The latest signing on Iptamenos Discos is the stunning debut EP by Dina Summer that features remixes by Black Light Smoke, Wiener Planquadrat & Time To Sleep. Fronted by Greek native Dina P., ‚Dina Summer’ is a collaborative band project by the producer Kalipo and the DJ/producer couple Local Suicide. 
After performing on local radio stations as a teenager, Dina began making waves as one of the first female DJs in Thessaloniki while also pursuing her studies at University. She later moved to Berlin where she met her husband with whom she formed the duo Local Suicide. The powerhouse has made a name for themselves releasing on labels such as Eskimo Recordings, Lumière Noire, Ombra INTL, TAU & more. Through their exploits, Beatport declared them as one of the key figures in the uprising dark disco scene. Around 2013 they met Bavarian born Kalipo while raving at Rock am Ring festival. At the time he was performing at the festival with his band, Frittenbude who are famous in German speaking countries for their unique mix of electro, punk & rap. Kalipo recently released his critically acclaimed fourth long player on KI Records which features artists such as Rampue, Ira Atari Oberst & Buchner & more.
It wasn’t until 2019 that the trio finally starting working on music together. The result was a unique blend of late ‘90s electro with elements of ’80s disco and new wave. 
Their first outing ‘Who Am I’ is a new wave / disco-hymn consisting of German & English vocals. They’re accompanied by stomping drums and a beautiful synthesised melody laid over a synth-arp that maintains the tracks momentum. 
The Club Version of ‘Who Am I’ is slightly faster and hits a little harder. In this track one can clearly hear the trio’s infamous ‘technodisco’ sound at work. The drums still stomp but with more depth and the synth-arp has a more rugged texture when compared to that of the original version.
The B-Side, titled ‘Fortune Teller’, is a groovy dance-floor bomb with nasty moroder-ish bass-arps, epic strings, spoken word elements and a slick breakdown followed by a banging and cascading drop that sucks in and hypnotises listeners.
Legendary US producer & composer Jordan Lieb aka Black Light Smoke’s take on ‘Fortune Teller’ turns the tune into a deep electro weapon with a wobbling bass-lines that ride perfectly with the drums and groovy synths. The glitchy vocals and the ominous sound of the strings give this track an awesomely dark atmosphere. 
Austrian duo Wiener Planquadrat – who recently released their debut single ‘Stillstand’ on Iptamenos Discos – transform ‘Who Am I’ into a masterpiece reminiscent of Soulwax’s iconic sound. This is emphasised by the dirty and bouncy groove, rugged tones and drums that are sure to make your body snap along with them. 
Croatian producer Time To Sleep, who recently released tracks on Disco Halal, Permanent Vacation & more, delivers a glitchy 128BPM dub techno re-interpretation of Fortune Teller with driving drums and a rolling bass-line that doesn’t let up. It’s filled with warm reverb filled percussion and an ethereal synth lead mid way through that makes you feel as though you’re floating while rounding off the EP

Berlin-based Curses blends New Wave and Post-Punk with his ghostly vocals and guitars, punctuated with flashes of 80's EBM and New Beat. 

Whether it's performing live at the late Andrew Weatherall's Convenanza Festival, or DJ'ing in the main room at Circoloco DC-10, Curses manages to somehow bring his punk and new wave attitude to all dance floors small and big. Always keeping true to his unique take on the darker side of disco.

The debut album from Curses, 'Romantic Fiction' dropped on Jennifer Cardini's Dischi Autunno imprint in October 2018, launching his live act which brings the guitars, vocals and live energy of the album to stage as a duo.

Curses has released a handful of EP's on labels such as Hoga Nord, Bordello A Parigi, Throne Of Blood, and his own imprint, Ombra International. Curses recently curated a 2 X Vinyl LP Compilation with Eskimo Recordings ('Next Wave Acid Punx'), showcasing the key musical influences that define the Curses sound, and peers within the surrounding underground scene.

The essence of smoke is mystical and evocative and is a fundamental human symbol that crosses all boundaries. Since man’s first fascination with fire, which remains at the heart of civilisation, smoke has been seen as the embodiment of this powerful element. We can imagine early man sitting around life-giving fire, watching the smoke rise and appearing to reach to heaven when man could not. Rising into the atmosphere, into mysterious realms that man could not comprehend.

Since the dawn of time we’ve been fascinated by smoke. It seems to symbolise our constant striving to reach the heavens, or the beings that might dwell there. Since man first turned his eyes skywards, smoke has been used as a conduit for prayers, seen as the souls of the dead rising into heaven, for energy shifting and even communication.


A third Native American use would be ‘smudging’. Smudging is done to drive away sickness and bad energy and to help centre the people taking part in the ceremony. Traditionally a bowl is filled with tobacco (ah-say-ma), sweet grass, sage, and cedar. The smudge pot is fanned with a feather all around the room so that the smoke reaches every corner and then every person in the room. Each person bathes in the smoke, starting with the heart area first, next the head area, and then the arms, then downward toward the legs.


There is a propensity for using smoke, as you can see, for protection against malign energies. 
Not surprising really, because after all, fire is pure energy, and so the smoke would be seen as a concentration of that benevolent force. And it’s easy to see how its swirling vapour would be seen as something which could envelop and destroy any evil that might be near.

A Mirror for the Sun is a 14-track cycle of tempos, moods, and hums exploring different facets of a softly solar energy. The compilation departs from the Souq’s signature sound, infusing it with a rotation of new elements. Niki Sadeki’s curation brings more of an uncanny Berlin-style voltage to the label’s earthy tradition, shaped by her own learned perception of deep house. The result is a cosmic and crunchy experimental blend, with mingling moments of downbeat drama and upbeat glow.

When seen through a mirror, the sun’s light only reflects fragments of a fuller picture. Mirror for the Sun echoes this sentiment. Each track contributes an angle to an overall picture of sentience and connection.

We couldn’t think of a more suited selector than Vancouver based Niki Sadeki, whose vision has refracted across an impressive stream of radio shows, guest mixes, and podcasts over the years. Niki’s ability to musically embark a living-room or a car ride as much as she can a dance-floor is a quality we prize right now more than ever.

This compilation will return annually to Souq, shedding its skin and renewing itself along the way.
