FATHER FIGURE brings big daddy energy to the dancefloor. Born in the mystic swamps of Louisiana and collecting records since the age of 3 means you’ll get a multi-layered genre-bending techno house jazz infused rave vibration at the club. However, the sunrise set is his fetish. Calling the light back to the sky with music is a powerful connected grounding meditation. It’s an honor to curate these ritualistic moments for dancers as they explore what it’s like to exist outside the body. Anything from unabashedly kitsch disco to blissful ambient and percussive breakbeats can pop up in a Father Figure set….Ready?

As part of our countdown to RA.1000, a milestone in the 24-year history of RA's weekly mix series, we're switching up the usual format. The next few editions will pair two acts who complement each other's strengths, offering a fresh take on a particular community, scene or style. 

This week, we're zeroing in on Ron Trent and Ash Lauryn, two names who fly the flag high for old-school US house—a foundational pillar of the electronic underground. 

Trent takes the A-side. Hailing from Chicago, the birthplace of house, the pioneer is a master of finding the sweet spot where machine music meets organic instrumentation.  Listen to any DJ set or record in his extensive back catalogue and you'll find a wealth of exquisitely expressive melodies and deep, spiritual frequencies, making him the ideal narrator for any survey on house. (If you've only got a moment, sink into "Morning Factory," nine minutes of perfection.) 

Trent's return to the RA Podcast, 19 years after his debut in 2006, represents his many decades of expertise in fusing funk with gorgeous musicianship under the umbrella of heart-stirring house. Some may call it a masterclass but to us, it's just Trent doing what he does best.

Listened to as a whole, RA.996 is a powerful snapshot of house's elegance, class and most importantly, understated yet innately euphoric joy.

Perhaps best known under his former Volte-Face alias, this wide-ranging hour finds Clark reigniting his fundamentally eclectic sensibility, seamlessly blending records from Black Merlin, Idjut Boys and The Parallax Corporation, spanning twenty-five years of music at the authentic margins.

“I started DJing nearly 20 years ago, at least partially inspired by the way Erol used to play at Trash and later Bugged Out and beyond. I was lucky enough to book him over the years at our Adventures In The Beetroot Field parties as well as Field Day and even the Lock Tavern, which I used to programme back then. As I drifted more towards exploring techno under my Volte-Face moniker, our paths diverged somewhat, and a few years went by when I didn't bump into him or see him play all that often. So this mix feels like a homecoming of sorts, and an expression of a rekindled musical freedom and a cherished friendship. Finn Johannsen is a Berlin-based DJ, writer, and impresario at Berlin club Paloma, renowned for his encyclopedic knowledge of music and deep, eclectic selections that span disco, house, techno, reggae, and beyond. Active since the late 1980s, Johannsen has built a reputation for narrative-driven DJ sets that seamlessly connect musical histories, often highlighting overlooked gems and rare cuts. Beyond the decks, he is a respected music journalist and interviewer, contributing insightful commentary on dance music culture and its social contexts. His work, both as a selector and a writer, reflects a lifelong commitment to preserving and expanding the dialogue around underground music.

Jamaican born DJ Debbie Graham, got her start spinning music in reggae clubs in Atlanta. After years of playing various genres of music in several clubs in Atlanta and Florida, she landed numerous engagements focusing mainly on playing disco and house music. 

In the late 80s and early 90s, as the underground house music scene was thriving in Atlanta, she started performing at a number of clubs such as Bell Bottoms, Traxx, Tongue and Groove and a residency at Club Jaguars, all located in Atlanta. She has had the opportunity to open for house music legend Crystal Waters and has shared the decks with several heavy hitters in the house music scene including Jesse Saunders (Chosen Few), Alan King (Chosen Few) Dj Minx, Stacey Hotwaxx Hale and Hippie Torrales (Zanzibar). 

DJ Debbie Graham is also the CEO of Underground Soul Movement and is featured on a number of Internet radio stations.

Although she continues to play all genres of music, house music is still one of her favorite genres to play.
