N.E.GIRL is the guise of London-bred, Copenhagen-based DJ, producer and promoter Esther Wanyama. She might have upped sticks and moved out to Denmark but her UK roots are still ever-present in her musical output. A lover of all things bass, and driven by a passion for UK sound system and underground club culture, these influences feed heavily into Esther's DJ sets which are full of dark weighty electronics to move your body. 

Formerly working as part of Copenhagen-based music label Solumn Records, now you'll find her manoeuvring behind the scenes at Christiania venue Music Loppen, while also putting on her own parties in the city: Afro-Swing and Jasho Club. 

Back on London soil, she's a resident for collective and party series Co-select - alongside Airali, Will Hofbauer, TSUNIMAN and many more - who advocate for equality and balanced representation on DJ lineups.

She steps up for this week's 'Shine A Light On' Mix to take us on a sludgy ride through deep bass, UK techno and jungle. Let's go...

N.E. Girl's mix starts out with a beautiful atmospheric tune and then things get rowdy with amen pressure and a ting of dark steppers on the back end! This mix is runnin, she murders this one!

1. Tell us about your nirvana moment as a dj, perfect venue, set, and vibe:
Playing at Rupture London this year!

Being able to play alongside legends and artists I admire who play regularly was a huge highlight in one of my favorite venues (Corsica Studios). It also inspired me to dig a bit deeper but also challenge myself by challenging expectations of what I should play during the night - so I ended my set with Steppers and dubstep on a system that could handle the pressure weight.

2. Tell us about exciting upcoming gigs and projects.

I'm playing alongside Mala (Digital Mystiks) and Chase and Status next year in Copenhagen. Both legends in their scene. Im excited to get back into 140 and dig into Dubstep again. 

Otherwise, look out for the Strom festival 2023, I’m on the curating team, so I’m looking forward to suggesting some alternative bookings to the program.

3. Tell us about your strangest and or funniest experience as a Dj.

During a night, I had a guy come up to me with his usb asking if he could go b2b because he plays footwork too. jokes.

The Basque-born DJ and producer with roots in classical, jazz and punk music, masterfully blends genres to create captivating musical experiences. Currently based in Amsterdam, the rising Spanish star has held it down at major festivals like Sónar and Primavera Sound, while also holding a residency at Human Club Razzmatazz. Out of the booth, she curates fauna & flora, a cutting-edge multidisciplinary event merging electronic music and art installations.

“Dub infused diary of laser sounds and wiggly thoughts. Some of these tracks hold a very special meaning to me and have relentlessly accompanied me during the last months. This mix is the purest representation of my sound right now. It has a silver, grey tone to it, just like Amsterdam's sky in winter. Starting with a heartbeat and followed by a breath, it flows into atmospheric dub, house and techno territory, ending on a more abstract note, swinging between half tempo, assonant notes and arrhythmic patterns. It also features tracks by amazing Spanish late 90s artists such as Vanguard and Prozack which I recently discovered and I'm obsessed with.”

Drawing inspiration from philosopher Jacques Derrida's concept of 'l'avenir' (the future), which denotes the arrival of someone completely unexpected, Annebel has crafted a mix that embodies unpredictability. This theme serves as the foundation for her selection of music, resulting in a journey that defies expectations. The mix unfolds in a cyclical fashion, beginning at 100 bpm and culminating at either 200 bpm or perhaps circling back to 100 bpm once more— who knows?
