With a multicultural background and a passion for vinyl collecting, the Norwegian DJ and producer, Karina is a globetrotting electronic music artist whose nomadic lifestyle has profoundly influenced her sound. A deep appreciation for Detroit and Chicago house music, fused with a Berlin influenced minimalist approach to production, has earned her a dedicated following, and her vinyl selection is seductive, laid-back, and hypnotic while maintaining a driving, motivating rhythm.
For over two decades, Karina's professional music career has flourished, earning her recognition and appreciation within the global dance music industry. An avid collector and player of all things vinyl, she is one of the residents and creators of Ibizas successful weekly open-air party The Zoo Project. Berlin, her second home, exposed her to its raw creativity helping her develop her production skills whilst playing frequently at venues such as Kater Holzig, Sisyphos or Kitkat.  Apart from Europe, her passion for music has taken her on countless journeys around the world, where she has performed her unique fusion of house and techno music at renowned venues and festivals, spanning genres from disco to techno - all on vinyl!
Back in 2010, during her first visit to New York, Karina collaborated with Brooklyn's finest Blk Market, which resulted in a series of performances at various warehouses across the city over the early 2000s. She shared the decks with renowned artists like Robag Wruhme, Seth Troxler, and Daniel Bell, among others,
and was the first DJ to ever play at legendary Panther Room in New York. Karina has ever since frequently toured North America performing in top notch spots such as Housepitality in San Francisco, Creme de la Creme in Dallas, Smart Bar Chicago or Eaton Hotel in Washington DC. In The Big Apple she's known for her house and techno selection at several venues such as Brooklyn Mirage or Elsewhere to playing disco at smaller Manhattan hangouts like Nublu Classic. The C&K project launched together with NYC native Connie Yin at the end of 2018, had the two artists joining forces to play the final month of its existence at the legendary Panther Room in Williamsburg. Confident in their choices, C&K blend a variety of sounds, experimenting with 4/4 beats and unquantified live minimal arrangements.
Karina's production skills are respected, as evidenced by her releases on labels such as 'God Particle', 'Cymawax,' and 'Absence Seizure', and an upcoming vinyl release with Connie Yin as C&K on London's Decay Records. Her musical expertise and contributions to the industry have also earned her the role of Head of Industry Relations at Dance TV, cementing her position as a sought-after artist and respected leader in the world of electronic music.
Overall, Karina's music is an electrifying mix of global influences and production techniques, making her a dynamic force in the electronic music scene.

Winter - Spring Mixtape 2023

Our next Telling Tales comes from New York-based Naveen G (Cityfox/Listed), whose epic reinterpretation of The Owl by Twelve Minds will be released on our Second Editions compilation on Friday 23 October.

For his contribution to Telling Tales, Naveen has crafted a mix that encapsulates the push and pull of a long and memorable night out. It lets you get lost in the deep and hypnotic sounds by building a solid groove, then pulls you out with a single about-face that is both unexpected and welcome. The mix culminates in some songs that you would rarely hear out, but which provide a solid closing and almost encore feel to the set end.

Q: You released your music for about 15-20 years yet. Tell us about your mix. How did these tracks shape your artist career? 

A: Its all in a chronologic order. First contact with a kinda minimal, drum based music is come together from the beatles. I found it in a pile of old 7"s from my uncles music box. I couldn´t read, but the record with the apple was my favorite. I think that this song is still so modern. "Infinity" blew me away. Its actually not a theme of 4 or 8 bars, it has 5! That makes it, besides the music, so special. Still inpiring. "Rhythm Is A Dancer" was my first dancing experience on a school trip. These layers of sound and groove put me into a trance in seconds. Masterpiece. "L' esperanza" itself is a nice track and the video on TV made Sven look like a nice guy. So I decided to go on his party after the Loveparade 1995 which led me into the world of "real techno". That day I decided to become a musician for electronic music. "Gravitational Arch of Ten": Beauty, mystic and pure love for life. This is techno for me, I was never so interested in dark techno. On that party in 1995 Sven played black labs, space bar. On a tiny video cut I could find it and it stayed in my head and on my search list for over a decade. When I finally found it i made a remaster and edit. And eventually this year I rereleased it on soulful techno records. Richie Hawtin is not only a cool guy with a laser outfit and an image of a half god, he actually really created landmarks in electronic music. "Panic Attack" was probably 10 years ahead of time and is a blue print for minimal music which got big around 2003.  So in the late 1990s I entered the clubs and made my first records. Especially in the last years before 2000 the music was so hard and hypnotic. I only liked a few tracks, especially Marco Carolas "Hypnotisamus". I think you cant nail it more. In the early 2000s I started to focus on my roots, melodies and emotions. At that time Mathew Jonson popped up with his unbelievable melodies and aestetics. He inspired me a lot! I am still a big fan of him. One of a very few real musicians in techno. Until 2010 I dont remember so many tracks right now. Next mindblowing thing was Rainbow Serpent festival in Australia. Everybody in gothic or tribal costumes and smiling and dancing on a totally different music. Glitch Hop. 100 Bpm, kinda dubsteo like but with a totally different approach. Instead of beeing dark and as hard as possible, most of it is so positive and playful. I start right now to bring this style into my productions. My Favorite track of this and last years is "Sordid Affair". It touches me, it sounds great, its cool. What a perfect track. Maceo Plex is a real master in my eyes and deserves a mention here.

