It’s been a minute since we’ve had any news from Olefonken on these pages, and that’s a minute too long. The drummer, producer, synth wizard, label owner and DJ, is a constant source of new music, whether from himself, his band Hubbabubbaklubb, his DJ sets, or his label, Snorkel and even though we might not have heard much from him recently, he’s still crafting and facilitating good music. It’s like the old adage, if a tree falls in the woods and there’s no-one to hear it, does it make a sound. Yes it does and just like that you can be guaranteed, that Olefonken is tinkering on some project as I type this.

Since we last had Olefoken on these pages, he’s re-issued his classic record, Ubuntu Tutu, put out an entire LP of Hubba remixes and a host of new music from his table of Snorkel residents. We haven’t had him in the booth as often as in the past,  but in that he is still a unique presence in Oslo.

For this edition of the Jaeger mix, he takes us deep into the night, with a mix that builds on the energy of each track, as he pursues the dance floor. Those melodic strains of his own music follows enigmatic channels to other musical territories. From balearic isles to squirmy IDM and towards high energy House, Olefonken traces a unique path through his record collection.

Basel based twins Dersu and Diego Figueira have been spinning funk, house, disco and boogie across Switzerland and Europe since their teens and now converge together as Alma Negra. Coming from a musical family with strong Cape Verde roots, they soon embraced the Latin and African rhythms that are at the heart of the music they love. As dancers, drummers and latterly producers it is the foundation of what they do.

I made this mix right after Navid passed last year.  It helped me get through the initial shock and pain to listen to all his music and be reminded that he was so talented and his music so unique and diverse. It was amazing to go back though it all and think about the memories of hearing it for the first time and sharing it with him. But then it got really hard to hear his voice, it just hurt too much...

The last few months I've come back to playing his music in my sets and feeling positive that he will live on forever through his music. A year on from his passing I feel like it's time to share this mix with the world. I hope it helps all of us remember Navid and celebrate his life...

Baby Prince - Wood you be mine ?

It’s difficult to come up with fresh ideas in this strange cabin fever environment we all have right now. Most of the time I take my inspiration and my ideas from the people dancing in front of me. It’s easy that way and exciting. But tonight I had this thought, I remembered something all DJs and dancers know about. I remembered what it is like when you have had a long set or session through the night or day. Or perhaps for a few days at a festival. And then at a certain point you are playing or dancing and everyone who is there wants to be there. This is the place. This is the time. It maybe isn’t the best gig or moment in your career or life. But for that precious period of time it is just you and the people on the dance floor. You are together as one and as a DJ you can do what you want because you are united in the music. This is often a great time to drop the tempo and play the music you love and which has real feeling. I love those moments. I tried to capture them tonight stuck in a studio on my own. I hope you will take the ride with me. Big love DT x

THE DAY AFTER THE DAY AFTER AT 6AM MIX

2020 has dealt out some heavy losses to musical pioneers across the spectrum but few have contributed so much for such a prolonged period as Tony Allen. Rising to prominence as part of Fela's Egypt 70, he's credited by Kuti himself as a co-founder of afrobeat, but his work since has helped carve a singular career as a percussion polymath. 

In 2016, Napoli-via-Berlin duo Nu Guinea were granted rare access to Allen's drum recordings to rework them into an original album called Tony Allen Experiments. It makes them as familiar with his work as any and perfectly placed to curate this Praise You to one of the greatest drummers who ever lived.
