"This mix is a live recording from a recent visit to Podlasie in Chicago. When I gig, I think less about how I’m supposed to sound and focus on recalling, reconnecting with, and sharing music I love. As such there’s a ton of old favorites in the mix that span eras, genres, and moods. It is a capture of old favorites meeting new favorites. This ambassadorial practice of compiling new and old is a symbolic act of finding a sense of familiarity within unfamiliarity. It creates a level of genuineness that is vital for world building and sonic transportation while being resistant to consumption, possession, and escape. It highlights how one can encounter a new world without leaving this planet. Worlds are made of context and exchange; planets are made of matter, gas, and gravity."

ExHouse aka Experimental Housewife is a Bay Area-based DJ and live performer of 25 years. Over the last 10 years, she has become an icon of deep commitment to electronic sound and the art of storytelling. Deemed a "pillar of the underground" by RA, ExHouse started out as a teen raver, obsessed with the sound and attitude of the electronica of the 90s, before being drawn to ambient and post-rock in the early 00s, from which she takes much technical and aesthetic influence. Today she brings diverse cataloging and fluid turntable savvy to the dance floor, causing holes to appear in people's shoes while making "it look so easy". With an ear for contemplative bangers, deep grooves, and heavy drone, ExHouse has released original dance and ambient works on Jacktone, Schmer, True Indigo, Identity Spectrum Records and more. She owns and operates Perfect Location Records, a highly curated cross-medial label geared toward the greater distribution of honest and independent electronic music. She has toured North America and Europe and participates in a number of underground-forward outlets.

"I often myself being responsible for a film's music, but also fighting for its absence." The composer discusses movie scoring, his love of opera and his new album, Scope Neglect, on Mute Records.

The multidisciplinary Australian artist Ben Frost might best be known for his score work: he's soundtracked Netflix shows like Dark and its spinoff 1899, as well as a number of major motion pictures and video games. While his formal studies were in visual art, he started experimenting with music-making from an early age, homing in on a unique sound that is truly a melange of his influences in punk, black metal, classical and modern minimalism. His unique approach to composition has led him to some extreme places to capture field recordings, like the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Amazon rainforest and the empty hulls of fishing boats docked on the banks of Icelandic port towns. Artists like Steve Albini, Björk, Brian Eno and the band SWANS have tapped Frost to work with them, and he's performed extensively as a solo performer and as part of an A/V outfit at the world's biggest festivals and art world circuits. 

In this episode of the RA Exchange, he sits down with senior producer Chloe Lula to discuss his latest venture, a full-length album, Scope Neglect, on Mute. It pulls heavily from his proclivity for guitar music and metal, but still nods to the cinematic minimalism that has become one of his work's primary tropes. Frost dissects some of the recording techniques he used to make the record—he borrowed from the methods used by Mark Hollis of the band Talk Talk—as well as his studio practice, his love of opera and his approach to writing scores. About the mix: House music has always struck me as a manifestation of profound, glowing joy and being remarkably human - sometimes in sharp contrast with murkier, shadowy wormhole rave music shrouded in fog and strobe lights - perhaps the dancefloor equivalent of bubbling laughter where other dance music is whispering prayer. It's this quality of warmth that is so exciting and comforting, and allows everyone to groove and celebrate life together, that makes house music familiar and unifying. I wanted to take this energy and sensibility but make it more dreamy, gauzy, atmospheric, and decorated with some twinkling sentimentality - hence dreamier pads, emotive synths, sparkling arpeggios, some trance-adjacent leanings and references. Particularly as the seasons change and we tip over into longer days, brighter light, and the beginning of blooming, I thought to conjure a vernal haze for waking up from cold winds to new, surprising sunrays - music for jostling yourself into big smiles with thoughtful, jubilant company.

Australia is pushing things forward in the best way. For a long time the country self confessed to feelings of isolation and disconnection from the broader world of electronic music. Taking things into their own hands, this has very much changed and in all honesty some of the best and most exciting DJ’s are really down under.

SLG is a record label run by Strict Face – a producer and DJ who is helping to push a new wave of Bass music. It’s hard hitting, off piste and all over the place – moving quickly between tempos with jarring, disjointed sound design it’s fast paced and exciting.

This mix is very much a testament to that frenetic energy.

Based in Adelaide, he represents a new school of thought and is giving things a much needed shake up.

Strict Face: The Ransom Note Mix

30,000AD is a DJ and hybrid performer raised in Chicago. She calls her style of music “TDM”  (Transgender Dance Music). She also is moving to another live project called infinityBC and is part of the sound collective Spiral Generator. This set was recorded in July, 2023 and is a mix of a tracks, a sampler, and two drum machines.

No matter what style she is presenting, she exercises her knowledge of technical DJing, from strange pitch bending to multiway beat matching. Unsurprisingly, she “keeps it experimental”.
ExHouse is an experienced touring artist having played destinations such as Montréal, Seattle, Philadelphia, Copenhagen, Belgrade, and her once-home of Berlin. She has released music on Jacktone Records as well as various international labels, including ANTIME and Schmer. Currently, ExHouse runs Perfect Location Records and is active in San Francisco as a co-manager of the legendary Run The Length Of Your Wildness, a gathering founded by Cherushii and Roche for adventurous dance music enthusiasts.
