Hailing from the swamps of New Orleans, visual artist, educator, and resident It Girl, phlegm got his start DJing under the wings of New Orleans nightlife party unit Babygirl (Bouffant Bouffant and Five). His soulful and cheeky style has lit New Orleans dancefloors ablaze since he started DJing 2 years ago. His work is rooted in paying respect to Black ethos: tying together the loose ends of Black spirit, Black influence and Black inspiration into one braid. Raised in the Southern Black Baptist church, phlegm uses dance music and the dance floor as a site of release. At its core his style is an affirmation of life. So, let’s go to church.

o•rbyss aims to help soothe the queer spectrum and focus on the well-being of the community. Queer DJs are invited to submit a mix to showcase an alternative side to their music library outside of a rave and take us on a meditative journey. ✨

Notes on the mix:

“I listen to alot of ambient, jazz, shoegaze, non-dance music to soundtrack my daily life, turning my design work, long walks, bike rides, chores and meditation into a sort of cinematic beauty. These songs and albums become very personal to me for this reason. Whenever I'm asked to share this music, whether as a DJ set or as a recorded mix it becomes a loaded exchange for me. I worked on compiling this music and recording the mix the week leading up to the total eclipse in my home in Mid City New Orleans. This process proved to be very psychedelic and introspective and the result feels like an important timeline marker in this stage of my life that I will be transported back to anytime I revisit the mix. I hope that in sharing this sonic tapestry, the listener  is able to close their eyes and take a psychedelic carpet ride, a journey inward, riding the sound waves, and allowing them to evoke emotion, thought, and introspection.”

Bouffant Bouffant is a DJ, Producer, and party starter from New Orleans, Louisiana. He cut his teeth in local sex clubs, warehouses, and dive bars but has become a major player on the bubbling American Queer Underground nightlife circuit as well as International jaunts to play for the likes of Cocktail d’Amore, Buttons Berlin, Mustang Paris, and Savage Hanoi. His monthly party Gimme A Reason has been fostering space for queer nightlife in New Orleans for over 9 years and has become known for it's wild and rawkus, no rules policy. In recent years he has delved into the arena of ambient music creating mixes and DJing listening bars like Kwia Berlin.

"Soundscapes reveal a lot about how people think and behave." The field recordist and musician talks about listening culture, repatriating African sounds and his new album with The Bug.

Today's conversation moves away from the dance floor, focusing instead on the soft, ambient soundscapes of the Berlin-based musician Joseph Kamaru—AKA KMRU—whose work has been featured at festivals like CTM, Mutek, Atonal, Horst Music and Arts, Dekmantel, and Unsound; concert halls like The Barbican; and major galleries and site-specific installations around the world.

Kamaru moved to Europe from Nairobi, where he first became interested in music production, and field recordings specifically. As a graduate student in the sonic arts, he learned that the majority of the discourse around sound art practices is specific to Western Eurocentric or occidental ways of thinking. He's since embarked on a mission to use field recording as a means of repatriating African identities that are often left out of institutional archives and grapple with the legacy of colonialism.

In this RA Exchange, Kamaru reflects on the sociopolitical angle of his work, and his observation that listening, by its very nature, is never neutral. He also talks about how civilisation and technology has changed our collective listening habits; how sound sources beyond the human hearing range make their way into his work with the use of electromagnetic microphones; and his new album, Disconnect, made with the musician Kevin Richard Martin (AKA The Bug).
