"somewhere over the rainbow, there is a place we can go to do magic. it’s a land of abundance where we tranifest our dreams—yet we bring our nightmares with us. in loopy quests for healing, power, and pussy, we tromp up and down a steep mountainside bearing amulets, wands, and shields. on moonlit nights, shadows reach out from our wakes, but vanish as soon as we turn around to look. 



this mix is inspired by a night on that land, taking refuge from a storm and wayward psychic energies with three queer children in a bathhouse. we fed logs to the stove in a wood-fired sauna as outside, muffled thunder seeped from clouds sparkling with electricity. i felt myself channeling Hera, adopting Zeus’s ephebes—young, effeminate cupbearers. one carried water, the other a staff, and the third was keeper of the Pan flute, an eternally hitting vape; the gift that keeps us living. 



staying lifted, surfing currents of our whims, we fanned the flames of a bonfire outside that persisted to spite the rain, until one of the children whispered “hold me,” or rather demanded “cuddle puddle.” we traipsed up to the cabin, where with beaver-like instincts, i heaped blankets and pillows on the wood floor to make a dam that held back time. the kids nuzzled in purring satisfaction. an oil lamp on the hearth illuminated offerings of tinctures, balms, and spiked Mountain Dew. i puffed the vape while i scratched the kids’ backs, admiring the sacredness of youth. 



for those few hours we were all nineteen, re-writing our stories with chosen family and striving to not re-inscribe the wounds inflicted by our blood. we needed to not give a fuck about anything except blowing on each other’s simmering coals. both dreams and nightmares can keep one from sleep; i know this from experience. so nothing could sate me like watching chests rise and fall in slow rhythms, as each of Hera’s children faded into gentle sleep.

https://soundcloud.com/delilahtov's entry point to dance music was finding the West Coast bass scene in high school. some interesting stuff was starting to emerge from the post-dubstep soup, and it fostered an underground culture of festis and freaks whose alternative lifeways became my map out of suburbia. bass parties like Oakland’s Wormhole Wednesdays put me in my body and exploded my sense of what music could be.

then i spent six months in England, going to garage nights at a low-ceilinged club called Cellar that was literally under the High Street in Oxford. i drew closer to bass music’s roots, finding love for 2-step and old school labels like Deep Medi (who, in a full circle moment, i later saw do an all-night showcase in a redwood grove at a festival in Oregon). i learned to trace the family tree of drum patterns and rhythms—this comes from that, and in the end it pretty much all comes from Black music.

i started DJing 10 years ago, but gave it up partly because i didn’t think there was space for the music i liked in queerdom; at my first gay parties, all i heard was house and techno. there were of course the trans raves with their genre-defying splatterpaint, which can be great, but it wasn’t until i moved to New York that i got to frequent queer events where stuff like UK bass and footwork was regularly on the menu. i met queer producers making everything from garage to sounds from all over Latin America.

thus this mix was born—from the profound relief that i don’t have to choose between my loves. as Nita Aviance once put it, “it can all go together, and it all makes sense.” 

for Deep South i’ve focused on elements that defined my sonic path: thick basslines, warm textures, stuttering vocals, and bubbly British fizz. for me, making a mix is like putting together a puzzle, and when it’s done the picture is an expression of where i’m at in life. with this mix i was very intentional about building, sustaining, and ultimately resolving a narrative around some feelings i’ve had during the past couple years. i am nothing if not a storyteller, and DJing is a way of discovering the story as i go.

i’m a huge fan of the phone speaker, but this is best played on something that does at least a fair amount of bass :)

Raised in the West Coast bass scene and refined in NYC's queer underground, Delilah At Night is a storyteller-DJ based in Brooklyn. Infinitely adaptable, she drops just what each party needs, from old skool cunty house at Le Bain, to speed garage and new-age dubstep at Mood Ring, to reggaetón at the day party and hip hop + ballroom edits at the rave. She documents and expounds upon queer and trans culture through writings in Rolling Stone, RA, Slate, Pitchfork, and more. She is presently co-creating HANSeL/GReTeL (@hanselgretel.nyc), an immersive performance-party which retells the classic folktale on the dancefloor, animating the concepts it situated in our bodies so the dancing crowd can move through them.

RAVE SCOUT #082: HANSeL/GReTeL

Gather 'round, children... Hunter Petree and Delilah Friedler, the dynamic duo behind @hanselgretelnyc, bring you a unique blend of storytelling, performance, and dance music in their quarterly sharty (show/party) series. This innovative project reimagines our collective relationship with fairy tales through immersive experiences.

For our mix series, they are debuting a live set for the first time ever. This mix captures the final hour of their enchanting retelling of "Hansel and Gretel" from a woodland gathering in Tennessee. From the very first moments, you'll hear the spirited reactions of the crowd. While we all know Hansel and Gretel found a house in the woods and defeated the witch who lived there, have you ever wondered what that sounded like? How did it feel? And what came next?

HANSeL/GReTeL's performances feature a diverse range of musical styles, including dubby techno, warm breaks, vogue beats, and experimental bass. They have graced the stages of Parkside Lounge, Metropolitan, The Grassy Noll, and the Vale of Cashmere. Their next sharty—an exploration of "Cinderella"—will take place on Friday, September 6, at Rubulad in Brooklyn.

“Hansel and Gretel” and "Cinderella" are more than just fairy tales; they represent manifestations of ancestral lineages affected by cultural and literal famines, and shaped by historical shifts. In 2024, these stories still resonate within us. By coming together on the dancefloor, we confront, question, and ultimately re-write a “happily ever after” that was never truly ours.
