Roladex nostalgically borrows ideas from music of the past to carefully craft a unique brand of futuristic-mechanized pop, with an emphasis on songwriting and layered production. Weaving sparse, sequenced arpeggios into fuzzy bass and bubbly melodies to create a bed of sound where they layout a somehow bright melancholia. Part minimal synth-wave, part dream pop. procesS: i used a sort of scramble technique i often use for remixes that works quite well toward making something uniquely different than the original source track, also useful trick if you have no stems to work with...
tO start with, figure out the BPMs you're going to be working with (and rhythm/timing if different than the usual 4/4.  thiS will be important when you start making edits later.  iN this case "Drive" was in a shuffle rhythm so I made all my cuts on triplets, which worked well to preserve that rhythm, but it's not necessary).  theN start by applying different effects of your choosing to the master track, flange, wah, chorus, resonator, whatever you want.  dO that about three different times until you have at least three effected master tracks, plus the original.  exporT/mix down the effected tracks.  brinG them back into your DAW, onto their own tracks, dry this time.  noW you can begin making random edits/cuts to make segments of various sizes (ranging from 16th notes to half notes) anywhere you like on any of the four tracks.  theN start dragging random segments of any of the four tracks to an empty track where you string them together in a sequence.  dO this as long as you like, then start listening to the crazy sequence for possible loops.  tiP: use the loop function to try out different parts of the sequence to see if a particular part works rhythmically when repeated.  yoU should hopefully end up with several loops you can use to piece together a song or just have a unique break in a more traditional remix.  happY scrambling!
