Nastya is a living example of how boundless love for music leads to djing, and then with edit-making and the first own vinyl record! We adore Nastya for her hand-picked sensual selection and rare Soviet and post-Soviet musical finds, we have played her tracks countless times, so we are very glad to see her contribution to the series!

My grandfather was born in the small village of Bilovod in the north-east of Ukraine, survived the war and occupation as a child, until the age of 18, my grandfather did not even speak Russian. After school, he went 1000 kilometers to the other part of the country to the city of Kaliningrad, where he graduated from the maritime school and forever connected his life with the sea and with this city. There he met my grandmother, later my mother was born, and then I was born. For 40 years, my grandfather worked as a radio operator in the merchant navy and, it seems, during this time he visited almost all countries of the world, he was bitten by a shark on his leg, he lost several fingers from frostbite, got into a storm hundreds of times, lost consciousness from an electric shock. My grandfather had many such stories about his great marine life. Grandfather spent most of the year at sea and only a few months on land, where my grandmother and mother were always waiting for him at home. He always brought gifts and sweets from abroad. And in his spare time from the sea, he was engaged in his favorite radio electronics, went to a beer bar with colleagues and, of course, to the stadium to see FC Baltika. Football was his passion, my grandfather watched football all the time. For a long time it was our tradition, on Saturday or Sunday we sat down with him at the TV and watched 5-6 matches that went on that day, but most of all grandfather loved to watch English football.

Last year, due to complications caused by a coronavirus, my grandfather passed away. We were very close with him, he was with me all my childhood and youth. It was not an easy decision for me, I had been hatching this idea for almost a year, but I thought it would be right. I dedicate this musical story to my grandfather. Of course, this is not the music he was listening to. In general, as long as I remember him, he listened more to talk shows on Radio Mayak and read a lot of books. Inside is a musical story about death, about love, about hope, about waiting, about sadness and joy. Inside, all that I can associate with my grandfather, there are songs from Russia, Ukraine, and Lithuania, the sea and the Kaliningrad port, FC Baltika.

With awe and inspiration, we are presenting to you the first mix of this year! This is a recording from Mikel Acosta, who runs the Hegoa Records label ('Angel' - in the Basque language), which carefully re-releases the original music of the Basque Country. Whose people's autonomy, including cultural autonomy, has long been suppressed by the policy of Spain, especially during the Franco regime.

I truly admire Mikel's work! With great love for the culture of his people and his origins, he introduces the listener to the previously concealed experimental, jazz and ambient music, which is deeply rooted in national folklore.

For De Kat Memwa, Mikel recorded the perfect hour-long meditative winter mix for introspection, walking, contemplating nature or reading!

In the realm of De Kat Memwa series, the musical milieu has undergone a remarkable transformation since 2018. The rare beats and curious chords have evolved into a more intricate and sophisticated soundscape, intent on stimulating an array of emotions and cognitive responses, from tranquil reveries to incisive musings.

Despite these changes, one aspect remains constant: the meticulous curation of guests. Each selector invited to join the series represents a fount of inspiration, overflowing with boundless talent and expertise, all of which I deeply admire and hold in the highest esteem.

So I'm extremely happy that today we have a guest mix recorded by Frank from Berlin. A man of many guises and talents. You may know him as Frans Æmbient or A Method To Exist. In our series, unveils his latest sonic endeavour T.V.S.T. (TV IS TERRIBLE) project in which he constructs a hauntological reality with pearls from the scrapyard. 

Frank is also the visionary mastermind behind the experimental label and mix series Kashual Plastik, a cherished haven for adventurous researchers, outsiders and mavericks alike. 

Moreover, he curates the musical palette at the Arkaoda Berlin, one of the world's most daring and multidimensional venues.

De Kat Memwa as a mix series was created with the intention of promoting a diverse range of genres and bringing together selectors who are not entertaining but inspire and surprise the curious listener. Issue 49, which features the recordings of Sallad Egg, is a perfect example of this ethos. In my sonic paradigm, Sallad Egg is a true DJ's DJ, whose tracks transport me to a different musical universe I have never been to before. Additionally, in my opinion, Sally's background as a trained artist working with different materials allows her to create truly unique musical soundscapes.

It's worth noting that I typically become acquainted with the selectors who contribute to the series through the Internet and sometimes meet them in person later on. However, my experience with Sally was completely the opposite! I had the pleasure of meeting her in person in February 2020, thanks to our mutual friend and the talented Welsh musician and young father, Daf aka @zetazetamusic!

