So this JEUCE, and what have you done?

JEUCE are a big garage punk two-piece in a small pond and their debut album introJEUCEing is out with Sheffield DIY label, Delicious Clam on 29th May 2020.

Having supported acts such as Allison Wolfe of Bratmobile and Ian Svenonius’s Escape-ism, Jenn and Bruce have been in bands in the Sheffield and Manchester scenes for too long and as the Peer Hat house band, JEUCE have seen little to no success. And we like it that way, alright?

The sound is a mix between loud female vocals and Bossa Nova drums - think Kathleen Hanna fronting the Gories - and song themes range from haemorrhoids to eating from other people's plates in restaurants.

Their new song, 'Hangover' eloquently describes the mental anguish after sinking a couple of pairs of pints. Lyrics such as 'I can't escape / This prison I have made / Talking shit / They all think I'm a prick' are sure to delight families and the elderly in equal measure.

So listen to JEUCE and be pleasantly surprised.

introJEUCEing is released digitally and on 10” vinyl, available from Bandcamp.

The vinyl is an environmentally friendly 'eco mix' used from leftover colour pellets resembling an ocean blue colour, and each record comes with an A3 poster.

Hangover - JEUCE

Described as “drone laden, bitter-sweet pop jams featuring dreamy guitar hooks and vocal harmonies to make you tearful”, Sheffield’s Crawlies are Tom, Sarah and Calum, and the self-titled Crawlies is their debut release via the city’s DIY collective and label, Delicious Clam (All Girls Arson Club/Jeuce).

Crawlies formed over a shared love of Yo La Tengo, inspired by their “ability to make 15 minute noise jams alongside classic pop gems”, exploring the importance of texture and atmosphere alongside melodies.
Their songs are about friendship, romance, and impossible situations, with other influences spanning Broadcast, Smog, Big Thief, Broken Social Scene, and Grouper.

Today, they share EP cut and live favourite, “Old News”. Tom explains: “It started off as a demo with just Sarah and a keyboard but we changed it to an organ and added a big fuzzy bassline and some drums to make it sound bolder. It’s very simple but sounds really interesting when it builds up to the louder sections and almost turns from ‘sad and a bit lonely’ into this big cathartic release. When the drums change at the end it makes me want to give someone a hug.”

Crawlies share vocal and instrument duties – drums, guitar, bass, organ, keyboard, percussion - plus Ben Hall from Mr Ben and The Bens playing cornet on ‘The Rain is
Coming’.
  
Though future shows are currently on hold, the band were due to play with Mr Ben and The Bens, Irma Vep, and Cowtown, and played their first show last year supporting K Records’ founder / Beat Happening’s Calvin Johnson who was very complimentary. Crawlies are all members of DIY collective Delicious Clam, where the EP was recorded by Calum and Ed Crisp. Band members also play in Precious Metals, Buzz Lightyear, Turtle's Breath, Avida Dollars, Thee Mightees, and previously Best Friends.
Crawlies will be released on 7th August 2020, pressed on a limited run of fifty 10-inch records.

Old News by Crawlies

Jellies is a California-Sheffield link-up between bedroom musicians Adam Van der Veer (Chillian Murphy) and Tommy Wilson. Jackie is their second offering, having self-released the debut EP Daunt in early 2019. The pair collaborate digitally, taking turns on guitar, bass and drums to lend their take on basement noise pop.

Tommy says of new single, “So”: It had to be the single and the opener because it doesn't waste any time getting to the point, and it's just fuzzy and big. I liked how there were barely any songs on [Minutemen's] 'Double Nickels on the Dime'; over like 2 minutes in length, so we sort of shot for that. I think it's probably better to say too little than too much.

It's kind of about like when you're driving along a cliff side and you're thinking 'Should I just drive off? But you don't and you should just chill and not think like that" says Adam.

The pair first came into contact when California-based Adam recorded a vocal part over one of the instrumentals that Tommy put on Bandcamp and sent it to him. Tommy loved it, and two records later they haven't looked back. They also initially bonded over HBO’s The Staircase; sharing their own true crime theories. 

They send guitar parts back and forth, with Adam on vocal duties, and both playing drums and bass guitar until the song is fully formed. Correspondence is via email and Instagram DMs, and occasionally via snail mail.

Following their acclaimed debut Gweler Ein Gofid last year, Sheffield's Sister Wives return into the light with new Crags AA single on 10" vinyl, featuring two new songs - "Crags" and "I Fyny Af / Rise".

The single's title track is a nod to local prehistoric gorge, Creswell Crags, where witches marks were discovered in 2019. The marks, also known as protective marks, were found around dark holes and crevices in the caves and are thought to have been used as part of rituals to warn off evil forces.

The notions of protection and ancient ritual tie in with the songs the band were working on at the time. They explain, "Both “I Fyny Af / Rise” and "Crags" are about summoning the consciousness of the land in times of despair; calling upon the ancient gods that live in the rocks, woods, lakes, seas and trees, and exploring spiritual suspicions and witchcraft. We wanted to explore both sides: the fear of witches, and also defend these long vilified women."
 

Analogue evocations to Cymru’s sentient landscapes, from before the fall and after The Fall. Deep time and shallow graves. A coven dances around a burning holiday home to the strains of Hawkwind, Eno and Siouxsie. Astral projecting over the Green Desert. You are as far away as you will ever be from the world's madness.

Sister Wives have previously been invited to support The International Teachers of Pop, Crack Cloud, The Eccentronic Research Council, Current Affairs, Kaputt, Flasher, Porridge Radio, as well as featuring on Warp Records’ new music picks and regular play on BBC Wales and BBC Cymru.
