation and soul. 

This mix reflects Zapata’s penchant for eclectic selections, but also keeps to dreamier, atmospheric sounds. The mix presents the DJ and producer in a more pensive and reflective mood, moving from the ambient sounds of Gigi Masin to dreamier New York cuts. In his own words: “I wanted to present artists and styles that matter to me and that have been overlooked, while presenting the deeper part of what Hardmatter is all about.”

Deep Club rounds out five years with its fifth addition to the label arm, a split 12-inch EP of raw, unbridled techno. Trespass / Cop Watch reaches outside of Deep Club’s inner circle, enlisting the talents of Grey People, one of the crew’s favorite American techno producers. After posting key releases for Proper Trax, CGI, and Public System Recordings, Grey People released 12-inches for Valcrond Video and Nerang Recordings, as well as a new album with fledgling French label 99cts Rcrds, all while commanding Nashville’s techno underground and helping run the budding TRAM Planet label and party crew. Adding to the fun, Occidental crawls back out of the shadows to contribute two brain-melting tracks to this split twelve. 

Occidental starts it off with two not-so-similar versions of “Trespass”. “Trespass (Juss Feel It)” delivers 140 BPM of filthy frequencies straight to the brain stem in just over four minutes. You juss gotta feel it. Next, “Trespass Dat A$$” slows the pace down and turns up the spanking. This one is all about the thick, pulsing kickdrum, lush pads, and deep moans. The flip side belongs to Grey People. “Intercepting Encrypted Messages” channels a repetitive, bloopy synth rhythm and powerful drums before the hi-hats and claps smack the dancefloor. “Cop Watch” draws on Grey People’s Chicago roots for a dynamic and frenetic dance.

Originally from Mexico City, the now Puebla-based DJ and producer ViiV (@viivunisono) has been emerging in the local underground scene during the past few years. She began her musical journey and craft of DJing while living in Chicago, immersing herself in the scene with the support of the local crew Naughty Bad Fun Collective. ViiV is a flawless vinyl crate digger DJ, frequently performing using vinyl-only records of refined minimal house and techno, although lately she has been introducing more electro and breaks into her sets. 

This is a special mix from ViiV, as it leans slightly toward a different sound than what she has pursued in the past, but it embodies the same minimal and conceptual vibe that one can always expect from ViiV's DJ sets.

Endash (@endash - Daniel Sharp, b. 1994, Grand Rapids, Michigan) is a musician, artist, and curator. The majority of his work deals with techno, public space, and suburbia. He is the founder of Moods, an online mix series of non-techno by techno people, and formerly ran MEMCO, a Southeast Michigan DJ collective. His first full-length release, Come Home, drops December 14, 2019.

Endash’s mix is an ode to former Berlin gem Farbfernsehen. The first club he went to in Berlin on a trip in 2015, its warm glow and house-friendly curation had offered the city an intimate alternative to its big cold boxes. The mix favors long transitions that pair Detroit house, jazz fusion, and acidic dub techno in order to reflect the optimism Farbfernsehen housed in the former TV shop from 2009 to 2019. Don’t be afraid to wiggle to this one.

André Orcutt (@andreorcutt) has been a DJ/producer since 2007 and P.U.N.C.H.I.S. resident since 2012. Since 2017 he has been the owner/managing director for P.U.N.C.H.I.S. André finds inspiration from many forms of musical styles, and P.U.N.C.H.I.S.; a collective of passionate DJs and music enthusiasts which host local, national and international talent every month at The Black Box in Denver, Colorado. Founded in 2009 by Ozuky and Ben Pitcher, P.U.N.C.H.I.S. held a weekly residency at the world-renowned Beta Nightclub from 2010-2019, and now reside at the highly-respected underground venue, The Black Box, every 4th Friday of the month. The brand also produced two record labels in 2014, and a vinyl-only label in 2016. The releases are available exclusively on Beatport and Deejay.de, and P.U.N.C.H.I.S. radio sessions broadcast on di.fm third Thursdays of each month at 12 PM MST hosted by Sergei Loginov.

Over the past year, André has been avidly collecting vinyl once again and has also returned to house music; specifically, moody, dubby, house. In recent years he has been an devoted collector and selector of dub techno, but this mix showcases his affinity towards those styles of house music and breaks.

He has become known as an innovative and consistent producer and a skilled and adventurous DJ, and his sound is an authentic extension of his soul and the pure talent that Jeremy possesses, deftly exploring the soul of yesteryear with a modern context.

Sinistarr's mix is a heavy retrospect of the "Autonomic" sound, a style of Drum & Bass that took over the scene inside and out over a decade ago. Helmed by DBridge & Instra:mental , this sound connected the dots between golden-era Drum & Bass, R&B, 80s and 90s soundscapes, Detroit Techno and Electro - an era which led to strength to strength vinyl releases and a heavily-lauded mix series.

