The Swindlers return and not a minute too soon as far as we’re
concerned!  The hardest working duo in house music have had a
mental couple of years playing every club and festival known to
man, having babies, seemingly buying up the entire stock of vintage
studio gear off ebay and thankfully knocking out some banging tunes
on top of all that.  Well all club bangers gratefully received here
at Freerange so with open arms and ears we’re happy to be bringing
you the Figure Of Speech EP.
Just as the non-believers think they know what to expect from these two they’ve thrown a rather large curveball and headed down a different road. Figure Of Speech wears some African influences on its sleeve with a bumping party groove punctuated by some nifty
afro beat keys stabs and just a hint of acid. Victoria’s Secret
treads more familiar Detroit Swindle territory with the boys trademark shuffling beats and larger-than-life side-chained pads bringing the drama. Finally, we have suitably titled Live At The Cosmic Carnival where we’re treated to some peaktime tribal business with rolling bass, dubbed out dancehall science and some nifty conga work. All in all, some fiyah for the dancefloor from a pair of lads who know a thing or two about how to get a room jumping.

Kapote loves the funk. And he loves Blaxploitation movies. The black underground cinema from the 70's. Kapote samples dirty talk from these movies and puts it on his bass lines. Melodic basslines with a heavy 1070 funk vibe. Bass lines that can create a sexual tension. Kapote adds a few warm, jazzy rhodes piano chords and a lot of reverbs and filtering. And the music rolls. Often more like a jam then like a constructed piece of music. In the highest points this music is pure endorphin. It's 4 to the floor - but it has a soulful analogue sound. Kapote says he was listening to records from old Detroit label Red Planet and Parisian downtempo pioneers Motorbass and La Funk Mob while making this record. And yes, the vibe is there. Like these guys Kapote likes to build his musical trips around snippets from old funk vinyl. Adding beats with vintage drum machines and creating an eclectic trip into a universe full of jazzy bits, noisy drums and dirty samples.

Berlin based XXXY starts his latest label adventure with Sour Edits after a successful volume first release from himself a few months back, volume 2 is hot on its heels and will undoubtedly follow in the same direction, definitely a label to look out for this year. SOUR002 belongs to Marcin Krupa, the astronomical tapes label boss provides a perfect addition to the new sour edits line up with this smooth 3-track EP. Each track is uniquely impressive in its own way; the polish sample wizard perfectly creates three euphoric bangers, prepare to be taken on an emotional journey.

We have the pleasure of premiering the first track on the release, ‘Jazz with some house elements’. This Jazz-infused rhythmic weapon is everything we love here at bolting bits and is a stand out track in the EP. Marcin does wonders with the unique melody as it swirls around in a haze of house lushness, but another element I have to bring attention to is the brilliant percussive drums playing looping around tying the whole thing nicely together. Newly minted Groovence is no exception to this, bringing forth their their first label release with a various artists compilation that will leave your head buzzing, heart melting and feet stomping. VA releases can be hit or miss but « The Cosmic Groove EP' lives up to its name with funky, spaced out cuts that will have you calling Houston and assuring them that there is no problem.
