pigeons is the culmination of a year of learning and working, inspired by a new city and it's transient denizens, human or otherwise. A love letter to instrumental hiphop and the art of sampling and an embrace of specificity. Guided by that which moves them, def has distilled their sound into ten tracks designed to instil solace and spark joy and dreams of escape to inhabitants of the urban sprawl.

Recorded in the first half of 2023, 'only built 4 spaces' is a distillation of def's dark and cinematic approach to abstract instrumental hiphop. Punchy beats, combined with eery samples, melodic basslines and icy synths. with interludes of delicate piano, enveloping electronics and lacanian psychoanalysis, this project represents a passion for classic hiphop sounds filtered through obsessions with the more obscure corners of the information era. Embracing such diverse influences as Mach-Hommy, yeule, mayaewk and Number Girl to name but a few, the project is a concise journey through a gritty hiphop sound, tinged with lofi, dark ambient, jazz, post-hardcore and electronica.