Q: You played your music all over the world yet. Which place has always been a special one for you, a place you won´t miss?

A: That is really difficult to say. There are so many great events and each has a special vibe. I love to play on open air festivals, but there are also a lot of great club events. Playing Thuishaven or Georgies Wundergarten, as well as Awakenings is always special. I was in Morocco for the first time this year and this was also a really great event with a lovely crowd. So it is not easy to pick the one and only here :)

Q: Which new projects can we expect soon?
 
A: We really worked hard on the complete Gabriel Ananda project the last months, and have a lot of amazing projects coming up. We will release a „Selected Remixes Compilation“ with 20 of my favorite remixes from the last years beginning of 2017, I´m already working on a studio album, some great cooperations and EPs and we will have the first label night from my new label Soulful Techno at Artheater in Cologne in February and this is just the tip of the iceberg. So it will be another exciting year.

Not only is he the label owner of LIKE Records, but as booking agent he is also the face of local club institution Reineke Fuchs. Known as an established DJ who performs weekly across Germany (and internationally), he is also a respected producer who has released on LIKE, Beats In Space and Dantze. Alongside Michaela Dippel he has even released on Kompakt Records under the production moniker DAMH. (A release that also featured DJ Koze and Matt Hamil remixes)

The Cologne-native has crafted a mix that will be on your playlist for a while to come. Filled with deep, dark and introspective tracks this mix will introduce David Hasert to whole new audience...

Within more than a decade now the collaborating production force named Luna City Express, derived and developed from the influences and musical upbringings of Norman Weber and Marco Resmann has turned into a consistent land- and trademark in the electronic music scene in terms of releases, remixes and remarkable DJ sets all over the place.
Incorporating a wide range of musical influences, with Norman being the Chicago House loving son to a Funk, Disco, Hip-Hop and Acid Jazz spinning DJ-father and Marco being an experienced producer which already had caused some trouble on the floor before they first met, the sound of Luna City Express is clearly revolving around House Music in its essential form but still remains open minded.
Ever since their debut single „Fresh“ skyrocketed off as one of the main club hits of 2005, Luna City Express have laid down a blueprint of modern, contemporary House Music on labels like 20/20 Vision, Lapsus Music, Exploited and Moon Harbour. A certain highlight has been their track “Mr Jack” which they released on their debut album “Hello from Planet Earth”. It received worldwide support from multiple house music heavy weights and ten years later, it still finds its way to the dance floors. Whilst their initial work was praised for showcasing a vast musical expertise in a long play format, Luna City Express continually gained momentum on dance floors worldwide due to largely successful collaborations released in the following years, with the likes of Roland Clark and Robert Owens.
Besides sharing a combined vision in the studio, the Berlin-based pair of electronic music aficionados is regularly smashing the city’s internationally renowned nightlife scene with remarkable DJ-sets in venues like Watergate, Sisyphos and Kater Blau - DC10, Woomoon and Ants in Ibiza and many more beautiful places, weighing in a combined experience of 45 years behind the decks as both started DJ'ing back in 1994.
Together they played shows all over the world and are, despite collecting heaps of air miles, still closely connected to the place where the Luna City Express success story all began – the beloved Muna Club in Bad Klosterlausnitz.

Let’s be honest: The world hadn’t been this way for a very long time, or even never before. We are in it together, all of us, regardless of nationality, religion, age, or of having or not having an atomic bomb; so alone, but so together; so far from each other, but feeling the same way; self-isolated physically but so open and free in our thoughts; stuck in such a difficult situation and missing the simple things, the things we so often took for granted. We could list a lot of sentimental stuff here, but we leave that to your discretion, so that you can think and decide what you have been missing the most and which one of your selves you haven’t been for a while. @soukie-windish thought for a long time about the name of the mix and came up with the title “Hugging Friends”. It’s a good one. A very good one.

1. How Did Corona change your artist life?

It changed a lot because I lost the main source of income from one day to the other. Besides the financial aspect, I really miss sharing music with other people on a big sound system and have the community spirit of a typical club night or day.
There are also some benefits like enough sleep, lots of sports and more time on the weekends for friends and family. I enjoy working in the studio every day and have a lot of upcoming music in the pipeline, e.g. a collaboration with Steve Bug and magic Black Soda for the 50-anniversary record of my label Rotary Cocktail Recordings. At the moment I try to refresh my programming skills and learn VST developing (plug-ins for audio processing) because I have a lot of ideas for new useful tools in the studio.

2. Where did you record the mix and how did you feel?

I recorded the mix at home and I enjoyed it a lot because there is so much new amazing music out there. It's really sad that we can't dance together at a club or open air.
Sometimes I had goosebumps because of some really emotional songs. In these moments I´m not the DJ but the biggest fan of the track and dance like nobody is watching.

3. What are your wishes for the time after Corona?

First of all, I hope there will be no second wave of the virus during the winter months. So many clubs and artists would have to give up and it would damage our scene for years. I wish that all clubs & festivals can survive and hopefully, we can continue our culture like before corona. What we don't need is the superstar DJ stuff with crazy amounts of fees, private jets, and where social media is more important than music. Bye-bye Instagram DJs.
