Andrey Terekhov is known to the world as Eastcolors, and is known for his wide-scale, expansive sound on releases for labels such as Critical, Samurai and Hospital. Now, it is Demand Records who take up the talented young Russian’s work, The Swiss imprint is respected the world over for its strength of roster, quality of releases and forward-thinking vision. The perfect combination of artist and label, then, for the issue of The Light EP.

The original is straight up classic Eastcolors, with ranging depth, soulful vocals and urgent, percussive beats. The flow is augmented with some flashing electronics, smooth delivery and top drawer arrangement and production. Truly a gifted musician, if you have slept on Eastcolors up to now, it’s time to wake up.

The original is accompanied by four remixes, with Beastie Respond going all late-night on things, with some retro-sounding strings and bass added to their version. The remix still has the contemplative beauty of EC’s mix, but is taken in another direction. Imagine 80s soul and funk clashing with some sleazy house elements, and you might get close. Different, exciting, and perfectly fitting.

The Look Light remix on the other hand, is a more minimal, laid-back move. Stripping away some of the outer layers, Look Light instead focus on the groove, turning things on their heads as they cover some serious UK funky/garage ground. Phil Tangent ramps up the bass, as his remix moves from electro bursts to deep, close d&b in the blink of an eye. Troy Gunner, star of Mindset, Brownswood and The Crescent amongst others, adds elements of dub as he breaks the track down and slowly rebuilds it into a club bubbler for those that like their music serious and funky.

The remix package is perfectly balanced, and is one of the most varied you will hear all year. The release is topped off with Moonwalker, with Noel, which sees more running beats and booming bass, with an interesting undertow and touches of jazz in the corners.

Case in point Wingz - Confined got the remix treatment by no one other than InsideInfo and oh boy does he deliver! Minimal tech vibes at best. But it doesn't stop there! After their latest 140 bpm release on Artikal we had to get Mystic State to remix this track and it turns out it wasn't that bad of an idea. The Bristol duo delivers a stomping 140 remix!