POSI-TRACK (@positrack) is a shortened generic term for the GM-branded name "Positraction." It is a type of limited slip differential. To understand how limited slip differentials or LSD works, you must understand how a differential works, and how it relates to torque. In basic terms, a differential takes the power from the output drive of your engine and transfers it to your wheels.

JOEY M. (Denver House Authority / Denver)

Joey M’s DJ career started in 1997, and since then he has made a name and a reputation for himself as one of the best house DJs Colorado has to offer. Joey’s musical style has always been true to house from day one. He has held residencies at several of Denver’s most prominent nightclubs including Beta, The Beatport Lounge, Vinyl, Bar Standard, The Church and Funky Buddha, as well as throwing underground warehouse events and playing larger scale festivals. Joey M is part of Denver House Authority, a production company started in 2007 with partners Isaac H. and Brandon Bass.

Digging deep into his catalog of music to blend old and new deep house, house and tech house, this mix is a fun ride (and perfect example of his DJ sets) that Joey put together especially for Deep Club.

TYREL WILLIAMS (Immortal Sin, Secret Studio / SF)

Tyrel (@tyrelwilliams) was a mainstay of Chicago’s underground scene for years. He began mixing records in 1999. Soon later he landed a job at Gramaphone Records, where he spent many years building his collection of vinyl. He spent 2007-2011 building his Acid Test residency at Smart Bar, which was an all vinyl dance party in Chicago. In 2009 he took a job working with Jeff Mills and helping with Axis Records. Tyrel moved to San Francisco in 2011 where he is now a resident DJ for Housepitality, Acid Test, and Fleurs Du Mal. In 2014 he started a project with Bryan Bai-ee called Secret Studio with releases on their own label, Secret Studio Records. His next venture is his new vinyl label with C.L.A.W.S. called Immortal Sin, with the two releases featuring I.B.M. on the first record and Bill Converse on the second.

This mix was recorded for Housepitalty back in May 2020. Tyrel was feeling his old deep house collection, so he wanted to tap into that and play some of his favorite deep house records.

Deep Club Podcast #49: Tyrel Williams' Pharoah Sanders 80th Birthday Mix

RODNEY KHALASCHI (They’re Here, Housepitality / San Francisco)

Rodney Khalaschi (@rodney-kh) fully immersed himself in the San Francisco underground music scene upon moving to the city from Los Angeles in 2014 . With a respectful understanding of the unique culture that exists around collecting and playing vinyl, Rodney pursued deeper musical knowledge and a fine-tuning of his skills under the mentorship of Tyrel Williams (Acid Test, Immortal Sin). Rodney’s unwavering love for vinyl quickly extended into his life away from his decks at home, ushering him into working for Vinyl Dreams and RS94109; two of San Francisco’s most beloved record stores catering to dance music enthusiasts of all varieties. As Rodney fell into family-style relationships with artists and dancers in the Bay Area, his sound began to take shape. His DJ sets fall somewhere on the spectrum between sultry and energetic, always paying homage to the roots of dance music with their simultaneous Chicago and Detroit flavor, and never missing an opportunity to showcase music from local Bay Area artists.

Rodney has played a myriad of memorable and expressive gigs, such as his recent set at the Sunset Campout 10 year anniversary in 2019, as well as opening sets for names like BMG, Tin Man, and Justin Aulis Long. He is a resident for Housepitality SF, and co-founder of They’re Here, a monthly dance party with a cult following of dancers who prefer a raw, post-punk edge.

This mix is a special demonstration that was recorded in October 2020 from the deeper space of Rodney’s collection in light of feeling inspired by the new beginnings that were starting to unfold in his personal life.

Deep Club Podcast #51: Rodney Khalaschi

Deep Club is a record label, collective, series of parties, and devotion to American dance music that stretches from Denver, Colorado to Brooklyn, NY. Initiated in 2013 by a committed group of midwestern-raised DJs, Deep Club has cultivated a space in which developed and new forms of house and techno can be shared with the greater community. By marrying their club-level sound system with a DIY ethos, they present a focused vision and experience around their events. Over the last ten years Deep Club has hosted acclaimed talent like Marcellus Pittman, The Black Madonna, and Mike Huckaby at their dance-until-sunrise parties. A string of colorful and well-curated 12-inch vinyl releases and DJ mixes marks the outward and continuous growth of the Deep Club label concept.​ In 2021 a new chapter, Jewel, was carefully designed and executed in Brooklyn. Jewel aims to merge elements of American audiophilia with Midwestern and East Coast dance music roots.
