First off are REDS, a recently-minted East London drum-and-bass duo who we proudly offer their solo vinyl debut featuring vocals from India's Delhi Sultanate and remixes from Canada's jungle don Marcus Visionary, the inimitable Mungos Hi Fi out of Scotland, Dublin's Dirty Dubsters and one of France's dubstep legends, Von D. The bouncy original from the pair falls close to a dancehall feeling, with understated and low-mixed drums dropping away to accentuate the bounding bass rhythm and the center-stage vocal performance. The old-school jungle style of Marcus Visionary comes through strongly in his rolling remix, which revels in the rush of tumbling drums and blasts of mid-range bass. Mungos Hi Fi give this release a solid reggae re-lick with new sound clash style vocals from Delhi Sultanate and sweet choruses from longtime collaborator Begum X out of India. This particular Mungos riddim released earlier in 2013 to great acclaim featuring vocals from none other than Soom T on her "Bong Bong' anthem. The Dirty Dusters offer up a unique, Euro dancehall twist on their high energy remix. Full vocals and simple, yet, catchy grooves wind up the track in a unique style. From his rich past on labels like Argon, Black Acre, and Boka, it would be expected that Von D give an altogether more contemporary treatment, and fittingly he reduces the tempo, ups the atmospherics, and brings in brutal walls of battering bass in half-step time for the smokers in the room while leaving most of the vocals, which were so present in the other mixes, on the cutting room floor. The transformative ending to this widely-varied EP gives balance and range to the release and presents a strong debut offering for REDS and Delhi Sultanate as Liondub International continues its charge towards new territory for 2014.

A tribute to the great Jamaican Label, here is a track from the forthcoming Studio 1 mixtape on Burning Spear's classic Rocking Time

During the 1960's and 1970's Studio One played a foundational role in most of the major music movements in Jamaica. Studio One defined ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub and dancehall. Many of the timeless riddims and basslines that have become the bedrock of sound system culture originated in Studio One. 
Rocking Time by Burning Spear is one such riddim that has been cut and recut countless times. Most recently by Irie Production. Earlier cuts include Sizzla - 'got it right there', Al Campbell with 'sell out.' Not to mention the other studio one cuts, Prince Jazzbo 'Pepper Rock' & Winston Jarret 'Feat not'
I went back to the original Burning Spear's riddim. Studio One riddims is the DJ school.. so he had to go back to the 7" in order to pay respect to the foundation.

'War Dance' on Stephen Marley's Bongo Nya riddim begins with a sample of the legendary Indo-Jamaican artist Super Cat. Cat, in a conversation with Chin, gives a mystical history of how drum beats played by slaves and native Indians metaphorphed over the years into dancehall and studio riddims. Cat in his speech conflates East Indians and First Nation Indians of the Americas. The Bongo Nya riddim kicks in and provides the perfect bass for Delhi Sultanate's lyrics evoking images of a post apocalyptic Indigenous people's war dance.

War Dance (Bongo Nya)

‘Lighters Up’ is a re-lick of Major Lazer’s tune for Snoop Lion, by London based producer Tramendas. Begum X sings harmonies on the Chorus ‘today not tomorrow’ while Delhi Sultanate’s verses contain multiple references to colonial history, from the 1857 uprising in India to the killing of Colonel Gaddafi in 2011. The Gaddafi reference echoes a classic Dancehall song by Indo-Jamaican artist Super Cat released in 1984. For these lines Delhi Sultanate borrows Cat's pattern of the 1984 classic ‘Under Pressure’ where Cat pays homage to the Libyan leader and proponent of pan Africanism.

'No capitalists shall escape' opens with a sample from Chronixx, prophesizing that in the near future all youths will grow up as revolutionaries. Stephen Marley's rockstone beat kicks in over analogue dub siren sounds and we hear the sampled voice of Johnny Clarke 'No Capitalists Shall Escape in this time'. Reminding listeners of the original source of Stephen Marley's riddim. The Johnny Clarke line is taken from a dubplate he voiced for Bass Foundation Roots. Interestingly, while the original lyrics to his famous song ' None Shall Escape' do not mention the word 'capitalists' anywhere, a lesser known dub version by King Tubby exists that contains different lyrics. Clarks voice comes in only briefly in the militant dub mix of this track, yet his words are straight to the point. Instead of his usual 'none shall escape' you can clearly hear him say ' No Capitalists Shall Escape' - pointing to the existence of alternate vocal takes of this great roots classic.

As the beat kicks in Delhi Sultanate begins his verse, riddled with references to colonial history and metaphors of disease ala 'small pox blankets' and dubplate boxes full of 'black bacteria'. Johnny Clarke's voice returns once more in the break down before Begum X takes over the rest of the song with her heavy blues style delivery written by her after she spent an afternoon reading Frantz Fanon's 'Wretched of the Earth'