Episode 51 arrived by KLM priority delivery direct from Schiphol. We are very happy to host a mix handpicked by Amsterdamse very own selector Jouko Peters - a long-term affiliado of the Red Light Radio & Records family, current resident of Echobox Radio (Amsterdam) and Mutant Radio (Tbilisi) where he masterfully curates 2 monthly shows Circus Underwater and Inner Overtones respectively.

Over the long haul watching from a distance, I've been amazed by Jouko's productivity and his ability to manage monthly shows as well as to record plenty of guest airs and mixes in which the quality of the material ranges from good to great without being mediocre.

This mix, by my standards, was recorded in an unrealistically short time (1 day), which only made me even more amazed at the skill of Jouko and experience admiration and respect for him.

Inside, you'll find an 89-minute guided tour of a variety of genres: jazz, ambient, raga, dub and more, all put together so skillfully and exquisitely.

Episode number 52 is "hard-boiled" by an outstanding artist from the medieval city of Utrecht -  Tala Drum Corps. Being a creator in the field of audio and interaction design Tijmen combines many musical incarnations, including but not limited to his own tape experiments and the building of dub sirens and curation of Stranded FM. In his music and mixes, he gravitates more towards a chthonic palette including spooky dub, captivating and otherworldly percussions, mumblecore illbient, hypnotizing mermaid trance, mnemonic electro, Arrakis kraut and who knows what else! This mix was no exception, which makes me very happy as the curator of De Kat Memwa series! After listening to the mix for the first time, I was naturally sweating from the buzz!

I have been a long-time fan of the work of Tala Drum Corps, but for some reason, I was too shy to write for some time. When I finally overcame my shyness, we were very quickly able to meet in real life and hold an amazing joint dance event in Malmö. In short, it is a great happiness to find new friends and like-minded people through music!

Embarking on the new calendar season of De Kat Memwa with a guest I've been eagerly anticipating. There's always been an imaginary roster of creators in my mind that I'd be thrilled to host in the series. Vienna-based artist Andrea Ida has long been on this list, but somehow, due to my own negligence, I couldn't get in touch with her. Finally, I managed to correct this glaring mistake.

I recall stumbling upon Andrea's mixes somewhere around 2019, and I was absolutely mesmerized. Nearly every corner of the sonic internet space was filled with tropical sounds, which we were also cultivating at that time. However, Andrea stood out among music enthusiasts with her love for krautrock, punk, NDW, and other dark arts and matters.

I deeply admire individuals with diverse musical interests who can showcase a wide array of genres in their mixes, while evoking a specific emotion or association. Andrea is precisely one of those musical weavers. Her mixes are comprised of different nodes and intertwinings that form a unified masterpiece.

For me, her works are always about active listening, surprise, inspiration, and most importantly, immersion in sound, transitioning from one state to another, and also about charisma and daily protest against routines. And this unique release, recorded by Andrea specifically for De Kat Memwa, is no exception.

As I was crafting this text, I wanted to encapsulate the impression of listening to the mix in the form of a metaphor. Perhaps it was obvious to write something about an esoteric shamanic ritual.... But not today... 

For me, this mix is akin to riding on Falcor the Luck Dragon from the movie The NeverEnding Story, only you're not a teenager anymore, but an adult!

As with every edition of De Kat Memwa, this one is special and eagerly awaited! This time, we are honoured to host the talented artist from Montreal - Bunzinelli!

Peter captured my attention around 5-6 years ago with his exquisite series of mixes, Chambre Noire, and the eponymous radio show on n10.as. In these, Peter and his guests explored a lunar palette of genres and unconventional dance music. This organically evolved into the Chambre Noire label with a unique agenda encompassing dub-not-dub, trance, post-punk, tribal, and everything in between.

A similar description can be applied to Peter's multifaceted solo project, where he delves into leftfield dance music infused with dub and percussive elements.

For De Kat Memwa, Peter has crafted a captivating one-hour mix featuring downer guitar spoken-word, psychedelic chuggers, ethereal downtempo CD-pop, frantic drum machines, otherworldly folk, and various other curiosities from beyond.

We are incredibly fortunate to have Bunzinelli's mix, especially considering he has been busy curating a series of mixes and managing his label in recent years, alongside working on his own music! I am thrilled he found the time to create a mix for De Kat Memwa!

