Release note:
This record is named after Vedanta, an ancient philosophy based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India. The music, originally composed and produced by Joseph S Joyce and later remixed by Sebastian Mullaert of Minilogue, was greatly inspired, after reading commentaries from Swami Rama Tirtha's biography "The Scientist & Mahatma" - Chapter 1 - Vedanta and The Secret of Success. In the book he states:

"Vedanta requires you to work for its own sake. In order that your work should be successful, you should not mind the end or care for the consequences or the result. Part 2 of the ‘Drifting…’ trilogy of releases, ‘Keys For A Drifting Rose EP’ is the fourth release on Codename: RCRDS, the new label from Southampton-based jungle, 160 and atmospheric crew Codename: Amen. 

Keys For A Drifting Rose commences with ‘The One’ by the atmos master Okee, a dreamy inward looking roller for the ages, alternating haunting vocals perfectly capturing feelings of post-rave isolation. Man of the moment Mineral returns to the label with ‘Shallow’, contrasting chopped breaks, atmospheric tones and deep rumbling basses in a beautiful example of his truly unique sound.

Next up we find the prolific NonRev in commanding form, with the mysterious and powerful roller ‘Private Eye’, perfectly primed to get dancefloors moving with it’s rumbling basslines, intricate drum edits and catchy vocals, before the EP closes with Bottoni's fascinating reworking of ‘Shallow’, where a half-time rhythm is interspersed with the breakbeat choppage and atmospherics of Mineral’s original, clearly demonstrating the talents of this unique and talent artist.

Broma - Joggle

After dropping two stunning tracks in 2023, Donegal’s Microcosm makes his full label debut with our first release of 2024 – ‘Labyrinth EP’.

The EP commences with the title track ‘Labyrinth’, where dreamy pads and synths give way to its appropriately labyrinthine amens for a tearing opener. Things continue with ‘Inferno’, a 93-influenced dancefloor workout full of chopped breaks, warped bass, dark stabs and dub influences. In contrast to its name, ‘Pandemonium’ offers a little respite, with rolling breaks and deep pads locking you into a groove, before the EP closes with label co-owner Moakz’s rework of ‘Inferno’ – upping the tempo a little and adding intricately edit drums and subtle new atmospherics to the original track for a rousing finale to the release.

I’ve been a long-time admirer and fan of Mighty Moe, going all the way back to the mid-90s and the early days of Heartless Crew. We all went to the same sixth form—Islington Sixth Form College—and although we didn’t know each other at the time, I was often in the crowd at North London house parties where they were learning their craft.

Mighty Moe has always brought a positive, uplifting energy on the mic. Any party he performed at was guaranteed to be full of vibes. From those 90s house parties, to his iconic 2011 Sidewinder set with DJ EZ, to his recent 2024 appearance on DJ AG’s London livestream—the energy has always been top-tier, and the crowd participation infectious (cue the “we got the vibes, yo” lyric). Even now, listening back to those sets as I write this, I’m grinning from ear to ear.

Though best known for garage, Mighty Moe has always been a jungle lover. His roots trace back to 90s pirate radio, with London’s legendary stations like Mission 90.6, Freek FM 101.8, and Y2K 90.6, before moving on to BBC 1Xtra and gaining a MOBO nomination in the 2000s.

Fast forward 30 years, and I’m in the studio experimenting with clean, modern jungle—crisp breaks, a vibey bassline, simple and direct. I came across a Mighty Moe acapella, bursting with the energy and clarity I’ve always loved about his style. I dropped it over the beat, and it just clicked. I finished the track, sent it to him—he loved it and gave it his blessing. I’ve been playing it out, and the response has been incredible. I knew I had to do something with it.

Thinking about how to release it, I liked the idea of nodding back to sound system culture and the 90s UK Garage tradition of having a vocal with a dub version on the flip. Not just an instrumental, but a full reworking—with new drums, new bass, and a focus on weight and space. It’s a continuation of the lineage from classic King Tubby or MJ Cole dubs, reimagined in my world of modern jungle . . . Mighty Moe always with the wickedest kinda flavour!

What's Gwarnin? (Rollers Mix - Edit)

After a brief pause Codename: RCRDS return with the second part of our ‘Broken’ trilogy, bringing together a selection of newcomers to the label. Separated by geography but united by the rhythms of jungle and drumfunk, the release takes to four different corners of the genre as we move between darkness and light, playfulness and intensity over the course of the release to discover the Broken Tribes.

