As a blogger and hopeless music addict, I spend endless fruitful hours scouring the vast reaches of the internet in search of magic... on a quest for the next goosebump-inducing melody, a new catchy earworm, or an addictive-to-sing vocal hook. I hunt music that suits my emotional needs, music I can feel, and relate to. My efforts reward me with the soundtrack to my daily life, and the collection of treasures I amassed, a reflection of myself. This podcast is a medley of tracks that, for whatever unique reason, grabbed me at the time that we happened to cross paths, and suited my mood at the time of making the podcast, which happened to be melancholic... with a tinge of darkness.

I make these for myself, but if you happen to enjoy it, that's cool too. :)

With a unique dark and melodic sound characterized by moody tension and dramatic synth stabs, French producer THe WHite SHadow @thewhiteshadowfr [Einmusika, Crossfrontier Audio, Tenampa, Chilli Mint Digital] is easily a favourite up-and-coming new artist of 2014. You may have heard “Snowflake” on Alex Niggemann’s Snowbombing podcast, “The Sky” in Hernan Cattaneo’s Podcast 186, or “Flying” in Dave Seaman’s Radio Therapy October.

This incredibly awesome podcast progresses perfectly as a journey into deeper and darker, almost sinister depths, commencing with a subtly foreboding Middle-eastern sounding rhythm before descending into thick moody vibes… then, halfway in, things take a turn towards dark and ominous techno, heavily brooding over forcefully driving beats.

If you have ever heard Nils Frahm’s “Says,” (and if you haven’t, I recommend immediately listening), you probably share the same sentiment as me, in that successfully executing a remix of such an incredible and intricate work of musical genius without destroying it would be an extremely difficult, if not impossible, feat to accomplish. Some unknown remixer (update: it’s The Three Hands Collective) has managed to pull it off, more than doing justice to the original by maintaining the highlight on Nils Frahm’s gorgeous, complex and tension-building melodies, but drawing it into the realm of danceability with the addition of subtle embellishing sounds that do not overwhelm or detract from the beauty of the original, and selective periods of percussion, including dropping the beat back in at the precisely the goosebump-inducing zenith of the melody. It’s a very slow-building and anticipatory auditory journey requiring extreme patience, but the payoff is huge and well-worth it, justified by the wave of chills sent down my spine by the absolute melancholic bliss. You can hear it in Italian duo Mind Against‘s recent phenomenal dark and rather minimal set recorded at Goethebunker in Essen, Germany on Soundcloud at the 1:10:00 mark.

Nils Frahm - Says (The THC Rework)

As a pianist since age 5, and professor of music theory and saxophone player from 18 onward in Paris, the influence of French producer Mashk's extensive musical background is pervasively evident in his melodic approach to dance music. Right at home on Solee's label Parquet of Germany (one of our favourites), he has woven such gorgeous and emotive tracks like "Home" and "Last Breath," and more recently has released his debut 17-track album, the aptly-named "Melodies."

This mix is a rich tapestry of emotion, including original productions "Hermes," the gorgeously twinkling "Home," "Danke Normen F," and others; as well as Recondite - "Garbo" (Original Mix), Matthew Dekay - "Fangtango" (Original Mix), and Florian Rietze - Treibhaus (Mpathy Remix).

Francys lives up to this assertion with his latest dark and melodic EP “Different Shapes,” featuring the dramatic strings of “Nibiru,” the haunting melody of “Arcenciel,” and the eponymous “Different Shapes.” Francys showcases his uniquely diverse and interesting approach to cultivating a sonic experience in this podcast, which includes his own excellent and emotive productions.

As dusty-hearted burner-gypsy-nomads here at DeeplyMoved, hypnotic, Middle-Eastern influenced tunes are among some of our favourite to get lost in, and just that precise flavour of otherworldly, desert vibes prevail in Helmut Dubnitzky and Jackspot’s mesmerizing “Keres,” by way of Romania-based imprint Cyclic Records. Off the eponymously titled EP “Keres,” the track’s namesake is a nod to Greek mythology, in which “the Keres were female death-spirits,” according to my inside sources at Wikipedia; an apt name for the mysterious aura conjured, just slightly tinged with melancholy. Subtle in its approach, various mystical elements like glittering chimes are patiently presented, floating aloft on a haze of ethereal pads. Strumming notes set in an exotic scale lead the melody, with occasional bassy oscillations, subtle pitch-bending in the strings, and other slightly trippy sounds lending surrealism to the mood. It’s such a lovely and enthralling journey.

Beautiful, relaxing ambiance meets spacey, cosmic elements in Jona's "Space Jungle" (feat. David K), off his debut album "Sidetracking" comprised of 10 eclectic and sonically diverse musical offerings on Alex Niggemann's AEON label. It's a lovely, floaty soundscape, with flourishes of airy pads lending a lush atmosphere. 
True to its name, hints of space influence like trippy detuned strings greet the opening of the track, and 
more pleasantly eccentric embellishes intersperse throughout. Jona's distinctly unique style creates a very blissful vibe in this special tune.

Days are disappearing and nights are taking over. We witness a burst of colour just before it clears space for the bright white blanket. And this new season brings another Amselcom release.

Sweden’s Victor Norman is guided by the signs of the time in his extraordinary track “Hymn”. He gently unites depth and gloom with fragile melancholy to form a moving and sensual track.

Bernstein and Birds of Mind attend to the original, each concentrating on a different characteristic. While the former adds drive to underline the verve of the tune, the French duo intensifies the melodic and frisky side of the track.

To round off the release, Victor teams up with slowmo specialist Harro Triptrap in a hot turn. “Mimikry” first appears to be a peaceful creature, but its rogue character eventually shows itself.

Winter treats us to storms and nights of fire. And these feelings are captured by the photographer Xiao Yang, adding the perfect optical surrounding to the release.