Starting the new week with a fresh mix! This time, we have a special guest: the distinguished selector and drummer from the post-jazz band Disturbo Fresco Puttanesco Solari - Ijf Boullet from Ostend. This coastal resort town in Belgium gained fame beyond its borders in the 20th century through the macabre visuals of James Ensor and as the brief refuge of Marvin Gaye. In the 21st century, it became the headquarters for STROOM, the beloved label for loners who build their identities around obscure music.

I discovered Ijf through his work as a researcher and compiler for STROOM, for which he conducted several ethnographic expeditions to Latvia. These expeditions resulted in the release of significant works by Riga avant-gardists of the 1980s: NSRD, Ingus Baušķenieks, and the band 19 Gadi Pirms Sākuma. Ijf is also known for his expertise in "children's music." Thanks to him, STROOM featured the super catchy nursery rhyme hit Gejuich Der Auto's, where a children's choir from Vorselaar near Antwerp lists car brands.

Ijf is a resident of Kiosk Radio and hosts the post-wake-up show Morning Consort. Previously, he hosted The 4AD Archive Club, where he played the best music on earth, specifically rare and genuine indie rock music from nonexistent bands.

In summary, I'm thrilled that Ijf recorded an unconventional hour-long selection showcasing his diverse musical taste. Passionate enthusiasts like him, who embody and revere music, continually inspire, sustain, and fuel the De Kat Memwa project.

I’m genuinely excited to share a new guest mix by the talented London-based artist Daniel Magee. Daniel has been a source of inspiration to us for quite some time now. About 6-7 years ago, he caught our attention with his amazing project, Lo Kindre, where he created a unique blend of dub-not-dub psychedelia, enriched with the distinct sounds of clanking drum machines.

A bit later, Daniel teamed up with Thomas Lea Clarke to launch the remarkable label, Phase Group. Every release under Phase Group, whether it’s a new track, a series of mixes, or their residency on Glaswegian Clyde Built Radio, consistently amazes me and inspire. It’s truly a treasure trove for anyone with curious ears.

I also have to mention the Aibell’s Harp label, where Daniel releases his own project, Yate Surge. It’s an emotional journey through blurry drone no wave with a rich variety of textures that really stands out.

For De Kat Memwa, Daniel recorded a sophisticated and touching mix, perfect for an evening stroll, reflecting on nature, or some deep journaling before bed.

I’m thrilled to host Daniel and this beautiful mix. It resonates deeply with my current mood and world perception and represents a new stage in the De Kat Memwa mix series.

A new episode in the series features a very special guest—Tim, aka caapi, a driving force of Glasgow’s underground scene. Over the past few years, Tim and @lizzie-urquhart have been creating the deeply heartfelt and immersive label @somewherepress. 
Now, Tim has launched their own label called 'blush', and this mix serves as a kind of sonic palette—or mood board, if you will—that they’ve carefully curated to establish the tone and identity of the label.

Listening to Tim's mixes is always an incredibly fascinating and inspiring experience for me. They are crafted with such skill and intricacy, always full of hidden layers and depth. This mix is no exception—I listened to it several times before its release, and each time, I discovered new shades and nuances. I'm thrilled that Tim chose to present such an important and personal story in the De Kat Memwa series.

Here’s what Tim had to say about the mix:

*My intention with blush is to explore DIY, arcane and delicate sound work with a playful and personal approach.

I recorded the mix as a way to understand the sound that's been forming in my mind over many months, and it captures the mood of what I'm going for.

At the heart, it's an exploration into ambient guitar works, particularly the kind of ephemeral moments when a zoom recorder is left on and spontaneous playing merges with the environment. But there's also a playful distortion to this, tinged with the influence of obscure '90s ambient trip-hop and sample-based music.

My first tape release as blush, by ana reme, explores romantic atmospheres and dated textures and is a big influence for me also.

I'm drawn to fluttering synths through layers of hissing tape noise, ambient guitars recorded serendipitously, obscure trip-hop that never found its place, twee indie soft rock, and everything in between.

