The Answer

I was invited back to KPFK 90.7 FM to do a special set for Radiobomb’s anniversary show, celebrating eight years of bass music. I recorded a set direct from Vietnam which was then broadcast on the air live to Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, San Diego, China Lake and streamed live internationally on KPFK.org.

I performed at Coachella 2022, weekend two at the Dome. This is what I played for my first set (I had two sets).  As an open format DJ and producer, I have many different styles to utilize. This mix is familiar-forward, upbeat, crowd-moving dance music. A few trippy moments throughout, but mostly an fun bouncy ride for festival crowd.

What is Vwave?

Vietnamese New Wave is a cultural scene that developed primarily in California during the mid 80s and spread nationwide, driven by young Vietnamese Americans and the diaspora. The umbrella term “New Wave” was to given to the flourishing movement of artists, indy labels and studios who birthed a never before seen take on Viet-Am media. 

The songs themselves were diverse in genre, but favored Eurodance, Italo disco and synth pop. The bilingual covers of Western hits made the music more accessible, spreading the sound far and wide, eventually reaching the shores of Vietnam.

The extravagance of the hairstyles, the fits and the attitude gave the recently migrated Vietnamese a newly found, shared interest with their non-Viet counterparts. Music and style unified people amidst high cultural sensitivity due to the aftermath of the Vietnam War.

The sound and lifestyle lives on in various ways. Vietnamese American media has continued to blossom in new directions. Traditional New Wave lives on in the form of nostalgic events and dedicated groups online and IRL. Original creators ruminate alongside new fans, processing and celebrating an era where Vietnamese voices rang loud and clear. 

I named my project Vwave and started using that term to refer to Vietnamese New Wave. The original cassette recordings weren't always recorded properly, and the mp3 rips were often low resolution. Out of necessity, I boosted and edited the tracks for modern sound system capabilities; boosted drums, fuller tones make for a bigger sound when played in large festivals. I enhanced the original while retaining its integrity. In DJ culture we call this an “edit”. A group of edits is a pack. After more than a decade of searching and editing, rinsing on global systems, and postponed dates, the first Vwave packs are releasing.

Demonslayer is the alias of Vietnamese-American visual artist, creative director, curator, DJ, and music producer Dan Nguyen. Born and raised in Southern California and Saigon, Vietnam, the multi-disciplinary artist grew up immersing himself in the arts. With murals and exhibitions all over the world and multiple festival appearances under his belt including Coachella and Sonar, Dan continues to blaze trails globally through his work.

For his exclusive guest DJ mix for Midnight in a Perfect World, Demonslayer has titled his mix "Viet Eras Mix pt.1" and focused on unearthing rare gems spanning across multiple eras and genres — from new school Saigon cloud trap and R&B, to banned Vietnamese rock and soul from before the war, to obscure Vietnamese new wave made in 1980s California, and more. It's an eclectic, thrilling, and cohesive glimpse into new and old gems from an array of Vietnamese artists.

Each song in Vwave compilation series is a treasure hunted across the world, from Little Saigon to New York to Hanoi and more. These cuts are difficult to find. Some came from dubbed, bootleg cassettes recorded over so many times that some bits are unrecognizable, sometimes barely resembling the original. Others were pulled from scratched, burned CDRs, skipping and stuttering their way to survive through the decades, or low-quality internet rips uploaded back in the early dial-up days of 1992. 
These songs are rare relics, some are nearly impossible to find online or Shazam. Some even come from the early tapes Dan had inherited from his cousins in the mid-’90s. 

After decades of sifting through hundreds of these tracks, Dan handpicks the ones that stand out. They need to have a groove, they need to have an infectious bassline, striking Vietnamese vocals or drums that snap. They need to sound a little dark, a little melancholic, a little moody, rebellious. This is the sound he grew up with, the soundtrack of his older cousins’ lives. Not the polished New Wave your parents played on the living room TV, but the raw, street level version blasting from a boom box outside the skating rink or in the backseat of a Toyota Cressida, while skipping class or cruising around at night.

Once selected, each track goes through an intense process of reconstruction. Dan dissects the track piece by piece. He isolates frequencies, separates vocals, replaces damaged sections, and rebuilds the songs inch by inch, sound by sound. Sometimes he adds new layers of subtle drums or background instruments to give the originals more punch, but always with respect for the vintage sound. One song takes weeks, months to finalize. The goal is authenticity; keeping the dusty warmth, the unmistakable tape hiss, the imperfections that made those songs feel alive. That’s the sound he has engraved in his head as a kid; the raw, the real. 

The result is a sound remastered for today’s world; boosted and engineered to hit hard on modern club and festival systems. The originals, with their thin, tape deck dynamics, could not fare well in that arena. 
Now on Volume 3, these resurrected tracks have traveled far beyond their origins. They’ve been played on radio stations, blasted in clubs and festivals, and even featured in a Super Bowl commercial for 7-Eleve, reaching over 1.5 million viewers. Vwave has come a long way, and these compilations and mixes have been the vehicle driving that journey.
