Sickened shock settled over them slowly. Thacher held the rod loosely, calmly, pointing it at Erickson. "We knew you three were on this ship," he said. "There was no doubt of that. But we did not know what had become of the City. My theory was that the City had not been destroyed at all, that something else had happened to it. Council instruments measured a sudden loss of mass in that area, a decrease equal to the mass of the City. Somehow the City had been spirited away, not destroyed. But I could not convince the other Council Leiters of it. I had to follow you alone." Thacher turned a little, nodding to the men sitting at the bar. The men rose at once, coming toward the table. "A very interesting process you have. Mars will benefit a great deal from it. Perhaps it will even turn the tide in our favor. When we return to Marsport I wish to begin work on it at once. And now, if you will please pass me the briefcase.

We call it "claustrophobia", because the lack of light is always tied up with enclosed places, so that fear of one is fear of the other. You see?' 'And those people of the tunnel?' 'Those people of the tunnel consisted of those unfortunates whose mentality did not quite possess the resiliency to overcome the claustrophobia that overtook them in the Darkness. Fifteen minutes without light is a long time; you only had two or three minutes, and I believe you were fairly upset. 'The people of the tunnel had what is called a "claustrophobic fixation". Their latent fear of Darkness and enclosed places had crystalized and become active, and, as far as we can tell, permanent. That's what fifteen minutes in the dark will do.' There was a long silence, and Theremon's forehead wrinkled slowly into a frown. 'I don't believe it's that bad.'

It was morning, bright and calm, with no sign of the deluge that had taken place the previous night. The sun was still low in the sky, but Robot City was alive and active. He was in the very heart of it here, the hub upon which the wheel of the city turned. He could see the aqueduct that had brought him cutting through the city like a spoke, and he could see other aqueducts, other spokes, slicing through the wheel of the city. And he began to think of the areas between the spokes as quadrants. Robots in large numbers hurried quickly through the streets, always going somewhere, always busy with predetermined tasks. Many of them were disappearing into the treatment plant. He moved a small distance from his exit point, then looked back at the reservoir, shocked to find a forest there! Then he realized that the forest had been planted above the reservoir, the land area serving double duty. But why a forest? Not for robots, certainly. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed the large, wheeled vehicle that had been tracking him within the reservoir moving through the exit point to the outside. He looked back at the city, then up at the forest. He would find escape in its random chaos.

There may be no better way to appreciate the vast extent of the city of Cairo than to inch around the circumference of the platform at the top of the Cairo Tower on the island of Gezira. As far as the eye can see from this narrow 360-degree ledge, there is city. A hazy sky gives way to the world’s longest river, the Nile, meandering almost parallel to the Muqattam Hills to the east. Only the Nile hosts respite from the ancient and modern, from the stone and sand. Twenty million people encased in a gray concrete sea press in.  Any discussion about Cairo begins with the Nile, al-bahr—the Arabic word for sea. The Nile waters enabled people to develop civilizations along its banks for millennia. The Nile swelled during the summer heat, fertilizing its valley and delta with 140 million tons of rich silt from Aswan to the Mediterranean Sea. Until the construction of the Aswan High Dam in 1970, the river played an important role in communication between Upper and Lower Egypt, served as the highway to transport minerals, grains, and materials, and enriched the land with rich silt for bountiful harvests.

Blissfully, her presence would be everywhere in the house, a thousand echoes of her distilled into every matrix and senso-cell, each moment of emotion blended into a replica more intimate than anyone, apart from her dead husband, could ever know. The Gloria Tremayne with whom I had become infatuated had ceased to exist, but this house was the shrine that entombed the very signatures of her soul.
