FOr the 114th entry in the Honcho Podcast Series, we welcome Detroit's, @etta_sound. An Ohio-born, Detroit-based DJ, writer, and self described technomusicologist, DJ Etta occupies most of her time scheming with her crew Blueprint, curating mixes for Moods, working as a tour guide at Exhibit 3000, or documenting the impact of black women in dance music. Her sets take a free form approach, basking in unabashed joyfulness untethered to genre.

LA-based Canadian artist Jessy Lanza has brought dance and pop music together and elevated both art forms in the process. At the heart of her work are her own sensual vocals. They bring human warmth and emotion to vibrant and uptempo grooves and result in music that is both energetic and accessible yet personal and honest. Next to critically acclaimed studio albums for Hyperdub, she has made a fine entry into the DJ-kicks mix series and toured solo from Asia to Australia. Europe to North America. Her latest album is her broadcast and boldest yet - Love Hallucination features work from producers such as Pearson Sound, Jacques Greene, Tensnake, Paul White, and Jeremy Greenspan and conforms Lanza to be out in a class of her own. 

Lanza brings her feel-good vibes to the podcast series this week, not least with a couple of her own exclusive new cuts as well as one mysterious known gem early on. They add up to a perfect representation of her sound - the first half is a feel-good mix of retro-future boogie, glossy 80s r&b, party-starting funk bombs and many more irresistible moments of pure heat from Brenda and The Big Dudes, Debbe and The Code and Gino Soccio. Things then turn more towards the dance floor with deep house from Frankie Knuckles, bass-heavy rhythms from Addison Groove and a piano banger from Mall Grab. It's just the sort of happy, sunny mix you will be coming back to all summer long.

Jeffrey Sfire’s introduction to the underground dance scene and illegal warehouse parties of Detroit occurred at the tender age of 15. This escape from suburba led him to some of the city’s most talented DJs and musicians, who soon exposed him to a new culture of creative riches. Learning by example, Sfire’s taste and skills as a DJ developed naturally and he soon began playing out at parties, clubs and sleazy gay afterhours, usually entering covertly through back doors or with a fake ID.  A move to Chicago exposed Sfire to a whole other side of dance music history, including "Italo Disco" and genre jumping dj styles of the Hotmix 5 radio djs. He spent afternoons digging through record store crates, meeting retired DJs and developing his musical palette. Having held numerous club residencies, he regularly plays at Cocktail D’amore and Panorama Bar in Berlin, The Carry Nation and Wrecked in New York, Hard French in San Francisco, Honcho events, and his own party Club Toilet and Loosen Up in Detroit, consistently offering a finely-tuned selection of Acid House, Italo Disco, Latin Freestyle, & 90’s NYC House. In 2013 Jeffrey and SOPHIE released the first untitled “Sfire” record on Cocktail d'Amore Music out of Berlin which has become a cult classic. Since then the duo has released 3 more untitled “Sfire” records. He is currently living in Detroit and is one half of the Italo/Electro duo Looky Looky with Ian Clark released on Dark Entries records of San Francisco.

People in Los Angeles usually remember the moment they first saw Colored Craig DJ. He cuts a memorable figure: throwing down records on the turntables and dancing like he's in the crowd, not behind the decks. He's one of those rare selectors who's almost as fun to watch as he is to listen. But the rest of the world should be listening. Over the past few years, Colored Craig has become one of the LA area's most in-demand DJs, not just because of his considerable skills, but because of his old-school, loved-up ethos. He plays classic house records with a verve and style that you can't really teach or learn. You just have to have it.

A choreographer by trade, everything about Craig has to do with movement, the joy of it, the energy you both gain and lose through dancing. His RA Podcast, recorded in his living room (a sort of nightclub in itself) gets across the infectious, uplifting energy of his sets, blazing through tracks from Kerri Chandler, Masters At Work and Chez Damier, and even including a disco house track that samples the Price Is Right theme. You might call this sound nostalgic, but it doesn't feel that way coming from Colored Craig, who is obsessed with the now, and the power of the moment. That outlook is all over this mix, and with any luck, you'll be hearing and watching him DJ around the world outside of LA sometime soon.

In this live talk with Tama Sumo, Lakuti and musclecars, the New York legend sets the record straight.

DJ, producer and remixer Yvonne Turner was one of the only women instrumental in shaping New York's early house scene, yet her story has gone largely undocumented. Born in Harlem in 1953, she started DJing regularly by the late '70s, playing weekly parties in Flatbush and getting her musical education at The Loft. There, she says, she learned how "good music" should sound. It inspired her to start going to the studio and sharing her musical revelations with other people.

As a woman producer, she was often relegated to the small print on records, bumped to associate or co-producer status or marked as a mixer instead of a remixer. Many of the male vocalists she worked with got credit for the music. But Turner penned some acclaimed house tracks, such as "Set Fire To Me," "Music Is The Answer" and the official remix of Whitney Houston's "I'm Your Baby Tonight." While Turner took a back seat for a few years, deciding to teach in elementary schools and wind down her touring, she recently got back in the studio and wants to set the record straight about the history of house and her place—and many other women's—within it.

Nestled between Baltimore and Washington, DC in PG (Prince George’s) County, Maryland shaped life for artist Baronhawk Poitier. Spending the bulk of his youth sorting through records and other music memorabilia at The Record Exchange in Silver Spring, Maryland, exposed him to decades of music which heavily influenced his pursuit of a career in DJing and production. As a solo artist, he's played before Vanessa Williams, Nicky Siano, Grandmaster Flash, Slick Rick, DJ Spinna, Dubtribe Soundsystem, Metro Area, Disclosure, Claude Vonstroke, Oscar G, Chromeo Karizma/ Kaytronik and local DC legend Sam “The Man” Burns. The DMC DJ competition and turntablist event has featured him during several of the DC regional battles as one of their party-rocking favs. Poitier was recognized alongside mentor and teacher Kris Klayton aka Karizma/ Kaytronik with a grant from the Maryland Historic Trust and the Maryland State Arts Council in 2015. Together they presented a Baltimore style of dance music production to the entire community through a showcase at the Maryland Folklife Festival and the release of his first EP under the direction of Karizma for R2 Records. His passion for cultural preservation and artist recognition began while working under Junious “House” Brickhouse” as a Artistic Directors and Sound Designers for the 501(c)3 non-profit organization Urban Artistry Inc., an International Culture and Education Project founded in 2005. Serving as a steward for urban dance and music culture globally presented him opportunities to headline battles and dance competitions such as: "The International Soul Society Festival" (USA), “Jam On It” (Bulgaria), "Who Can Roast The Most" (USA), "Clash CPH" (Denmark) and the USA qualifier for the "Flow Mo Anniversary (FINLAND)." 

Within LGBTQ dance music community he has earned a name for himself as a member of The NeedlExchange, a DC based, queer DJ collective with partners Bil Todd & Tommy Cornelis. Baronhawk plays an integral role building a resume for the artist group coordinating and playing events such as; Hot Mass (Honcho, Pittsburgh), Fag Bash (P Town) and opening sets for TNXDC showcases featuring The Honey Soundsystem, Sleazy McQueen, Gay Marvine, DJ Harvey, Horse Meat Disco, Kim Ann Foxman and Honey Dijon. Collectively by working through TNX and Urban Artistry, Baronhawk Poitier continues his passion for igniting dance floors into a frenzy while educating fans about cypher etiquette and culture.
