Episode 08: Meridian.r

This eighth foray into the otherworld is helmed by another resident of the UK’s North - Sheffield based Meridian.r. Curator of the excellent Cycle podcast - formally an event series bringing some top tier deep techno talent to an intimate warehouse in the Steel City - it is currently a series of mixes that shines a light on the northern adjacent left-field electronics scene.

No stranger to helming the decks himself, having been pushing the deep grooves at the likes of the iconic Groundwork and Magnetic North as well as his own events, we had the fine selections of Meridian.r on showcase at one of our recent monthly gatherings - wandering through a delightful garden of sounds that fit very well with our own tastes here at Portal.

Another entry into the series composed entirely on a pair of 1210s, Meridian.r’s mix weaves from the depths of ambient oceans through dub techno infused breaks and chuggers, the energy building tacitly until equilibrium is found in a heady concoction of hypnotic techno that rides the interplay between drive and groove in style. His set instantly draws you into his enchanting world, where you're suspended in a lush landscape of sound and texture. Deep, slow tribal rhythms gradually give way to more frenetic, syncopated drum patterns—yet the poetry remains throughout. Our kind of meditation.

Los Angeles native Ole Mic Odd grew up playing saxophone and immersed in jazz education before moving to the east coast and discovering turntables, synthesizers and drum machines. After four years back in LA, he moved to Chicago in 2024 where he is based.

Influenced by cult Dutch electronic labels, Detroit electro, Miami bass, Chicago house and acid, and all types of funk, his music is driven by hardware electronics, live recordings and improvisation. His high-energy hardware PA and DJ sets weave together techno, acid, electro, house, synth-wave and body music, while his recordings range from acid electro and jackin techno to crunchy house and ambient synth improvisations.

Michael has released on US and EU labels Kraftjerkz, KRI, Source Material, Zement, Dead Channel, Natural Sciences, New York Haunted, Hilltown Disco, Clan Destine, Zonate and Up North Records, among others. His latest EP "Vapor Lock" is out on Paris-based Nocta Numerica.

Human Lessons #115 - TT_

Omen Wapta’s (@omenwapta) own Harald Uunk (@haralduunk) provided a liveset of haunting echoes, distorted washes, and sparse rhythmic fluxes. A sound distinct, inimitable, and so signature of the Omen Wapta milieu. These are spectres of lost drums buoyed on machine clouds. A dense fog.
