Mathew Jonson presents Freedom Engine live at SGP 2023

For this instalment of the Rhythmic Culture podcast, we're excited to welcome the Canadian producer Mathew Jonson on the series. Whilst essentially a house and techno producer, Jonson has also been involved in many crossover projects including Cobblestone Jazz, Midnight Operator and the Modern Deep Left Quartet. For this instalment, Mathew presents a live recording of his project Freedom Engine at SGP 2023. 

"The recording is a mix of live improvisation via synthesizers and drum machines and tracks played from a DAW. Instruments from Roland (SH-101, TR-8S, SH-01A, T-8, and Demora), Elektron (Machinedrum), Midas (V240), and TC-Electronic (various effects) were used in the performance. 

The set also includes partial tracks and jams written and produced by Units and Measurements, Mathew Jonson, Plaid (MJ Remix of "Dragon Chase"), and Freedom Engine in collaboration with Magda."

We recently sat down with Yamour, who spent years refining her musical knowledge at the iconic Hard Wax store in Berlin. Rooted in American House & Techno, Yamour’s sets are all about the groove. Joining us this month is one of the most consistent producers around at the moment. In the past six years Alex has been releasing exciting material through local Stockholm labels such as Abdulla Rashim's Northern Electronics, Bossmuik, and Aniara Records which put out his first record back in 2010. Aniara Records is also responsible for putting out the majority of his output as one half of Genius Of Time, the irresistible DJ/Live act he formed with his good friend Nils Krogh but the duo's punchy releases also found a home on Clone's Royal Oak and Gerd Janson's Running Back. The past two years have seen him focusing primarily on his solo output as Dorisburg and his most ambitious project to date arrived earlier this year on John Talobot's Hivern Discs in the form of the Irrbloss LP.

Today he's prepared a very special mix of mysterious and rare hypnotic House cuts which he recorded straight to cassette through a studio console and analogue outboard. He told us the mix is for "late night internet exploring...something to get lost within while browsing the unknown corners of the web... or possibly what a rave could sound like on an abandoned space station". Enjoy!

Born in 1980 and raised in the Detroit area, Luke Hess has harnessed a deep appreciation for electronic music and the expression of the underground movement. 

His background in mathematics and engineering has given him a scientific approach to the dance floor, using frequencies, tones, and soundscapes to transform surroundings and mood. 
In 2003 he recorded his first promotional mix CD release for UR/Submerge. Since then, his faith based music production has landed him a seat with FXHE and Planet-e in Detroit. 

His debut album was released in early May 2009 by Denmark based label Echocord. 
In 2010 he began his own interpretation of Detroit techno with his new Detroit project and record label - DeepLabs. 

His sophomore album “Keep On” was released on FXHE records in 2012 and received a Recommended 4.5/5 rating on Resident Advisor. 

Hess is regarded as a perfectionist in his live sets and behind the decks layering his tracks in a very detailed and hypnotic manner. 
He has played at notable venues and events such as Tresor (Berlin), Culture Box (Copenhagen), Berghain (Berlin), Unit (Tokyo), Detroit Electronic Music Festival (Detroit), Fabric (London), The End Up (San Francisco), Golden Pudel (Hamburg), Sirup (Zagreb), Weekend Club (Berlin), Cubic Club (Madrid), Space (Ibiza), The Bunker (NYC) and many other venues all over the world. 

Luke’s continued hard work in the studio and in his performances combined with his unyielding interest in technology and sound will no doubt stimulate the boundaries of electronic music.
