Portland Ave, thirty-third to thirty-four East,
Central Minneapolis, the tension in the street.
Two cars pull up, four agents moving tight,
Red Honda blocking traffic under flashing lights.
She waving them past like, “Yo, it’s all good,”
“Not mad at you, man,” calm misunderstood.
Phones out filming plates like it’s part of the play,
Hands on a screen, not afraid, that’s what people say.

Thirty-eight seconds, that’s all it took,
City held its breath when the trigger shook.
She tried to pull away, wheels turned downhill,
No threat in her motion, just panic and will.

“Get out the car!” voices cutting the air,
Doors getting pulled, hands reaching in there.
Passenger yelling, “Drive baby, go!”
She straightened the wheel, tried to move slow.
Gun comes up, windshield breaks the sound,
Shots through the glass as the car spins around.
Crash in the silence, streetlight bent low,
Anger in a voice: words colder than snow.


Portland Avenue, entre la 33e et la 34e Est,
Au cœur de Minneapolis, la tension dans la rue.
Deux voitures arrivent, quatre agents descendent,
Une Honda rouge bloque la circulation sous les gyrophares.
Elle leur fait signe de passer, comme pour dire : « Tout va bien »,
« J’ai rien contre vous », un calme incompris.
Des téléphones sortis, on filme les plaques comme une scène ordinaire,
Les mains sur l’écran, sans peur… c’est ce que les gens ont dit.
Trente-huit secondes, c’est tout ce qu’il a fallu,
La ville retient son souffle quand le coup part.
Elle essaie de repartir, les roues tournent en descente,
Aucune menace dans son geste, juste de la panique et l’envie de fuir.
« Sortez de la voiture ! » des voix tranchent l’air,
Les portières s’ouvrent, des mains se tendent à l’intérieur.
Le passager crie : « Conduis, vas-y ! »
Elle redresse le volant, tente d’avancer doucement.
Une arme se lève, le pare-brise éclate,
Des tirs à travers le verre, la voiture tourne sur elle-même.
Le choc dans le silence, un lampadaire plié,
Et une voix chargée de colère… des mots plus froids que la neige.
