This resembles music!  I love how randomness is not such a stranger in art. Its there more than we think sometimes. Our ears and brains do the heavy lifting.

The 600th Disquiet Junto challenge.
This week a shared sample pool challenge. The track is based on 7 wonderful samples provided by Marcus Fischer.

I started off the process with the intention of using only the Elektron Octatrack but quickly ran out of memory trying to load all of the long samples into Flex machines. The parts I did create as still present in the track, particularly a sliced and randomised section you can hear primarily near the end.
Restarting the process in Bitwig I decided to create a few of the tonal drones by playing the percussive sample (which also introduces the track and ends it in dry form) through a tuned comb filter and into a Convolution device with one of the 45 second long tonal samples loaded as the Impulse Response. As a result the transients in the sample strike the impulse response and excite the chord elements. Another of the tonal samples is loaded in a Sampler in granular mode, stretch set arbitrarily slower and 3 voices playing back spaced out sections of the sample. The length of the track (I know, I'm sorry) was set purely by waiting until one long held note on the sampler had fully played through the stretched sample.
From there one of the other samples was cut up and pitched down an octave to produce the slightly glitchy bass line. Other parts from the remaining samples added where I felt they worked in the arrangement.
All parts are created using only the samples.
One additional sample added in the background - a field recording of kids playing.

From Steam To Source (disquiet0601)

Using an old Norns loop as a drone base, I prepared for a session with Lucid Grain; so I added seven types of sounds - piano, bells, noises, voice and strings, etc –  which only play one or two notes at random. 

I didn’t have an idea how to introduce these blocks of sounds until this week’s prompt came. So I threw out the seventh part, numbered the sound blocks accordingly, and every 45 seconds, there’s a new part added according to the order I rolled.

Disquiet Junto Project 0601: Hard Six
The Assignment: Let a roll of the dice determine the relative prominence of various parts of a track.

The project was inspired in part by recent correspondence with Junto participant Robert Precht. More to come in that regard. 

Step 1: Choose six brief segments of sound that you have recently recorded. Or record some new segments now. Either way, select six of them, and label them one through six.

Step 2: Roll a single die for each of the six segments chosen in Step 1.

Step 3: The result of each roll in Step 2 represents the relative presence of that given segment in a finished piece of music. Think about how the pieces might relate to each other. This idea of relative presence can mean whatever you want: frequency of appearance, relative volume, intelligibility etc.

Step 4: Record a piece of music in which the relative presence of the segments chosen in Step 1 correlate with the results from Step 2.

This is an experimental track based on the soundscape https://soundcloud.com/rabmusiclab/aankomst-amsterdam-zuid. 
In this original track a field-recording from an IC-train has been used as base and was transformed to a special soundscape.
Following the Disquiet Junto Project 0601 (details see below) six short sections were cut out of this source and rearranged to a new track, the number of overall repetitions of the different sections determined by throwing a dice.

I made it difficult for myself and selected 6 unrelated eurorack improvs. And to make it even harder, the dice showed 4-3-4-2-4-2, which meant I had to use all of them a lot. I think the result is a hot mess, but at least it resembles music. And that is good enough for me.

Disquiet Junto Project 0602: Choice Words
The Assignment: Make a piece of music that strives to express a specific word.

Step 1: Choose a word — either a favorite word, or one at random from a dictionary, a book your reading, or any such source.

Step 2: Compose a short piece of music that expresses that word as best you can. Perhaps it communicates an underlying concept, or follows the shape of the word when spoken, or utilizes it as an extremely short lyric. Come up with your own approach, which might be determined by the word, rather than imposed on the word.

I used an online random word generator and got the word: torch.
I thought of an old style wooden torch that would burn very brightly before slowly going out and tried to express that with this short track. Hope you like it! Have a good day.

I went for a bike ride and recorded the ambient sounds with a mini recorder. Subsequently I took several samples at different speeds and mixed them via 'csound' at different speeds even in reverse. First time using ambient sounds to make a piece.
