"Darryl is a crazy mysterious person. From what I know, he grew up alone with his mother without being much in contact with the rest of the world. His father's music record collection was the only connection with the other cultures and the world. Somehow he got a weird idea in his early childhood that this record collection contained all the music that had been ever created. He persuaded himself that the only way to make new music is to combine bits and pieces from that collection together. So he kept listening to those records and after a while, he was able to recollect their parts and combine them in his head — thus creating new music from what was already there. My role in this process is to communicate with Darryl and transfer his ideas into reality".

Our thoughts were suddenly occupied with the music we could hear in nature. Darryl could talk for hours about the different rhythms she could feel in the swaying of trees, about harmonies hidden in the silent hum of the forest, melodies the wind played as it blew through the ragged rocks. Sometimes, in the high summer when the ancient forests were full of birds singing, and buzzing with bees and the trees were crackling in the heat, I was almost worried there was too much for her to take in. “How do you decide what to listen to? Which pattern out of those hundreds and thousands around you is right?” I asked her once. “We should never look for the brightest light, nor should we try to sing the loudest sound,” she replied. “We should instead try to experience the moment of perfect stillness between two flaps of a bird’s wings; hear that utter silence between lightning and thunder. That is when the universe reveals its deepest secrets and even the impossible will blossom, like a flower out of a stone.”

Deeppa Record is turning five with a superb two-part compilation, and this second half dives into deeper waters than the first. It comes from a mix of both longtime contributors and contemporary artists whose evolving sounds inspire the label's direction today. Lars Behrenroth remix kick off with a tender and vulnerable deep house sound and Christophe Salin's gets more physical but no less gooey with its lush pads and rubbery kicks. Elsewhere, Thierry Tomas layers up lush r&b vocals and warming synth hues, Darryl Baalki brings jazzy expression to his fulsome house grooves and Eloi's 'Take Your Time' is a dusty closer laced up with lovely pianos.
