Sensational Genius - Great LP @Deeptrax !!

Alex Albrecht ( @melquiadesmusic ) is a local Naarm/ Melbourne based DJ/producer & label boss, running the charming, ethereal local imprint Analogue Attic ( @analogueattic ) alongside @sean_labrooy, which showcases the gentle side of music down under. 

Between running his label, dj'ing, and solo releases under "Alex Albrecht presents Melquiades", Alex is also known for his productions alongside his co-label head, Sean La Brooy, under Albrecht La'brooy ( @albrecht-labrooy ). The musical duo have an impressive slew of releases which combine elements of electronic and classical/ jazz influenced music, with a beautiful result. The two have also run various events in Melbourne across the last decade. 

Alex showcases his solo project in his mix here, with a bunch of his own productions embedding the mix.

Animix Ninety Nine: Alex Albrecht

If we were to pick one word to describe Ziggy Devriendt, AKA Nosedrip, it would probably humble. He runs a one-man empire out of the modest Belgian coastal town of Ostend, and his STROOM label is one of the most quietly brilliant outfits in Western Europe. A mixture of obscurer-than-obscure reissues and quirky new material makes for a label as unpredictable as it is essential, and Devriendt's unusual touch is all over it—he prefers to make up his own compilations and sequences instead of just repackaging old records, for example, which explains how important curation and putting songs together is to him.

So it's not a surprise that , in addition to being a music nerd supreme, Devriendt is also a remarkably good DJ, whose ear for oddball cuts translates well into intuitively danceable music. Judging from his RA Podcast, he's had trance on the mind—the mix features flighty beats that range from CJ Bolland and Psychick Warriors Ov Gaia to new-school practitioners like J-Zbel, plus a major highlight from Peter Van Hoesen that you might remember from Marcel Fengler's Berghain 05 mix and plenty of new material from Stroom. (He's also putting out a compilation of Belgian trance, which might explain the direction of this mix.) It's a three hour-ride that varies from jaw-dropping mixing to abrupt, almost shocking transitions that might startle you out of your chair.

Closing your eyes, still not dark. A lighting rig under your lids. A night lasting 20
years, falling asleep with your favourite song on repeat. The deconstructed,
untangled memory lingers in your system. What you hear are the remnants of a
social gathering and its body movements.
KMOS. The fog machines are gone, the free deconstructed thinking laid out bare.
Fourth album. The white noise funk still here, 4 to the floor and gnarly basslines.
The jazz but the tight, the funk but the taut. The austere but the flow. The
instruments, sinuous and intricate. The deconstructed dancefloor. Sawed up bits,
sawed up pieces. The drums the strings the claps the sharpness. Rearranged,
picked apart. organized for a new day. A new idea. A new blueprint. A brave

KASSEM MOSSE NEEDS TO FEEL MIX

From New Jersey via The Netherlands: longstanding US craftsman Joey Anderson makes his debut on Deeptrax with his inspiring new album… ‘Exotic Sequence’ 

His fourth LP to date, ‘Exotic Sequence’ is a fully instrumental deep dive into both Joey’s machines and mindset, as he explains himself… “The title ‘Exotic Sequence’ stood out to me because throughout the LP I tended to use a sequencer for the main melody of most of the tracks. Almost every time I approach a track with techno intentions it eventually ends up being deep / housey,” states the artist who broke through 15 years ago on Qu’s Strength Music and has worked closely with the likes of Dekmantel and, more recently, Avenue 66.  

Now at home on the relatively new and positively thriving label arm of Dutch record store institution Deeptrax, Joey tells us where he’s at with a body of work that poignantly reminds us that it’s not the destination that counts; it’s the journey we endure to get there.

In this sense, ‘Exotic Sequence’ is the sound of Joey letting his instruments guide, inform and inspire him. Cuts like the constantly rising and hopeful ‘Sky Children’, the deep 808 bubbles and dreamy reflections of ‘Behind The Valley’ and the emotionally rich ‘Stop’ are just a handful of examples of  Joey being lost in deep flow, channeling the creative energy in his studio. 

It lands exactly three years after his last album ‘Rainbow Doll’, neatly bookending the strangest and most surreal start to any decade we’ve lived through since house and techno culture took root in the 80s. A timeless document that looks forward and back and remains unhurried, thoughtful and crafted with longevity, ‘Exotic Sequence’ is arguably the most honest and frank side to Joey Anderson we’ve heard in his extensive career so far.

40 mixes in and the Off The Record series has seen a wide spanning in range of artists and styles. Its dug deep into DJ's record bags and has let us hear some of their holiest gems. Our 40th mix comes from one of the most solid selectors Amsterdam has to offer; Olf van Elden aka Interstellar Funk. 
Having started off working at the Dutch institution that is Rush Hour Records as a label manager and playing sets year in and year out at the monumental Dekmantel, Interstellar Funk has taken himself worldwide as well as releasing records on labels like L.I.E.S, Berceuse Heroique, Rush Hour, Dekmantel along with his own Artificial Dance label. A label he has run with a keen ear since 2017 releasing artists like Genetic Factor, June, Black Merlin and more. 
For Off The Record 40 Interstellar Funk takes us in the realms of home and club listening with a well crafted mix that builds and warms us into the floor beautifully. We had a chat with the artist about the mix and about what he has going on:
