UNDER AN EASTCOAST MOON
 
The frontier land of the south folk between Essex and Norfolk has been a pivotal region for centuries. Viking invaders, international tradesmen, warring noblemen, religious zealots, political mavericks or smuggler gangs - there have been a lot of itinerant residents who have challenged the dominant order.
 
We in the lowland fenns began to explore these itinerants and their histories. We found records and books, sang and listened to songs in the eel’s foot pub and, in the half-light, heard tales slip from the elders, casting shadows from the shadows. Sometimes just the stale air rising from the marshes would waft stories past our noses.
 
In time we chanced upon W G Seebald wandering through the territory telling that under every field and over every stile unexpected ghosts await, left where they fell. And so, in the spirit of Seebald, we wandered from Kessingland south to Orford and inland on the waterlogged estuary to Butley taking in the soggy undergrowth and muddy underbelly of the region.
 
We traced the songlines, by enquiry and osmosis, and fashioned our own perverted version of the landscape and it’s folk.
 
Twelve tales of curiosities and forgotten deeds, no longer told, but always there.
