MOON ZERO is the enigmatic and ethereal project of London-based Tim Garratt. Composed and recorded entirely in churches, Moon Zero's compositions explore the harmonic chaos of competing frequencies. Denovali Records is pleased to announce the release of Moon Zero's second EP 'LOSS' on vinyl and 2xCD, where the second CD will contain the first EP 'TOMBS' and remixes thereof, previously available only as a limited cassette release. This edition of 'Tombs' will also appear as a separate vinyl release.

'TOMBS' is, especially for a debut, a bold and confident musical statement, which reimagines the possibilities of processed organ and laptop sounds in a live context. The opener 'Dalyan' builds from slowly wavering layers of sound into a crumbling, decaying wall of fuzzed-out, peaking noise, which in turn builds again into ever-moving blocks of chopped loops and feedback, absorbing the listener completely into Moon Zero's musical space. A remarkable listen.

'LOSS' is the result of a year spent working out how to play Moon Zero live and then going on to play concerts. Using a wide range of instrumentation such ad drawbar organ, bass synth, vocals, fx processors and guitar pedals, Loss was written & recorded over 2 days at St George in The East Church in London, October 2013. 

Whereas 'Tombs' was more concerned with exploring melody in an ambient space, 'Loss' is looking at pulse and movement in sound. Indeed, Garratt states: "I wanted to create a soundscape that had a propulsion to it, a sense of rhythm but without drums. I like sounds which are dynamic in terms of both volume and frequency range, they need to have a life to them and breathe."

Composing and recording in churches, the musical works of Moon Zero embody their character; the authentic space and depth to the sound. Some frequencies cause parts of the church to vibrate wildly. One can hear children playing outside and wind blowing through the gaps of the windows. It has life.

Garratt adds: "There is a sad solitude of being alone in a large room, and as an atheist I find no comfort in the doctrine that surrounds me." Moon Zero's compositions leave with that isolation on them, the setting is directly influencing the music. Indeed, Loss is inspired by dimming nostalgia and inevitability. Exploring ideas about the end and decay of life cycles, these four tracks constitute a staggering masterpiece.

Moon Zero - Endless Palms

Sometime in 2016, I came upon the California-based electronic musician, releasing his organic, evolving and highly textural synthesized compositions as r beny. I followed and watched many of his YouTube videos, where he showcased his modular skiff and various digital synthesizers (I particularly enjoyed watching the Novation Peak ambient showcase, which inspired me to purchase that synth). Throughout the years, I've been enchanted (as I'm sure some of you also have) with his particular aesthetic in creating warm, lush, and melancholic pads that stretch out their fingers and brush the worry away. When, in 2018, he got noticed by Dauw imprint, I reached out to premiere a track from his Saudade album. Since then, Austin Cairns' creations have continued to sell out - you can still buy digital copies of eistla (2018), echo's verse (2019), and natural fiction (2020) via his Bandcamp. By now, he has established a solid following, so it isn't easy to be useful with my words on HC. I can also say the same about the UK-based quiet details imprint, which has amassed a gathering of my all-time favourite ambient artists and relentlessly releases an amazing album every single month. This is almost a community now of all like-minded musicians sharing the label's aesthetic in creating pieces as an interpretation of the platform's name. I cannot keep up and cover every single album on there, so you might as well follow along on your own, and I promise that you won't be disappointed [for example, I failed to give my buddy James Murray proper coverage of his latest album, Weeds, thinking that, yeah, okay, you must already know that it's amazing]. Today, I'm dipping my toe back into the myriad of sonic seas and atmospheres with a track premiere from Cairns' upcoming album, discerned in the fugue of streams, because I think that it is very special.

For almost two decades, I have been tirelessly seeking honesty in music. I aim to find the sounds with which the artist speaks. Soundscapes that make you feel. Atmospheres that not only fill your room (and headphones) but truly transport you into another time and place. I will never forget the first time I heard Abul Mogard’s music. I was mesmerised. His intricate attention to sound design, rich textures, and manipulation of the created environment instantly transformed me into an avid fan. His music didn’t just augment my mood; it seemed to seep into my being, altering the code behind the perception of my mind. I didn’t just listen to his music, I invited it to be a part of my condition. In an effort to delve deeper and spend more time with such music, and more importantly, the composers themselves,  I created Headphone Community, where I feature an artist for an in-depth exploration. In the last three months, I’ve highlighted the sounds of James Murray, Ben Chatwin, and Erik K Skodvin.
