Default Position welcomes Ukrainian-born DJ producer Andrey Sirotkin to the label - with his debut deep techno EP, 'Dusk'. 

As a seasoned music maker Sirotkin brings a wealth of experience, having produced several genres - from deep house and dub techno to drum and bass and dubstep under his alias I Wannabe.  

Sirotkin's latest four-track EP transports the listener into a spooky dark underworld, with its moody, acid-esque basslines, haunting pads, and mesmerising percussive melodies. 'In Ukraine, we have this trend of hard banging music', says Sirotkin. 'Some people have difficulty appreciating deeper grooves' So with 'Dusk' it was about making something that could be experienced in more spiritual ways. It's for people who are maybe not into the hard dance experience but still love electronic music.

Dusk releases on September 12, 2022. All proceeds will be donated to Red Cross Ukraine.

Giacomo Pellegrino: 
DJ, Producer and Remixer. Owner of Detroit Side Underground Vinyl-Only Records Label. Giacomo Pellegrino is part of that particular category of people that really knows very well the meaning of the word passion. He started djing when he was only fourteen. Son of a musician, following his father around to every concert, visiting the most important clubs and venues of Sicily. Thanks to that experience, he developed a true passion for music and clubbing and, later, for djing. Despite still being too young to perform at night as a DJ, Giacomo started to arrange a few shows for friends, playing sets focused on dance music from the 70’s and the 80’s, his first musical love. A few years later, his style became a “monolith” of dance and funk, house and tech. Giacomo has his hand in every aspect of the music scene.

He also founded his own record label called Detroit Side, which is dedicated to the very passionate vinyl and DJ community. A label that promotes quality over quantity in the house and techno segment.

Release note:
This record is named after Vedanta, an ancient philosophy based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India. The music, originally composed and produced by Joseph S Joyce and later remixed by Sebastian Mullaert of Minilogue, was greatly inspired, after reading commentaries from Swami Rama Tirtha's biography "The Scientist & Mahatma" - Chapter 1 - Vedanta and The Secret of Success. In the book he states:

"Vedanta requires you to work for its own sake. In order that your work should be successful, you should not mind the end or care for the consequences or the result. Default Position are happy to announce ‘The Warrior’ – a long anticipated EP from Joseph S Joyce & Atmo Paritosh; which also features a remix from a talented new Belgian producer named Daniel[i]. The original mix is a dubby dreamy sequence with many twists, slowly building in complexity before deconstructing into an almost beat-less dub soundscape. Daniel[i]'s more uptempo remix is a little more dance floor orientated whilst remaining true to the vibe and spirit of the original; making it the perfect tool for the discerning techno performer.

Atmo and Joe have been working together on tracks for a few years, after meeting at a gig in Ibiza. The pair instantly formed a connection through a shared appreciation of the deeper styles of dance music and the philosophical and spiritual tensions that go hand in hand with this genre. In the studio they were always able to enjoy focused and constructive sessions where they could be open and frank with one another, whilst quickly finding common ground and an agreed direction to take their music. This is a dynamic that can be quite rare to find.

This EP’s title ‘The Warrior’ stems from a body of psychology relating to four archetypal characteristics known as King/Queen, Warrior, Magician and Lover. The model, popularised through the modern works of Robert More, Douglas Gillete and Dr Paul Dobrowsky can be traced back to ancient Greek philosophy. The ideology has taken on many forms and interpretations over the ages. The application of this model is most prevalent today among psychoanalytic studies and therapies surrounding masculinity. Jungian psychologist Robert Moore argues that masculinity is made up of these four archetypal male energies which serve different purposes. The theories go on to suggest that each of us possess a dominant temperament. Some of us may have a particularly King or Queen like temperament; someone who oversees, protects, and governs. The lover may find themselves overwhelmed by their artistry, consumed by matters of the heart, excelling in creativity but lacking pragmatism. The magician is smart, a natural performer, always first to take to the stage. The warrior is a take charge kind of person, very logical, organised and targeted.

One of Dr Paul Dobransky’s seminars indicate that through our romantic relationships we may often attract people of opposite temperaments, which forms a subconscious process of balancing or centering of our conscious condition. A lover may find some tenacity and direction with a warrior, where as a magician may feel someone with a king or queen temperament satisfies something that they themselves are lacking. As these two temperaments spend time with one another in relationship, what they stand to gain is a more centered psychological condition. For instance, the lover may begin to absorb and incorporate traits from their warrior partner, and in turn the magician stabilises with a king or queen. The ideal of course, is to have adopted an equal measure of each of the archetypal characteristics within your nature. These ideologies suggest that it is through relationships that we can achieve this state of being, as if it were a kind of exchange of energies.

This EP focuses on inspiration drawn by the Warrior temperament, which perhaps demonstrates the most dominant of masculine energies. Exploring these kind of therapies and the story the archetypal characters can offer us some powerful explanations. The model can help us further understand the reasoning behind our individual limitations or strengths. Perhaps we can even begin to understand why some relationships may go wrong and how we can grow from them and move on.

The Warrior is released on September 28th 2015.

Default Position is a London/Berlin-based record label founded by Joseph S Joyce which specialises in emotive forms of electronic music. The label gets its name from a term that is widely used in psychology, referring to a person's natural tendency or reaction to something or someone. A person's default position is often based on deeply embedded core beliefs about themselves or the world around them, often originating from childhood. Many of us will have to challenge our default positions in life, especially if we've developed negative ones. In terms of creativity, however, we believe that the default position serves something of great value. We believe it represents an artist's fundamental frequency, a place of creative authenticity, devoid of external influences or material motive.
