Join members of the Dancing Through Prison Walls community for a conversation around the experience of dancing inside prison while incarcerated; whether individually, socially, in a classroom, or as a choreographer. Joining the conversation will be three people who are now free and dancing on the outside, and, who between them, have spent 53 years imprisoned in California state prisons.

Ruth Estévez and Lumi Tan discuss performances that have shaped their vision of the medium and the impact that performance has had on their  practices.

Ruth Estévez is a curator and artistic director, joining Skowhegan in 2025 as Director of its residency program. Previously Artistic Director at Amant in Brooklyn, she has also held roles at the Rose Art Museum and REDCAT in Los Angeles. Estévez has curated major exhibitions like the 34th São Paulo Biennial and The Words of Others for The Getty’s Pacific Standard Time initiative. She founded LIGA, Space for Architecture in Mexico City, and has taught at institutions including Universidad Iberoamericana and MICA.

Lumi Tan is a curator and writer based in New York. She served as Senior Curator at The Kitchen from 2011 to 2023, where she organized exhibitions and performances with artists like Sondra Perry, Kevin Beasley, and Anicka Yi. Previously, she held curatorial roles at MoMA PS1, Luna Luna, FRAC Nord Pas de Calais, and Zach Feuer Gallery. Tan has also contributed writing to publications such as Artforum, Frieze, and Mousse. She has been a visiting critic and lecturer at institutions like Yale University, Bard College, and Columbia University.

Join LaRissa Rogers on Deli Rádio for a 45-minute conversation as she talks through her practice and the ideas driving her work. Through a selection of songs that have been important to her, LaRissa will share the experiences, reflections, and moments that have shaped her creative journey.

LaRissa Rogers’ practice combines aspects of personal memory and history to forefront the capaciousness of blackness shaped by the experience of diasporas as an Afro-Asian woman. Rogers was named to Forbes' 2024 "30 Under 30" in Art and Style. She has exhibited at Documenta 15, the Wattis Institute, and several other prominent venues, and unveiled “Going to Ground,” a public sculpture in Boston in 2024. Rogers has received fellowships from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Fine Arts Work Center, and has held residencies at the BEMIS Center, Skowhegan, and MASS MoCa. She holds an MFA from UCLA and a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University. Rogers is an Assistant Professor and Head of Sculpture at the University of Virginia, represented by Super Dakota.

Chong Gu (b.1995, Zhejiang China, they/he/she) works with migrants, readymades, regulations, and stories. His transdisciplinary process frames diasporic domesticity and internalized trauma. Tracing social, spatial and material constructs of our urbanity, Chong’s work wrestles between axioms and senses, molding rooms for incremental resistance shared amongst heterogeneous communities.

Yitian Yan is an interdisciplinary artist. Through performance and installation, she picks up the oscillations between materiality and ephemerality in the built environment - as attempts to sustain the delicate nature of sensibility in accelerating urbanization; as acts to create communal spaces for fragmented realities at the intersection of landscapes, cultures, and ideologies.
 
Priorly an Artist-in-Residence at LMCC Arts Center (24’) and AnkhLave (25’), Fall 25 will be Yan’s third season residing on Governors Island as a Fellow at AnkhLave Garden Project and at Institute for Public Architecture. Originated from Shenzhen, a coastal SEZ by the South China Sea, Yan currently lives and works in New York.

Kii Kang playing some grains with obscure electronic sounds. Kii Kang is a 2025 Fellow at the Institute for Public Architecture @the_iparch where he spent 11 weeks living and working on Governors Island.

Kii Kang is a sound artist, architect, programmer, and a “hacker” based in Brooklyn, New York and Seoul, South Korea. Through the use of tools like live coding and generative sound systems, his works deal with reassembling virtualities, creating embodied semiotics, and making meanings beyond language.

Dulcina Abreu is a Dominican independent curator and artist based in New York. Founder of DAE @calldae , an international platform for curatorial projects and strategic partnerships. She holds an MFA in Curatorial Practice from the Maryland Institute College of Art and a BFA from Parsons, The New School. Her work explores 21st-century Caribbean diaspora visual and material culture in the U.S., LGBTQI+ community-based archiving, and queer fiction.