The photos are of a waterfall in Bavaria that I photographed in the summer—they felt kind of right for this mix: a bit mystical but also strange and kind of timeless.*

Prince of Gosplan (the alter-ego project behind the De Kat Memwa guestmix series) joins our own podcast with a sonic collage to explore and re-assess personal memories, emotions, events and places.
His "Passage through the blue mist" mix ties altogether classical music and jazz, melancholic poetry, Eurasian folk, spoken word and field recordings from his St. Petersburg native city. A blend of sorrow and hope: lending emotional depth while hinting at a spark of light in the darkest corners of the soul. Far from freezing you in time with cumbersome memories, this spiritual passage through the blue mist shall trace a movement from anxiety and loss toward an inner renewal.

Here are a few words from Prince of Gosplan about his mix:
"This is probably the most personal thing I’ve done under the Prince of Gosplan name. It’s a space where the imagined and the intimate blur — where I try to process memories, emotions, and places by shaping them into a kind of sonic essay. Maybe I’m overcomplicating it, and all these semiotics only make sense to me. In the end, it’s just a selection of tracks that were mixed in particular order, but the process itself feels strangely therapeutic to me. And that’s reason enough to keep doing it.
This particular mix was also shaped by impressions from reading diaries, works of autofiction, and essays — stories where protagonists face emotional challenges, yet eventually find the strength to move forward. That narrative arc resonated deeply with me. In fact, the cover of the mix features a frame from Hedgehog in the Fog by Yuri Norstein — a masterpiece that I see as a quiet meditation on getting lost, confronting inner fears, and coming out the other side altered, maybe softer, maybe stronger. Each sonic fragment in this collage carries part of that transformative journey. It flows through symbolic phases: drowning; resurrection; fragile and quiet joy; sadness and disorientation; then movement, searching, and finally rebuilding with a hope for better. And yes — blue is my favorite color. It holds sorrow and light at once, and to me, that’s where transformation begins."

The latest episode of De Kat Memwa comes from Alex Tackenberg, aka Alex from Galax—a long-time figure in the underground music landscape of the Metropolregion Rhein-Ruhr, and a steady resident in some of its most important institutions over the past decade: Acephale, dublab.de, and the ever-iconic Salon des Amateurs.

Over the years, I’ve found myself repeatedly drawn to Alex’s mixes, each carrying that distinct Köln–Düsseldorf fingerprint: raw, punky, hypnotic, fuzzy, melancholic, and always stylistically adventurous. And crucially—played as slow as possible. A true DJ’s DJ.

About a month ago, I stumbled upon a guest mix Alex recorded for LIO Press, and it pierced right through me. At this point in my life, I’m mostly inspired by sonic collages, mixes that weave storytelling with spoken word and evoke a melancholic tranquility. Naturally, I felt compelled to invite Alex to contribute to our series—his sensibility fits right in.

This mix, in particular, feels incredibly resonant. It reminds me of a nearby bird sanctuary where I often go for mental health walks—a space of stillness inside the noise, where clarity slowly returns.

Below, Alex shares a few words about the mix he called 'The Garden of My Own Space':

'For some time now I have been thinking about the coming of spring in the urban space—a confrontation between city structures and the places within them marked by trees, plants, flowers, and the sounds of an unreal nature in the town. And yet, these spaces serve as a retreat for each of us.

Virginia Astley’s From Gardens Where We Feel Secure and Emily Dickinson’s nature observations and poems formed a metaphor, a cohesiveness of my thoughts and feelings. They provided the framework to express these feelings musically.'

Mixes on this channel have become increasingly rare. I often can’t keep up with work-related and other things enough to fit everything into my schedule. Perhaps that’s one of the disadvantages of ageing for me—being busier, less spontaneous, unable to do all the things I used to with the same regularity. It means learning to choose, to prioritise—and those choices are rarely easy.

This mix was long anticipated, and maybe it, too, was ageing before being recorded.

When I thought about the theme Thomas proposed, three visual metaphors came to mind: winemaking, cheese ripening, and the ageing of a tree. All are linked to the cognitive representation that time refines things, giving them depth, texture, and a sense of character. And yet, when we tend to think about our own ageing, it might be less poetic. It’s a deeply personal process—often ambivalent, oscillating between anxiety and fear, curiosity and pride in the journey that has shaped one’s own character. 

That’s exactly how I perceived Thomas’s mix: as a reflection on that complex, intimate experience. Some tracks unsettled me; others sparked curiosity, joy, or a quiet melancholy. By the end of the mix, I felt a warm nostalgia. I’m grateful to Thomas for this multi-layered work, which I experienced through the prism of the *ageing* metaphor.

