My friend Marius asked me to join his band for his mates stag party. They both play together in a marching band so we decided to make a rock version of the german folk song "Auf der Vogelwiese". When we met at my place to practice, his idea was to play the intro of the song with his flute.
There was no intention to make it a shitty-fluted-track!

Winterwonderland (Cover)

It's a very cool song with a lot of stuff happening in the original version so we thought we give it a try :)
I played around with some stereo widening modulation and I think I found a good balance between keeping the mono compatibility and having exaggerated chorus effects on the guitar (in the last part of the song there is a chorus effect on purpose).

Best Part (Cover)

This is a comparison between the direct input of my guitar (0-20s), the "Beyerdynamic M88" (20-40s), the "Shure SM7b"(40s-1:00) and the "the t.bone SC1100"(1:00-end). I placed the microphones close next to each other about 40cm pointing towards the 12. threat. The t.bone of course in cardioid mode.
I used a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 (3rd Gen.) as the audio interface with the air mode on (with air mode enabled the sound seems to be just a tiny little brighter but in this comparison negligible).
To be able to compare objectively I set the volumes to approximately the same level and added a light compression to reduce the peaks.
The guitar by the way is a Harley Benton Custom Line CLJ-412E NT.

Microphone Comparison (Beyerdynamic M88/Shure SM7b/the t.bone SC1100)

I was very curious about how the "recorderman" drum miking technique would sound and I always wanted to do a drum recording session in my room where the ceiling and floor is made of wood.
So I grabbed a few mics and a drummer and placed a drumset in front of my settee and bed:

0-0:48
should present a common method for simple drum recording: one overhead condenser (Beyerdynamic TG53i) and a dynamic kick mic (Beyerdynamic Opus 99).
0:48-1:44
is the Recorderman technique with two identical dynamic Beyerdynamic M88 (cardioid)
1:44-2:33
is Recorderman with the dynamic Shure SM7b next to the shoulder and the M88 above the snare
2:33-end
is Recorderman with the condenser mic "the t.bone SC1100" (cardioid) and the M88 above the snare.

As an interface I used a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 with air mode enabled.
I did some very light EQing (within a 2db range; low cuts) and some very light compression with the same settings for each example so that it is possible to compare objectively.

Drums Miking - Recorderman Technique Comparison

Here I created the stereo width of the guitar by panning it (duplicated) to both sides, each using a graphic equalizer with opposite setup. I find it a very effective and natural sounding way with minimal side effects.
There is some spill of the guitar which I couldn't resolve so next time I will have to pay more attention to the mic positioning.

Wade In The Water (Cover)

I borrowed this gorgeous guitar amp Mesa Boogie Transatlantic from my very good friend and just couldn't resist to place the Shure SM7b infront of it. He told me he loved the (analog) spring reverb so I recorded wet and dry and made one track with a stock reverb plugin from Logic (ChromaVerb, Guitar Chamber preset, a little modified).
I find it difficult to say which one sounds "better" because the plugin acts as a stereo effect and I believe that you can also get the same reverb sound out of the plugin if you try setting it up exactly. Anyway it depends on the goal which kind of reverb to choose.

It's a must-play song when you own a 12-string guitar.

Wanted Dead Or Alive (Cover)

I really dig the version with Joe Bonamassa playing guitar.
Tabeas wonderful voice made me have goose bumps even while editing the track and her sister Alisa plays the keys on time like a metronome. If there is anything wonky then its me playing the guitar!
Some mixing details: Our cover starts with an e-piano and ends up with a normal piano sound and I added some strings at the climax of the song.

Very nice gospel style song with Alisa singing very powerful vocals, Tabea on keys and myself playing the guitar.
I like the funky clavinet in combination with the uncompressed blues guitar sound. What do you think?

I love doing recording, mixing and producing, especially with my friends.
The music I share on SC doesn't belong to a specific genre simply because for me it's much more important to make music and be creative with people who are motived (then I get motivated :) ).
