A Toad Or A Dove

The Chlorines debut studio album Inhabitants is a concept album by singer-songwriter Owen de Marchi. Inhabitant alludes to the many dwellers that find a home in the body, soul and mind and the album is homage to the constant power struggle between these dwellers.

All the occupiers have their say in the album; some desirable, some less desirable and some downright savage and in doing so, Inhabitants asks the listener to walk a mile in the shoes of someone who is endlessly required to self-audit, it asks the listener to imagine a world where you constantly walk a tight rope between virtuousness and demonicness.

The album is the sound of a morphing soul caught on tape. It encapsulates a place in time where you are forced to square up to your demons by either negotiating a treaty, saving goodbye or accepting their tenure. It’s a violent and fragile, dynamic and raw tale of one man’s struggle with mental illness; a vulnerable, honest and confessional account of coming to terms with who you are, who you want to be and who you will never be. This expedition sways from peaceful resolution, crazed desperation to misfit pride and everything in-between.

The album’s thesis is echoed by a defiant wasteland of guitar, slide and percussion that sits somewhere between neo-folk, post punk and space rock. The voyage and concept of Inhabitants is driven home by the lineage placement of the tracks, the linkage of words and musical cycles as well as the carefully selected accompanying visual representations.

True to the concept and album’s vetting form, it was recorded over a two year period at Tony City and JellySound. It was mixed, mastered and engineered by Michael Jelinek.

Inhabitants features Owen de Marchi on vox and guitar, Brayden Edwards on guitar, Re Ne on slide, Tom Higgins on bass and Tom Freeman on percussion.

Dirty, wordy folk adulterated with garage and indie with an occasional hat-tip to blues and Australiana. Deep West is the solo project of Brayden Edwards (with a little help from his friends). Brayden is a multi-instrumentalist and plays in Perth acts The Chlorines, Rich Widow and Trails End.
