There is a beautiful fountain outside of the Philadelphia Art Museum. Years ago I was at the museum and was transfixed by the the exuberance and joy of a group of teenage boys frolicking in the water. For some reason, I imagined what could have happened (and probably did) at some other time (and probably did).

Near the museum of art
White noise soothes and surrounds them
Beauty that breaks your heart
These lovely works of art

Blue sky listened to the laughter
The day was white and warm
All the innocence was shattered
By blue uniforms
Ever since they were born

They felt the love of Philadelphia
And it filled them up with pain

Daniel stood in the fountain
His face was proud and hard
Uniforms started shouting
“Who the fuck you think you are?
You’re pushin’ us too far”.

Daniel said, “You are wrong, sir.
No more will I accept.
I know that I belong here”
They dragged him to the edge
The water turned to red.

He felt the love of Philadelphia
And it filled him up with rage.

Let it lift us from this page

We all live in Philadelphia
but that bell never rang true
America, America will kill you
If you don’t look like I do
We pretended we never knew 

And we all have bathed in the fountain,
Bodies naked and warm.
And when the world closed all around us
We wore blue uniforms.