The EP opens with Brownsville’s breakbeat maestro Krugah, with ‘Simple Ting’ providing a stunning example of his unique and creative style. Marvel Cinema joins the fray with ‘Endless Energy’, full of frantic drum edits which provide a counterpoint to the dreamy house-inflected vocals and pads. The 2nd half of the EP moves into a darker direction with Jack Rapture’s amen choppage skills at the fore on the deep and introspective ‘Why Are We Here?’, before E.B.S. closes the release with the intense ‘Aftermath’, interspersing dark distorted bass tones and dubwise vocals with tearing amens and moody synths.

{Premiere} Rolaz - Reverse Psychology (Mathematica Records)

Default Position are happy to announce ‘The Warrior’ – a long anticipated EP from Joseph S Joyce & Atmo Paritosh; which also features a remix from a talented new Belgian producer named Daniel[i]. The original mix is a dubby dreamy sequence with many twists, slowly building in complexity before deconstructing into an almost beat-less dub soundscape. Daniel[i]'s more uptempo remix is a little more dance floor orientated whilst remaining true to the vibe and spirit of the original; making it the perfect tool for the discerning techno performer.

Atmo and Joe have been working together on tracks for a few years, after meeting at a gig in Ibiza. The pair instantly formed a connection through a shared appreciation of the deeper styles of dance music and the philosophical and spiritual tensions that go hand in hand with this genre. In the studio they were always able to enjoy focused and constructive sessions where they could be open and frank with one another, whilst quickly finding common ground and an agreed direction to take their music. This is a dynamic that can be quite rare to find.

This EP’s title ‘The Warrior’ stems from a body of psychology relating to four archetypal characteristics known as King/Queen, Warrior, Magician and Lover. The model, popularised through the modern works of Robert More, Douglas Gillete and Dr Paul Dobrowsky can be traced back to ancient Greek philosophy. The ideology has taken on many forms and interpretations over the ages. The application of this model is most prevalent today among psychoanalytic studies and therapies surrounding masculinity. Jungian psychologist Robert Moore argues that masculinity is made up of these four archetypal male energies which serve different purposes. The theories go on to suggest that each of us possess a dominant temperament. Some of us may have a particularly King or Queen like temperament; someone who oversees, protects, and governs. The lover may find themselves overwhelmed by their artistry, consumed by matters of the heart, excelling in creativity but lacking pragmatism. The magician is smart, a natural performer, always first to take to the stage. The warrior is a take charge kind of person, very logical, organised and targeted.

One of Dr Paul Dobransky’s seminars indicate that through our romantic relationships we may often attract people of opposite temperaments, which forms a subconscious process of balancing or centering of our conscious condition. A lover may find some tenacity and direction with a warrior, where as a magician may feel someone with a king or queen temperament satisfies something that they themselves are lacking. As these two temperaments spend time with one another in relationship, what they stand to gain is a more centered psychological condition. For instance, the lover may begin to absorb and incorporate traits from their warrior partner, and in turn the magician stabilises with a king or queen. The ideal of course, is to have adopted an equal measure of each of the archetypal characteristics within your nature. These ideologies suggest that it is through relationships that we can achieve this state of being, as if it were a kind of exchange of energies.

This EP focuses on inspiration drawn by the Warrior temperament, which perhaps demonstrates the most dominant of masculine energies. Exploring these kind of therapies and the story the archetypal characters can offer us some powerful explanations. The model can help us further understand the reasoning behind our individual limitations or strengths. Perhaps we can even begin to understand why some relationships may go wrong and how we can grow from them and move on.

The Warrior is released on September 28th 2015.

The label gets its name from a term that is widely used in psychology, referring to a person's natural tendency or reaction to something or someone. A person's default position is often based on deeply embedded core beliefs about themselves or the world around them, often originating from childhood. Many of us will have to challenge our default positions in life, especially if we've developed negative ones. In terms of creativity, however, we believe that the default position serves something of great value. We believe it represents an artist's fundamental frequency, a place of creative authenticity, devoid of external influences or material motive. When an artist's output comes from their default position they express their truth. Our aim is to help them deliver their message.
