The Ukrainian artist has become quite known around the city due to his work as a light designer and his respective light performances for various renowned events such as the ICKPA festival. Andreas Baumecker launched his DJ career in the early 90s, a Frankfurt native coming of age in the halcyon days of his country’s reunification. His first stop was the city’s storied and centrally located Romantica, then its affiliate Intimbar where reps from house label Playhouse picked him up for buying duties at record store Delirium. After an uptick in local bookings, he made a brief stop in Mannheim for more of the same before moving to Berlin in 2004, where a recently opened Panorama Bar scouted him as resident and offered him the role of in-house booker for its Berghain operations. As word got out and the city started to draw larger crowds he became a fundamental force in crafting the club’s story. Hesitant to define the upstairs-downstairs split as house and techno, he practices his preachings through an approach that embraces a range of different sounds. ‘Surprise is important’ and his 25,000 strong vinyl collection lends a hand in the process, an assemblage that oscillates between disco, house, electro, techno, breakbeat and pop; the key is to capture the spirit of a crowd. This strategy has borne not only his label Freundinnen (put on hiatus in 2007, relaunched in 2023), but a lasting collaboration with sparring partner Sam Barker as half or Barker and Baumecker (four 12” records and two albums on his alma mater’s imprint Ostgut Ton to prove it). nd_baumecker deals in all things funky and uplifting, a thread of life-affirming melodies and historically literate beats that drive seamlessly forward. Bassiani Podcast 255 alludes to his well stocked portfolio of references, with hints of disco and balearic house, it's more of what his fans know and love to usher in the warmer months; this latest episode is full of spacey tenor, refreshing and gently rolling, breezy chill-out expertly compiled by this fabled German veteran.

Bassiani invites nd_baumecker / Podcast #255

For this next number comes Amsterdam-based DJ/Producer Grace Dahl, a top-notch talent with a techno heritage. Some of her early years were spent listening to her dad spin records in Spain (the place her rave-loving Hungarian father and Finnish mother then called home), a teasing precursor to subsequent chapters in her tale. A later date saw her move to the Dutch capital: here at 18, she started playing local venues, refining her method and catching the eye of stalwart party series Vault Sessions, where she took up a high-octane residency. In the decade since the pieces have really fallen into place: she’s played Berghain, Awakenings, Boiler Room and a notorious b2b set with her dad at Amsterdam’s Basis. She’s also released her debut EP Dark Side of Desire and a number of follow ups on labels like Amelie Lens’ EXHALE and Frenzy Recordings. Moving forward to the speed of her productions, her very own imprint SDT (Serial Disc Touchers) saw daylight in 2024, a channel for her unfolding prophecy, featuring familiar names like François X and Julian Müller. And it’s a good one. Her sound skims across hard groove and traditional techno, rolling bouts of rhythm and sound that offer a palette you have to feel in the gut. It’s hypnotic, powerful, frenzied stuff, a cavalcade of masterful beats that won’t slow down for a soul. For Bassiani Podcast 256, Dahl brings every one of her razor sharp wits to the table and delivers an hour long blend of staggering scale, pure-blood techno made to measure from her studio base.

Behind the decks, Kancheli is capable of conjuring up the kind of magic that can only come from a 10+ year residency at one of electronic music’s finest institutions, with this exceptional mix another fine example of his intricate sonic sorcery and mind-controlling incantations.
