What tastes better than the first gin & tonic? The second one. So we’ve once again scoured the drum & bass scene for more brand new talent to soothe your ears and entice your palate. The assembled team of exciting young talents promise to further the success of our first batch, as we continue to distill the potency of our ’Tonics’ series. 

First up are the bouncing, buoyant sounds of UK based producer Soul Method’s aptly titled ‘Throwing Shapes’ providing a welcome, high-energy introduction to the sonic selection displayed on the EP. Groovy pads and pleasing arpeggios ride a seriously satisfying drum break and woodblock. Superbly simple vocals and measured bass work will have you giving it all and shuffling with glee on the dancefloor now that clubs are finally back open. 

Newcomer Half-Life smashes it out of the park with his debut release ‘Split’ which is a little on the grittier side than its predecessor. Creepy layered pads and foreboding harmony gel atop brisk drums, resulting in a stomach lurching drop. Wobbly bass tones, grainy digital synths and a growing drone really push the momentum throughout the tune and positions Half-Life as another young name to watch over the next year. 

Bath resident Aydn takes the floor with his bubbly, uplifting debut ‘No Option’. Trickling notes from a spacey synth and vocal chops swim in reverb, backed by a rolling beat and a deceptive crescendo which boasts rousing string plucks and grumbling swathes of bass. The 2nd drop ushers in a beefy amen break and deep, swelling bass notes which splice perfectly with the existing elements. . 

Devon boy Beeson pollinates our ears with the nectar that is ‘Brown Sugar’. For a track that starts relatively calmly, it doesn’t waste any time shifting into a stuttering, hypnotic shoe thrower. The interplay between the intense acidic arpeggio, the guttural tones of low-end and the swelling strings are very easy on the ear - a pleasing first outing that is reminiscent of the old-school raves that we have been desperate to re-capture. 

Bristol bombshells Circumference continue to prove why they’re one of the most exciting duos to come out of the city in the last 24 months. Building on the accomplished and varied sound displayed on their ‘Ambivalence’ EP on Flexout last year, the orchestral enthusiasts continue to merge mind-melting synth work with unorthodox harmonic approaches and production quality beyond their years. With drums tighter than a billionaire's wallet and compositional chops that continue to turn heads - we welcome the return of this bright young pair who you’re guaranteed to see more of. 

Rising South African star Stay-C shows off her developing style with her Soulvent debut ‘Make It Complex’ which rounds out the EP and undeniably lives it up to its name. Dark, unsettling atmos and haunting synths culminate in a gnarled, growling and gritty soundscape complete with hard-hitting drums which switches up just as fast as your ear can process it. 

Come and quench your thirst for a second time, with another batch of delightfully delectable libations, available from all good stores on the 17th September.

Leeds-based five-piece AUTOBAHN follow last year’s sold out debut EP, 1., with a second 3-track 12”, out 7th July. 2. channels the same aggressive post-punk of their debut, but feels sharper, more focused in its intent. And it’s hardly surprising – the first EP was a document of the band’s first three songs. Time has afforded the chance to hone the creative process with an almost military precision: cut the excess; find the point; hammer it home.&#13;
&#13;
If that approach recalls the crack-the-whip intensity of early Greg Ginn-led Black Flag rehearsals (legend states that Ginn would have the band practice 8 hours a day, 6 days a week), then it’s fitting of the conditions in which the music was conceived. AUTOBAHN’s practice room also plays host to Leeds’ DIY hardcore/punk venue, and elements of that lifestyle have filtered into these new songs, in spirit if not aesthetic. Indeed, AUTOBAHN should not be mistaken for a hardcore band and its associated dogma. There’s too great a range of influences at play – current listening includes Chron Gen, Tubeway Army and Rowland S. Howard. This breadth of influence has informed the band from conception, but it’s never been as manifest as on 2. You can hear it on the krautrock-inspired EP closer, ‘Ulcer’, with its metronomic intensity and subtle-but-persistent synth line, and in the myriad of guitar lines that close ‘Pale Skin’. A nod must also be made here to producer Matt Peel, who the band credits for pushing their songwriting in new directions.&#13;
&#13;
A more tangible influence stems from AUTOBAHN’s frequent touring, particularly the gigs shared with label mates Girls Names and fellow Loiners, Eagulls. In fact, ‘Unhinged’ was written on the guitar of Eagulls’ member, Mark Goldworthy. You can take that shared resource as illustrative of a general psychic bond between the bands that speaks of an imagined community. Despite the generally dark thematic concerns of the music, there’s an implicit sense of hope, as AUTOBAHN’s singer, Craig, attests:&#13;

“Ulcer is an appropriate gateway to the album we’re writing - the chorus is quite twisted ('Full breath as life just decays, cut deep, no worth, not this way') - but every time I hear that outro, it always fills me with real optimism and lifts me. The song is about death anxiety, which I don't have anymore at all.“&#13;

Following on from how much we enjoyed putting out the recent Fear of Men release, we have decided to make the flexizine (a 7” flexidisc record accompanied by a 20 page zine) a quarterly fixture. With no further ado, it gives us great pleasure to introduce issue 2. The new EP from Bournemouth based 5 piece The Death of Pop. 

Made up of three brothers and two cousins, The Death of Pop produce the sort of well-polished sound you’d expect from a tight knit family unit. We have long admired their jangley shoegaze from afar, but it was only when they sent us a lovely cassette demo did we finally make acquaintance. Opening track ‘Whenever’ picks up where excellent previous single ‘Sun in my Eyes’ left off. Dueling guitars, blissful summery melodies and a magic carpet ride of fuzz and distortion.

The EP’s further four tracks are testament to The Death of Pop’s ability to consistently craft jangle pop masterpieces that engulf you in a glowing warmth, which is basically the mark of any good shoegaze band. If it doesn’t feel like turning them up really loud would defrost a bag of peas from 50 yards, they’re probably not doing it right.

As previously mentioned, the EP is set to be released on a lovely blue transparent 7” flexidisc accompanied by a 20 page magazine. The flexidisc will feature the sub-6-minute drones of track 2 Mirage and a download code for the full EP will be included with the magazine. We have elected to release music in this format as we were getting a bit frustrated with the standard 7” release and realised we could be giving you a bit more for your money.