I’ve wanted to invite Thomas to the mix-series for a long time. I’m a long-time admirer of his music and very happy that we’ve come to know each other personally. I first discovered Thomas through the debut album by RAP, the group he’s part of.

When I lived in Malmö, I shared RAP Junction with my friend @herman240p, who was deeply inspired by the production. After some searching, Herman found out that Thomas, surprisingly, was living in Malmö, too—and that’s how we first connected.

To end this sentimental journey, I want to thank Thomas once again. Earlier, in May 2024, he was looking for someone to help him organise a concert in Belgium. That eventually became the starting point for the @lise.gent concert series that @tobin.verdonck and I have been running—and fittingly, Thomas played the very first show.

I often find myself saying that each episode — and each invited guest — feels special to me as the curator of this series. This time is no exception.
There are several reasons for that, the most immediate being that this is the 60th edition, recorded by Cooper Bowman and Amelia Besseny of Troth.

Like many others, I became captivated by Troth when Oak Corridor appeared in 2021. Since then, inviting them to the series felt like a quiet dream of mine. For some reason, I hesitated. It seemed — or so I believed — that they were too far away in Australia, and simply too remarkable to ever take interest in something as modest as my mix series.

Ironically, earlier this year I had the chance to help organise a Troth concert in Ghent — a collaboration between the Morс label and the @lise.gent project I run together with Tobin Verdonck.

I often question why I continue organising concerts or inviting people to record mixes, and inspiration is the only answer that consistently makes sense.
Meeting Cooper and Amelia was profoundly inspiring. Their approach to creativity struck me: after travelling thousands of kilometres from Australia, they arranged their entire tour across Europe and the UK themselves, without any commercial expectations — driven purely by the wish to share their music and to seek inspiration in new encounters and unfamiliar places. That sincerity, that grounded honesty, made a deep impression on me.

A few words about the mix: it instantly evokes the natural surroundings of Nipaluna, where Cooper and Amelia live. It carries the qualities I associate with their music — serene, lulling, quietly mysterious, touched by a gentle, luminous melancholy.

Here is what they wrote about the mix:

‘bead of rain, wisp of air, scents of calm embrace’

But also doesn’t need a title.

Made over two days of cosy rain at home following a tumultuous period. Several Japanese artists who we adore are featured, to acknowledge preparation for some Troth shows in Japan in February 2026. Motifs are repeated throughout the mix: romance, enchantment; the sounds of rain, sacral bells and whispers of air.”

We've been waiting for this day for a very, very long time! Let me present to your attention the mix from one of our favorite selectors - master Matthias Orsett. A personality of many talents - the man behind the incredible label Décalé Records (@decalerecords along with @maxxi-fischer of course), a new wave agronomist and winemaker, and an incredibly talented DJ and radio host (check outstanding Feng Shit show at LYL Radio)! "This three-hour mix is a tribute to the Roots fi Disco crew, very dear friends I have since high school. At that time they had this home-made soundsystem project I was hosting in my basement. This was all about spreading reggae music out loud and wherever possible, in the spirit of famous soundsystem like Stereo Mars or Kilimanjaro.
24/7 eBay bidding to get first jamaican presses or, even better, dubplates, the goal was to jump on everything. This was my first experience into heavy record digging. We were regularly going to Dub Station parties at Le Trabendo, in Paris, where we saw Iration Steppas, Jah Shaka, Aba-Shanti-I, among others and it's where dub got me, the body shacking front of the super strong subwoofers of those legends.
The invitation from De Kat Memwa was an opportunity for me to go back to all those nice memories and records I captured over the last decade. In the tradition of the Roots Fi Disco, I mostly focused on 70s and 80s including rubadub, dancehall and rocksteady, exploring classic reggae themes like romancing and dancing but also inequality and justice, still so curent those days. It includes superstars like Alton Ellis or Michael Prophet but also less known artists like Sheila Hylton and Ranking Ann. This is mostly a very personal selection of what I love the most in reggae. Hope you'll enjoy as much I did while preparing it!"

De Kat Memwa is a resident of Malmö-based @retreatradio with (non-)ambient show 'Deep Relief' and collaborative experimental dance music show 'Ordealia' w/ @jonteprippz 

In the beginning, in addition, to the mix series De Kat Memwa was extended as DJ's trio with the participation of @andrew-lipa & @andreykalder. All the founding members are disseminated between Sweden, Germany and the USA which makes a collective performance impossible. However, altogether we are involved in the curation and production of 'Deep Relief' show!
